This is a common thread with all the greatest bands, and extends at the album level, as well. My favorite (add band name here, Rush in this case) song/album is the one I'm listening to right now.
I've been listening to music since I can remember (1968 when I was 5) and my parents never stopped us from listening to any music... That being said I personally have favorites from the bands at the top of my list though I enjoy all those bands(Chicago Steely Dan Rush Toto) music.. for Rush it's Subdivisions and Ghost of a Chance..😎
My RUSH adventure began in 1974 when I was 16 and I saw them in concert 4 times and the rest is history..It's amazing that 3 men and make this beautiful music.
I think most of the song’s meaning is captured in the 2nd to last stanza (“The most endangered species: the honest man…”). It caps off each verse, one describing science, one describing art, one describing nature, and another describing technology. Then, it suggests that these things are ALL important…and that we can get where we’d like to be if in each we simply acted with integrity. Then, in the last verse, Neil reminds us that…despite our efforts, most of it gets washed away (by the “tide”). Hopefully what stays behind is a product of our collective integrity.
Thank you for not interrupting the song this time. I'm glad you've become a fan. Each man is the best in the world at their craft. Permanent Waves is one of their perfect albums. I enjoy watching you grow in your appreciation of the best band in the world.
Its complex stuff for smart people. Thats what they were all about. Quality, intelligence, maximum effort, sharing of knowledge, teaching, learning. They were very rare and special. There was never any band like them and may never be. They changed so much over 40 years and 20 albums. They basically were like 4 or 5 different bands over their career. So much variety. They even had rap in one of their songs called roll the bones.
Btw, love your critiques!!! You are one very astute and smart lady!!!! As a fan of Rush for over 40 years.....l'm learning new things about their songs from your reviews. Awesome work!!!! Thank you so much!!!
I've been a Rush superfan for 35 years and this is my favorite song of theirs. I always come back to it. So poetic, the beat is amazing, the multiple solos... Muah... A masterpiece.

Great reaction Rosalie As a long time Rush fan I can say that my favorite song changes over time. The great thing about this music is that it is so dense and there is so much in the catalogue you constantly discover new favorites. Returning to songs and discovering more in them is common
It's a joyous oddity of a track, it takes a bit to get your head around, but once you do, it becomes more than a song. It is a transcendent artistic experience, from artists at the very peak of their game.
It is a real treat to see someone experiencing Rush is in real time. This band has been a part of the soundtrack of my life since 1981. And I am a better person because of them.

Hi Rosalie, the original Album art has a Lady with her dress being blown out ala Marylin Monroe style with a visual Easter egg in the background. Permanent Waves was in my Sony Walkman for a year in 1980, I never got bored with it. It remains one of my favorite albums of theirs. I feel the entire album is one of their "Tightest" as musicians. Natural Science is a great look into their philosophy of not caring about the record label or trends, what is popular etc. It is a wacky multi segmented track that goes all over the place, it requires %100 attention at all times, there is no escape from it's clutches of attack as music and story both weave and meander to places that would best describe "Prog" but it does so very intentionally with precision and finesse. They are total masters, but very accessible to people- always talking too, not talking down- one is in the dialog with them, not third person, you are experiencing the conversation every time like hearing for the first time. I love them so much, they have been around in my life since 1976. I can't get away. nor would I ever want too

I was lucky enough to see them live 13 times but for all the concerts I did not attend, I blame myself now. I’m always amazed to see a newbie reaction listening to my all time favorite band. I miss them a lot. I’m not a young man anymore. Time flies by like crazy but I know my feelings are about the same of all my fellow Rush fans around the globe. We’re getting old but that music is in our blood.
Calm down. Her first time listen. Sheeesh. We as rush fans have probably heard these songs, thousands of times, I don't think her interrupting to give a "reaction/comment" at that moment is going to hurt what you & we already know.
the music is the first gift I get from rush music then I get to understand the lyrics and their meaning and realise their lyrics are a gift for humanity great job analysing this one... keep exploring.. they will touch you deeper than tears that fall from eyes that only cry yes even deeper than tears that fall from eyes that know why?
