Are the discs hard to get out?
Are your discs scratched up trying to get them in, and out?
I would love a comparative analysis between the Avatar 4Ks released earlier this year and the two just released today.
This is way overpriced. It’s only worth about $70 at the most. But if it drops down to $100 and I’ll buy it.
Considering this was released in 1997, the CGI in Titanic is outstanding.
The only part that really looks shitty is when Jack and Rose are running away from a wave of water behind them and camera shows how cgi was plastered over their faces because they were stunt actors, that looks bad. I was hoping maybe they would try to blend that better with the 4K, I’ll find out when I watch it tomorrow for the first time

@@giuliasole9878 I didn’t actually until I watched a TH-cam video pointing it out. It appears they did not change that at all. Honestly I’m not really impressed with the 4K version. It looks mostly the same as the blu ray. I will probably keep it anyway for the Dolby atmos track alone.
Super stoked about this release, not the biggest titanic fan but this movie is undeniably iconic and was in need of a 4k release.
Standard 4K release for me. I like big fancy sets like this and I like that the box itself looks high quality, but I hate the storage of the discs and I wish there was more content in the book itself - like essays and interviews.
I remember buying Titanic on VHS in March of 98 and would watch it every day after school. Now here we are 25 years later and it's on 4k UHD now and I don't even have a 4k tv or 4k player.

You are wrong about the film stock. More than half the grain was removed from the film.
In Canada the Collector's Edition is $182.99 -- I picked up the standalone 4K at Wally for $29.96....Hard Pass for this set. Great review as always mate!
I bought and still have a VHS box set from the late 90s which has nice big photo cards, a film reel, a program and the script for the movie.
Maybe I’ll just get that then. Sounds like it has half the stuff you get in this $135 set
Skipping this one already have Titanic on 3D blu ray, but cant wait for Abyss and True Lies auto purchase no matter the price.
Watching the Titanic 4K as I'm watching this and it looks spectacular. I'm praying that Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies to look just as good.

Totally agree with you on this review. All the comparison scenes between the bluray and the 4K have shown a really nice upgrade. Still hate the discs slid into the cardboard. And our price points exactly align. I have my Amazon price watch set at $75.
This makes me even more exited for The Abyss, True Lies and Aliens!
Once again I have to point out that James Cameron is fixing T2.

I always laugh when he dies for some reason. The way it’s shot, it’s like it’s meant to come off as comedic.
I gathered that he was French and Jack met him during his Paris endeavors but it’s never explained for sure.

Even though the packaging for the collectors edition isn’t actually that impressive, my wife loves this movie and all things Titanic, so I sprung for this as a Christmas gift for her.
It comes in such a beautiful packaging, too. I think she's going to love it

i love watching my favorite all time movies in the best possible way i can. so excited to pick up my copy.
Here’s a crash course in film stocks. Film stocks are broken down by speed. Speed meaning how fast film can pick up light. Faster films like 800 ISO can pick up light faster and is good for low light shooting. However, the silver halide crystals are larger. Silver halide crystals are what create the grain as we know it. Slower film stocks are usually used for daylight, shooting or studio shooting. Those can be as slow as 50 ISO. The stocks are a lot sharper and the grain is a lot smaller. Therefore you usually don’t notice it as much. Most films during most times were shot using film speeds of 325 to 500 ISO. That’s why you usually see a light grain over everything. It was the best all-around stock for shooting most films. It’s not normal for a film to mix stocks. Just for ease of use so they go with a slightly higher ISO to shoot the entire film on. However, slower stocks were normally used for visual effect shots, so there was less grain to contend with, and the image was sharper. On top of that lenses have speeds too. Wider lenses are faster. Like a 25 or 35 mm. The speed for lens is denoted by the F stop. Which is how wide the aperture opens. Some lenses open as wide as 1.2 and Kubrick actually used a lens that opened as wide as .8 to shoot Barry Lyndon on so he could have natural candlelight illuminate the scene. The wider, the F stop the more of the film grain is visible. Which is why night or darker footage tends to look grainier. there are multiple things that are contributing to the grain in a film. A film like Titanic was shot almost entirely on a set which is probably heavily illuminated so they used slower stocks. This is just an educated guess though. When I hear people talk about grain and all these 4K videos, I feel like they have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. this is what grain is. The silver halide crystals are what is reactive to light and burns the image into the film. Once those are washed off, they leave a grain behind. Grain is affected by the speed of the film and how it was exposed to the light.
7:10 This is the reason why I haven't order collectors edition.
Now we need a 4K of the Night to remember.

