      Yeah, Brionac makes a huge difference. You'd go goblin zombie, e-tele, search mezuki, and already have the brio on field to send it to grave, along with other mezukis plagues and malicious you might have in hand to extend plays.
      Also, notice how the entire TCG synchro pool for this deck can only out monsters by battle, where brio can easily out things like colossal fighter. The difference that card makes is something like the difference electrumite makes for pendulum decks.

    • @pandaman1331
      @pandaman1331 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    • @tonberryking42
      @tonberryking42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@pandaman1331 This *was* during an era where you were expected to only ever pull the card out once and have the resources for its effect once, MAYBE twice; and if you could pull it off more than once, you were probably already going to win without it. This was ALSO the era where level 6 generics could be better than more niche 8s for some reason. And then took almost 10 years for the best level 6 (later second best, with the release of Brionac) to be harder to summon than the Generic *vanilla* 6 released in the same week. Seriously, the reason they errata'd Goyo to need an earth Tuner is 100% because if all you needed is ATK why the fuck would you EVER summon Gaia Knight, the Force of Earth?
      At least that's what the design ethos for the cards were at the time. It took Konami way to long to realize that's not how reality worked. So they put soft once per turns on a bunch of early to mid Xyz Monsters; which on paper makes sense. They're not as spammable as synchros, since their material doesn't go to the grave for resurrection abuse. Further, even today, Xyz Monsters inherently tend to have limited possible activations, since not very many of them have an effect when empty, and of the few that did have an effect without materials were incidentals, like no targeting, or some continuous effect; and that design philosophy has mostly survived up to today as well (just with actual HOPT clauses).
      But because of the limited uses of an Xyz monster's effects, AND you couldn't use them profitably for an Xyz Summon (until Zoodiac; things like F0 and the Utopia lines were fine because of how limited in scope they were), if you could summon a second copy of an Xyz Monster, there actually wasn't a problem with having its effects be used again - it took so many resources without interruption to get there that it was almost always a case of over-extension into "better have it" territory.
      Since then, Konami printed Zoodiacs, noticed that they fucked up with Master Rule 3, and realized that by the time 3 to 6 years pass from the start of any given era, new blood would be in R&D, Shueisha and board members would push for ever more chase cards, etc, that it's better to future proof and just slap HOPT clauses onto anything that either directly plusses the player, minuses the opponent, or is easy to summon.

      I'm pretty sure that more speaks to Alex and Joseph's charisma and ability to host a show. When MBT said that the game was staring at your opponent and the one who blinked first was the one who lost, he wasn't joking. Even without Gorz, you would not commit to anything unless you for sure 100% had lethal, because if you missed it, your opponent would not need lethal - you've already sunk all your resources and your opponent would have all but full control of the duel.
      I can tell you that, while it's a lot of fun for us the spectators to see either of them top deck the EXACT card they need in a turn, it certainly felt a lot less fun for Cimo when MBT dropped Lightning Vortex.

    • @rando7096

      LYZZY SMYTH yeah I think the barrier of entry being funds is the only bad thing imo. I personally like skillful formats that have a lot of interactions etc even if tier 0; if anything, being tier 0 makes side decks much more focused

      @rando7096 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Laughing Luna them being good hosts has nothing to do with the plays. The format seems like a cold war where anything can kill your opponent and so everyone just takes it slow, but that kind of game design is always awful as a player anyways. I’m talking about the many branching paths of plays both of them had, the combos they went through, and I think with some tweaks, dad mirrors can actually be very fun if it wasn’t for the “waaaaah tier zerooo” stigma.

    The turn player activates their optional trigger effects first in SEGOC, so you should never crash your colossal fighter into your opponents as the non turn player can target your target, leaving you with nothing. A modern day example that is similar but works out to the turn player's advantage is in the striker mirror. If the turn player has roze in GY and a striker link and the non turn player has raye in GY and their own striker link, if you crash the links the turn player's roze will trigger before the non turn player's raye such that the roze will be able to negate the raye's effect since it's summoned after the raye.

    Even though this format was trash, it's quite nostalgic watching the zombie special summons, going +infinity with Card of Safe Return, actually summoning Thought Ruler Archfiend, and even making use of Threatening Roar, which is a card I really like!
    My greatest memory of playing synchro formats was in the 2009 nintendo DS game, I believe it was march banlist and onwards (mixed with some hidden arsenal cards that were OCG back then). There were Blackwing, Lightsworn, Zombies, Synchro Cat, Gladiator Beasts, Anti-Meta, such interesting decks, and it was when they figured out how broken some cards were, like Card of Safe Return and Solemn Judgment. I hope to see some duels using those decks. Synchro Cat OTK with pre-errata Dark Strike Fighter was bonkers!

  • @pandaman1331
    @pandaman1331 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Now this is what I've started watching the history of yu-gi-oh series for. We've got to see pretty much everything I wanted. Card of Safe Return, Zombie recursion into a board of Synchros, we even got to see why Goyo Guardian is a Synchro era staple and the best level 6 Synchro (yet). Especially the third duel was awesome, it was an all out war. Both sides didn't flinch at all and went at it full force and by the end it got really exctiting because you didn't know who would win. This is peek yu-gi-oh entertainment. Keep up the awesome content.
    PS: The Zombie varient is my favorite one. Not because it can abuse Card of Safe Return, not because it can spam Synchros but simple because of how much they can banish and special summon from the grave. This was the easiest deck to control the amount of darks to special summon DAD

My very first tournament expirience was a regional I visited with some friends to see how it is to play with other people. With a copy of each spellcaster structure decks, that were available at that time, we played in the tournament and I had a blast, despite being crushed by TeleDAD left and right. For some masochistic reason this was the spark that inspired me to start playing this game competitively and now I'm addicted to this game for over 13 years now.

    • @Alessandro-rn8tp

      @@CD-zi6rb the chance for MBT to get the same slice 3 times is correct at 1.6%: it's (1/64) x 100, where 64 is 4x4x4. Then, Cimo would have accepted anything except for the TeleDAD as we saw, and he had only one re-spin, meaning there was a 25% + (25% of 25%) = 31,2% chance to get ZombieDAD (am I correct here? Why 43.7% @graboid?). So in total there was a 0,5% chance for this to happen. Yes I'm also fun at parties

    MBT is the turn player so his colossal fighter activates its effect first by targeting one of the colossal fighters in GY.