I was lucky enough to see Rush back in 1980 81 and many more they were amazing and better live. I believe they were the best live band I've ever seen in my life !!!! I also love your reaction to Rush ty for bringing back my teenage life !!
I've been listening to it since it was released in 1980 and I have never tired of it. I still get amped up. And this is true with all of the Rush catalog. There are advantages to being a cult band as opposed to a radio band. Overexposure is hard to attain.
I just ❤ your reviews. Your comments and analysis are as rich as the pieces you review. You come out as so sincere and thuthful, very much appreciated.
As a going on 50-year admirer of this unparalleled trio, I concur...if not their best, top 3 certainly. The look on your face says everything Rosalee...kinda hard to comprehend just how amazingly talented these three gentlemen are. All the best.
I’m in! I just watched your perspective on the entire RUSH album Moving Pictures and I’m mind blown by your approach to this. You have a truth to you, and an understanding that can’t be faked. You’re the real deal Rosalie, and I’m so excited to see what you have to say, but even more so, your not exaggerated yet so impressionable facial expressions. Thank goodness I found someone believable when it comes to complex rhythms.
I was fortunate to see Rush live 3 times. My second show, they played Natural Science and it was otherwordly! I almost feel survivor's guilt to know that you and many others will never see this perfect 3 piece again. Thank you for this honest reaction.
Thank you for this! I absolutely love your openness to experiencing Rush and the resulting appreciation of their music-coming to them without the preconceived notions that so many bring to their work, I feel like this enhanced your recognition of their overall aesthetic presentation. One of the things I’ve always loved about “Natural Science” is how, as a longer form piece, it represents a kind of continuity-but in an “updated” form (so to speak)-of their previous suite-length pieces, from “2112”, to “Xanadu”, “Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage” and finally to “Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” (from ’78’s Hemispheres album, immediately prior to Permanent Waves, ’80). I read/hear “Natural Science” as a concise expression of Rush’s ethos up to this point; they have always “stuck to their guns”, maintaining their own artistic integrity. Validated by the “breakthrough” 2112 record, which allowed them the luxury of fully exploring/indulging in long-form, progressive rock pieces. Ever allergic to being typecast/pigeonholed, by the time of Permanent Waves, they were reevaluating (straining against?) what I call “the robes, the incense, the caves of ice!” phase, and recalibrated their compositional approach away from epic length/thematic treatments (in a shift they would maintain for the rest of their career). As an aside, “Natural Science” has a sort of counterpart (no pun) in a tune of similar length “The Camera Eye”, from their follow on to Permanent Waves”, ’81’s Moving Pictures. Anyway, a long way of saying(!) Permanent Waves occupies a unique place in their oeuvre, crackling with that unique energy of a group compelled to continuously evolve.
Hi Rosalie, I'm glad that you have taken Rush on board whole heartedly. Bringing them into your whole music experience is a massive plus when considering how any band approaches and puts songs together. Appreciate your understanding of the gift we all have to be changed by the Power of music. Thankyou. P. S. The Live version of Spirit of Radio in Toronto for the benefit concert is something you might like to check out.
Watching your expressions as you listen is classic! I think many of us who love the band RUSH can remember where we were the very first time we heard one of their songs. Of course, it is virtually impossible to state which song one considers to be their greatest. Their own evolution as a band marks our personal growth and listening journey. Some of us listened from their beginning; other's perhaps more recent. With every new album--whether we knew exactly what they were doing/saying--the exciting aspect of growing older along with the band was Neil's invitation into classical literature, mythology, social issues, and technological advancements facing humanity. Neil's Socratic method meant his lyrical and musical genius gave space and place for Geddy and Alex to serenade--and educate--the listener. Along with Malcolm Muggeridge, the band knew the greatest challenge of the 20th century was thinking in categories--instead of thinking. By their music, we are enriched all the more. Bless Neil's memory.
"The story behind the (original) album cover photo of Permanent Waves. The background scene comes from a photo, taken by Flip Schulke, of the Galveston Seawall in Galveston, Texas during Hurricane Carla on September 11, 1961. The woman in the foreground is Canadian model Paula Turnbull, also featured on Exit...Stage Left".