$135.00 is that not just the Laserdisc adjusted for inflation? Seems silly that studios want to charge so much. I'm with you Jeff, I looked at the set and expected $69.99 as the price for 25 year old film that we've all seen and owned multiple copies of.
I have had VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-Ray and 3d! No way I'm going again at over hundred bucks

I just watched this with my Sony laser projector. Simply stunning. It looked (and sounded) nearly perfect to me. I forgot how good this film is.
That's awesome that Cameron's movies are getting good 4k transfers. More are on the way! I just got back from the theater for that one night re-release of The Abyss and I thought it looked pretty good in 4k. Here's hoping Terminator 2 will get a good transfer in the future.
Totally agree with you. They could’ve done so much! How could this cost around $130? Not worth it.
$135 and they still make you slide the discs out of cardboard
I cry every time I have to slide a pristine 4k disc out of cardboard and put my greasy fingerprints all over it in an effort to free the disc from its prison.

Just got home to find mine in the mail. I had to splurge and am very happy with it. I already knew of the quality of the transfer so why not. Remember the film was cleaned up for the 3D version which blew my mind in the theater.
Shame they FORGOT to add the Digital Copy code to all Collectors editions!!!!!

This is by far the best 4K release in 2023. Phenomenal job! There is something cool about old CGI mixed with practical effects. It has that organic feel. Not artificial like modern plastic looking movies.
Watched part of it today. Stellar transfer on my 83” OLED. Can’t imagine it looking better.

Ugh, the horror of having to fiddle with the discs' edge to poke them up, then slide them out. Disc is what matters more, so design folks need to ensure discs remain safe. Dang it.

The 4K version looks stunning, but they did edit the movie, it's not the theatrical version. The drawing scene had a shot edited out of Kate Winslet...
I watched the 4k version also, but I don’t think the film was edited at all. The drawing scene is just how i remembered it.
@josebarrozo7620 nope, there was a shot of Winslet naked full frontal before sitting of the couch, it was taken off and the shot of Jack looking at her was extended to fill the time.

@@daytrippera I checked this myself today and this is wrong. The blu ray version didn’t have the full frontal shot of Kate Naked either. Maybe that was only on the dvd and vhs versions. I personally don’t care because the value of the movie to me is not seeing Rose porn lol.
@@daytripperahowever I see now that you never claimed it was on the blu ray version, you said just the theatrical version has it, so sorry about that but yeah it’s probably on whatever they play in theaters, dvd, and vhs that have that scene unedited
Got to see this in 4K 3D in the theater and it looked SPECTACULAR. Saw The Abyss last night too and it looked great too!! Now let's hope True Lies and Aliens look that good as well.

135 dollars is absolutely ridiculous, more fool those who buy it. 50 dollars is even asking a bit much, not premium at all. I’ll just be buying the standard 4k with slip cover.

I was really impressed with the transfer on Titanic, exceptional well done being a 90s movie. Totally happy with it and couldn’t really ask for more.
Question: French & Spanish audio tracks are listed on the packaging. Are there any additional foreign-language tracks not listed? Thanks.
its not a super fan collectors edition when the director said there is no point in doing an extended edition, i downloaded the extended edition. and everyone that jack and rose meets on the ship have more character arch as to how and why their story came to be when the ship was sinking. i will stick to the extended i downloaded 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Yeah, I felt as soon as I saw that box on pre order that it wasn’t gonna be worth it (for me at least). Already have 2 special editions with loads of extras, one on VHS and one on Blu-Ray. But I’m glad to hear the 4K was worth it. Has mine pre ordered, but doesn’t release in Sweden until next week. It really is one of my favorite movies, so exited to hear it was done right, and gets me even more hopeful for The Abyss, have been wanting a rewatch of that movie for 6 or 7 years now, but kept pushing it up since there were talks of a Blu-Ray even back then.

This movie looks really good even though the bitrate was in the 50s mostly. Why does it look better than movies with bitrates in the 90s??
Right on the money, pardon the pun, solid price would be $70 after taxes. Titanic is a must-have for me, but I can wait for a holiday sale.