You can see interviews with Alex where when asked about solos he always speaks about feelings, the way the sound or texture made him feel. Why he thought it went with the song. Nothing about the scale worked with chords. So very nice that you notice how much his solos reflect that.
The "Wheels within wheels" part always reminds me of a skit from the Muppet Show where the character is frantically singing The Windmills Of Your Mind. It shouldn't but it immediately makes me think of it. And I love Natural Science.
Wow. I have listened to this song from day one of it's release many years ago. Being a musician myself, I have studied it and performed it many times. I am truly impressed with your analysis of this effort. It is so gratifying to see someone grasp this song the way you have and interpret it in such a vibrant fashion. BRAVO! I can't wait to see your RUSH t shirt. I've had so many over the years, I wish they all still fit LOL. I look forward to your RUSH journey and to see your facial reactions especially. My jaw dropped every time I first heard one of their songs. Thank you for sharing your RUSH experience.
Love this! Also love you getting to the deep cuts! Rush is my top band and my favorite songs from them are usually the most obscure ones on the album. I still listen to their music by album because it’s always a journey of discovery! Keep up the amazing work!!!
The ever changing expression on your face says it all. I see the deep joy and happiness on your face that breaks out in a huge smile that says exactly what you feel in your heart and soul. The smile of pure contentment. Thank you for being who your are and sharing your joy with us. I just cannot get enough of your "happy smile". Your face just glows and in turn makes me happy, too.
I can't remember for sure (this was back in 1980), but I think this was the very first Rush album I listened to, sitting in a dorm room of a college friend, and his roommate was playing a Rush LP on his stereo. I was so fascinated by the music I played through the whole album three times. Rush had hooked me immediately with their fantastic music. I had become a Rush fan that night.
I think he is talking about how we get so caught up in our own complex problems that we lose sight of the broader simpler compassion and empathy for each other on a broader scale.
cant wait to see your Rush t-shirt so happy your now at the rush table enjoy the feast your a special lady a genuine good human being and wise interpreter well wishes to u and yours
You Miss, are awesome. Natural science is a bridge between their 20-minute songs into the shorter hits. Alex said this is one of his hardest songs to record. But they had so much fun making this album. The story behind the song it's so fun. They actually went outside and splashed in the water, and put Neil's drum set on a raft in a little lake behind the studio. I wish you and Neil could have talked. Thank you for doing this song.
Hi Rosalie! I loved your review of this song which is one of my favourites too. The 'Copenhagen Interpretation' of quantum physics states that sub-atomic particles have no definite position in time or space 'until they are observed'. In other words it is the very act of looking (or observing) that brings reality into being.
@@carlostejada1479 Umm, yeah and where did I say it wasn't? Folks should absorb what they read before they respond while completely misinterpresting things.
@@manuelper it sounds like you put Drean T. at the same level of Natural Science... like if D. T. started at Natural Science level and then grew up... "starting point" D. T. didn't start at N. S. level... they started 1000 steps below and never reached Natural Science.
@@carlostejada1479 The modern metal prog sound that DT has and spawned many other bands starts with Natural Science. That doesn't mean it's better. There's a distinction there.
This is why Geddy calls Neil " The Professor" not for his drumming but for his poetry, his philosophy and occasional prophecy. His writing and literary leanings set him apart from the usual musician.
I love everything about this piece of music, especially the vision and poetry of Neil's words. They carry such a positive view of life and growth, both as individual beings and as a culture (or cultures). I'm a big fan of most everything Rush has written but this one is way up there.
I've been a Rush fan for over 40 years, I left school the year permanent waves came out, im very lucky to have seen them many times. I got to say this is my favourite Rush song and easily in my top 5 all time. Thank you for a great reaction 🤘❤
huge fan of all music, in the next level to my existence I would like to hear the permanent waves album on repeat. True magic and music to my ears. Natural Science is one of my all time favs.
I've been going to Rush concerts since Grace UP. Only missed a few tours and always wanted to see them play Natural Science. I forget what year it was, but I go alone to the box office when it opened and bought a ticket. I got two stuck together, and without thinking, I said "Ma'am, you gave me two. I only paid for one." while pushing the extra ticket under the glass. She said "Oh, thank you very much!" I said "Have a great day." She said "You enjoy the show and have a great time." During the concert, they played Natural Science for the first time in decades. When they got to the line about "The most endangered species..." I remembered what happened at the box office. I started laughing and knew I will survive annihilation. There has been other crazy synchronicities at other Rush shows in or near Philadelphia. Several strange serendipitous events so implausible, you wouldn't believe me if I told you. Little miracles at four Rush shows. So amazing.
Fun fact : This is the 40th anniversary reissue album cover. The original is similar but has Canadian model Paula Turnbull and blowing by is a newspaper. In Canada the headline reads "Dewey Defeats Truman", one of the great newspaper gaffs of all time. In America they had to edit out the headline because the Chicago Tribune is STILL embarrassed by the mistake of calling the Presidential election too soon!
Lovely to now see you get Rush, yes the music is great but its so much more than that. It becomes a lifestyle and many Rush fans will say that they are the soundtrack to their life. Many on here got to experience it as the music was released and they never failed to disappoint on each album release. Always growing as a band and experimenting - they played music they wanted to hear and we went along and enjoyed the journey. Great reaction and welcome to the Rush family 😃
The music, with its triumphant crescendo, completes the text giving this continuous sensation of evolving, changing at every chord progression, always adding something new, giving a sense of growth as in a Fibonacci sequence: wheel within wheels, time after time, a quantum leap forward, wave after wave, tide after tide. The use of all these epanadiplosis amplifies the lyrics emotionally... and the song ends with the sound of the sea as it began (will flow and recede leaving life to go on as it was). "Art as expression - Not as market campaigns" takes up the Spirit of Radio (the beginning and end of the album merged togheter). Greetings from Italy
Rush has such a deep catalog that 20 different fans of theirs could pick 20 different songs as their favorite!....and then their favorite keeps changing on top of that all!!!!
I remember when I got this album. I remember how much joy it brought to me in a time when my life was just a mess. It was also the same year I turned all that around and found a better path. Funny how music can mark the times of your life.
I bought my first CD player, a cheap one disc unit I can’t even remember what the name was at a warehouse store called Combes in Minnesota in 1988 or so. Across the street was a Best Buy. Permanent Waves was the very first CD I ever bought. I had the vinyl, but wanted to jump in on the new tech. I still have it and it still works perfectly.
"All the busy little creatures Chasing out their destinies Living in their pools They soon forget about the sea…' one of my favorite lines. Great song to see live. First band to see in concert.
in my opinion it is their most well rounded musical arrangement...some prog, rock, guitar, time changes and it takes you on a journey that few songs do...next look at Before And After...it also is well worth your time...
Can't wait to see your T-shirt. I have a ton of Rush T-shirts. Bought many of them at the 30 live shows I have attended. Enjoy your journey. I wish i could experience hearing all these great songs again for the first time. I remember mowing yards for money to be able to afford the next Rush record I had my eye on. I am a drummer today because of Neil Peart's inspiration when i was first becoming a fan.
I love your very intelligent analysis of this great song (both the music and Neal Peart's brilliant lyrics). It's like an art masterpiece in the form of sound, but also paints images in peoples' minds from the story it tells. You describe everything about this song so wonderfully. Thanks, Rosalie! :)
It is fascinating how the lyrics AND the music move the listener from themes - of the individual to the collective, from the temporal to the timeless, and from chaos to order/progress and back again, and it is all exemplified by this song. It is a truly majestic composition if ever there was one. And isn't it great how Rush can weave an extended metaphor through poetry & music?
The "Live in Rio" version is one of the first times you really get to see (thanks to the camera angles) all of the different aspects of this song as they played it. Great reaction. keep 'em coming.