The only thing worse is stacked discs. I had to send Tenet 4k back to Amazon because of scratches on the 4k disk because it was stacked on top of the special features blu-ray disc. Still waiting for my replacement.
@@JonnyFlash80what do you mean by the stacked, like they put two discs directly on top of each other held into the same single snap in holder thing?
@Gawlakman yep. I've seen it a few times now and haven't been collecting that long. Why they always put the 4k disc data side down on another disc is beyond me. It has the highest density, so scratches should affect it more.

Thanks for the review Jeff! This is a childhood movie going back to the VHS pack with two tapes, where you had to switch it midway. This movie's soundtrack has been stuck in my memory all my life. Owned the DVD & blu-ray as well. Will definitely be buying this soon.
I get what you are saying Jeff about these 4K’s, when done proper, look almost 3D ish, because the image quality pops off the screen. Even just on my IPad, these images of the film are popping. Not my all time favorite film. But I am excited to pick this 4K up. I am super tired of these release having these garbage cardboard holders for the discs though… $130 for this set is absolutely insane though. I just want the movie. The set to me, isn’t over a $49 set, with the movie…
For me, this was a excellent premium release with plenty about it to love.

Was it really filmstock or did the mentioned problems result in the Super 35mm process? This process required movies to be filmed in 1:1,33 4perf 35mm (full aperture). In post production a widescreen picture was then "extracted" from this full frame and anamorphically squeezed for theatrical release
The locations of the scenes is interesting, when Rose goes to find Jack after he's arrested she turns left at the bottom of the lift on E Deck, but on the real ship you can't turn left it's just a wall to the left of the E Deck lifts.
I’m sure there’s a lot of things like that but Janes Cameron did his best to make the ship as accurate as possible for the time of making it. I’m impressed that the giant life size replica ship was built using real build prints for the actual ship.
I picked up the set being sold on Amazon Japan, similar style slipcover but in a smaller form factor more like what we are used to with a shelf limited edition rather than the coffee table, also a bit cheaper.

I am huge Titanic fan and the film always has that special place for me since I was young, but yeah no way is that set worth it. I'll grab the standard 4k am perfectly happy with my Titanic tie in book (So great by the way if your a fan) that came out when the film was released in 97
Wasn’t Lord of The Rings not an upscale from the 2k master? And some DNR was used on the 4K discs as far as I remember the reviews back then. They didn’t re-render all the effects for the UHD release as far as I know.

We live in a very small space.
What is it with people attributing obvious DNR and sharpening to the film stock on this release? Under no circumstances would I call this a T2 disaster, but it’s clearly been messed with. It’s simply not the film stock. Not to mention, you can’t compare one movie to another movie that used the same film stock unless you somehow have a raw scan of the negative in front of you, which no one does. And even then, you have to take into consideration how they were exposed. If one movie uses a film stock and underexposes it, another exposes it “properly” and another overexposes it, you’ll have 3 different looking images from the same stock. And as far as home releases go, no two releases have the same image processing and compression, so trying to draw conclusions that way is a dead end.
yup this movie looks so heavily messed with I can't believe people can't see it. I think it looks SO unnatural and so over sharpened. It's not awful but it's not natural and unmessed with.
@@toddprit I have less of a problem with people liking the processing - I’ve come to expect that outside of the most egregious examples - and more with it being attributed to something it’s not.
I'm with you on the disc holders the Steven universe collection came with the same sort of thing had to take all the discs out and put them in separate cases because it was destroying the discs. I'm glad to hear the sound and picture is good though.
Would love to see a 3D blu-ray included at that price point. This feels a little "to little for to much" tbf. But will probably get it at some point.

@@GawlakmanI like the 3D, especially because it's 1.78 aspect ratio. On a panasonic player with chroma upscaling, the colors are even better for a blu
I hate that these collectors sets are constantly utilizing cardboard sleeves. Fraggle rock Blu-ray did it, Star Wars saga set did it
Looks fab but I think I’ll wait until it comes down in price. Over at the big A, it’s like $138. Not sure what it is at Bull Moose but thank you for the review. I still have the set that came with the VHS tapes. The placement of the discs reminds me of how they did the 100th film Warner brothers set, very hard to remove them without damaging them.
Can't watch this just yet cause mine arrives tomorrow and I don't want to be spoiled but I just got back from the Abyss remastered shown at my local Marcus theatre and I have full faith this was handled with care cause Abyss looked like it was shot yesterday (outside of the 1989 VFX shots lol). Can't wait to watch this and for the Aliens release next year now.

I think they used super35 mm cameras and film stock back in the day, maybe this is the reason the picture looks with less grain... Imdb has the technical details about it