I love your analysis of the song and that you do a deep dive on a song like Natural Science. Rush was a great band and their lyrical content always head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion. The great music and substantive lyrics just nail it. Rush was a band like no other and I count myself fortunate to have been alive while they were around. I've attended many of their concerts since 1978 I wish everyone might have seen them. To me they made the world just a little bit brighter I miss them an awful lot. Thanks for the music fellas.
You are fantastic. You’re very gifted with your observations. I was fortunate to meet Alex and Geddy and stand on their stage at Radio City as they played in front of me. I used to play this song on the piano. Talk about intense! One of my favourites too. It’s so philosophical. It pulls you out of your pool, your wheel within wheels… until you again forget about the sea…
I love seeing people discover RUSH, who appreciate it and seem to get it! Permanent Waves is the first Rush album I experienced. This band, and Peart's lyrics in particular helped shape who I am today. My humble suggestion to check out from them is Xanadu, if you haven't heard it.
What makes Rush so amazing is well like you say, you can hear a few notes, and you know this is Rush, they were willing to be influenced by the most current music at the time, and move their style along with it. Later albums, they incorporate, synthesizers, electronic drums,(poor) rap bars, reggae, etc. They allowed their productions to get softer and lighter, cleaner, thicker, and heavier, whatever was needed for that album. But through it all, you could always hear that they were Rush. As you get a little further into your Rush journey, you can then begin to watch any of the many live versions of these songs. Your mind will be utterly blown that three guys can re-create these songs live, not using backing tracks.
You need to understand that " Your favorite RUSH song " is going to change every time you listen to them !!! The tours.
It’ll never happen again 🦉
I was lucky enough to see them live 13 times but for all the concerts I did not attend, I blame myself now. I’m always amazed to see a newbie reaction listening to my all time favorite band. I miss them a lot. I’m not a young man anymore. Time flies by like crazy but I know my feelings are about the same of all my fellow Rush fans around the globe. We’re getting old but that music is in our blood.
SO AWESOME THAT YOU DIDN'T INTERRUPT ...A rare treat...:)
Agreed! She listened 🫶
I couldn’t agree more
Calm down. Her first time listen. Sheeesh. We as rush fans have probably heard these songs, thousands of times, I don't think her interrupting to give a "reaction/comment" at that moment is going to hurt what you & we already know.
I came here to hear her reaction. If I want to hear the song uninterrupted, I can go to lots of other sources.
She gave me a shout out
the music is the first gift I get from rush music then I get to understand the lyrics and their meaning and realise their lyrics are a gift for humanity great job analysing this one... keep exploring.. they will touch you deeper than tears that fall from eyes that only cry yes even deeper than tears that fall from eyes that know why?
Thanks!
Thank you very much
I was lucky enough to see Rush back in 1980 81 and many more they were amazing and better live. I believe they were the best live band I've ever seen in my life !!!! I also love your reaction to Rush ty for bringing back my teenage life !!
you'll will play this song a thousand times over the 30 years and I can guarantee it won't get old.....this song and album will never disappoint
Neil was a genius, God rest his soul!
It gets overlooked a lot, but it's certainly up there in my personal Rush rankings.
You Lady have just become my favorite TH-cam reactor. The messages that Neil Peart wrote always had a meaning. We are still finding them. Merry Xmas!
One of my favorite songs by Rush.
Saw them in Philly for this Permanent Waves tour.
This song is everything I love about Rush.
Like many Rush songs you never get tired listening to them as it's so complex both musically and lyrically it is timeless like classical music
Thank you so much Neil. RIP
I believe that "Wheels within wheels in a spriral array, a pattern so grand and complex" refers to complex DNA structure.
There are a lot of repeating spiral structures in nature, from seashells to galaxies. I believe Neil is referring to these as well.
I think it was about that old kid's game called Spirograph. 😂
The microcosm/macrocosm idea in song.
I think he is talking about how we get so caught up in our own complex problems that we lose sight of the broader simpler compassion and empathy for each other on a broader scale.
I can see this.
cant wait to see your Rush t-shirt so happy your now at the rush table enjoy the feast your a special lady a genuine good human being and wise interpreter well wishes to u and yours
Natural Science is basically the starting point for bands like Dream Theater.
with all respect, Natural Science is 1000 steps ahead from Dream Theatre
@@carlostejada1479 Umm, yeah and where did I say it wasn't? Folks should absorb what they read before they respond while completely misinterpresting things.
@@manuelper it sounds like you put Drean T. at the same level of Natural Science...
like if D. T. started at Natural Science level and then grew up...
"starting point"
D. T. didn't start at N. S. level... they started 1000 steps below and never reached Natural Science.
Actually he's called the professor as a reference to the professor on Giligan's island... because he's the 'Smart one'.
Yup, that and in the early 80's he had an uncanny resemblance to Russell Johnson, the actor that portrayed "The Professor." 😊
Exactly!
Exactly!
Watching this performed live is quite something. Flawless timing changes.
She said "Oh, thank you very much!" I said "Have a great day." She said "You enjoy the show and have a great time."
During the concert, they played Natural Science for the first time in decades.
So amazing.
Your facial expressions are a picture... especially when you smile at Neil's drum fills!
Well said my friend!
Natural Science is perfect in so many ways. It's the gift that keeps on giving. So much happens in it, without going too far in 1 way or another.
Rush has such a deep catalog that 20 different fans of theirs could pick 20 different songs as their favorite!....and then their favorite keeps changing on top of that all!!!!
YES THAT WAS A FANTASTIC DISCRIPTION OF WHAT RUSH IS ALL ABOUT THATS BECAUSE, WHAT DOES 3 GOATS = RUSH
I remember when I got this album. I remember how much joy it brought to me in a time when my life was just a mess. It was also the same year I turned all that around and found a better path. Funny how music can mark the times of your life.
Their last album is my favorite, how many bands can say that AFTER 40 YEARS!!!
I have no favorites but Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece.
Such an underrated, lesser-known, and profound song. Appreciate you highlighting it.
"All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea…' one of my favorite lines. Great song to see live. First band to see in concert.
There is a live version from 1997 that is worth a watch. To see these guys play this complex music is pure magic.
in my opinion it is their most well rounded musical arrangement...some prog, rock, guitar, time changes and it takes you on a journey that few songs do...next look at Before And After...it also is well worth your time...
I absolutely love watching you have the same reaction I did back in 1980
I even used this metaphor in my novel, it was so brilliantly conceived.
We are privileged to have lived in the time of the great poet [and drummer extraordinaire] Neil Peart. Rest in Greatness
I am a drummer today because of Neil Peart's inspiration when i was first becoming a fan.
that is awesome!
I had that same look on my face at 16 yrs old when I put side 2 on for the first time. It's beautiful to watch you reaction, takes me way back.
I love your very intelligent analysis of this great song (both the music and Neal Peart's brilliant lyrics). It's like an art masterpiece in the form of sound, but also paints images in peoples' minds from the story it tells. You describe everything about this song so wonderfully. Thanks, Rosalie! :)
Absolutely love your reactions, from the spontaneous reactions to your lyrical breakdowns…
Thanku for sharing your rush journey! 🤘
I love how much you love this band. Absolutely fantastic reaction, can’t wait for more! 👍🤘
Gives me chills every time I hear this song.
I first heard this song when I was 15 years old. I'm now nearly 60 and it still moves me the way it did all those years ago
Yep. Can't explain it. All you can do is enjoy.
This was the album that was my introduction to the band in 1980 when I was 12 years old. I have been obsessed ever since.
Just three humble Canadians practicing their craft.
I love seeing people discover RUSH, who appreciate it and seem to get it! Permanent Waves is the first Rush album I experienced. This band, and Peart's lyrics in particular helped shape who I am today. My humble suggestion to check out from them is Xanadu, if you haven't heard it.
I think Rick Beato thought Rush's greatest song was Xanadu. If you haven't heard it yet, you should check it out. It's pretty amazing.
Neil was such am amazing drummer, some people don't realize the lyrics he wrote are just as awesome! Professor of words!
It’s great watching you react to new music that you’ve never heard before, especially from one of my favorite bands.
