  • Jake Elliot's Field goal may just be the greatest kick of all time. Very hard to tell and score all the kicks but I think it very well may be. I would love to hear your guys' thoughts in the comments!

    never missed a kick during playoffs
    never missed a game tying kick
    never missed a game winning kick

    Jake Elliot is absolutely underrated. He made his career-long game-winning 61 yarder against the Giants back in '17 which is the year they went the Superbowl. Definitely important for the season, the only thing missing was conditions. He was the backup kicker at the time.
    I really do think Elliot will go down in history as one of the greats. Certainly in Eagles history at least, along side the likes of David Akers who was an absolute stud.

    • @dtmuffinman
      @dtmuffinman 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Too early to say he'll go down as one of the greats, that's the thing with kickers. We see flashes of greatness and incredible peaks for SO many kickers, but what makes the best ones the best are how long they can do it before they just fall off the face of the earth. Tucker is the GOAT because he just doesn't ever decline. We see it so frequently with kickers that come in, have an amazing 1-3 seasons, but then have a bad stretch of games or a bad season and just never ever recover from it.

    Tom Dempsey’s kick from 63 yards with half a foot should get honourable mention. Some say that the kick sounded like a cannon off of his foot. You tube it with actual sound from sideline for best effect. Elliot’s kick is in the top 5 no doubt but Dempsey deserves similar accolades.

    • @ScrewFlanders
      @ScrewFlanders 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      During my college years (late 70's to the early 80's), I knew a guy from Detroit who had traveled with his dad and brother to see the game in New Orleans in which Tom Dempsey kicked the 63 yarder. My friend told us that the Detroit fans were seated together in a section of the stadium.
      When Dempsey walked out onto the field, the fans from Detroit were really vocal in making fun of both the distance that Dempsey was trying to kick, and of Dempsey's deformity (it was a different era). Keep in mind that in those days, the goal posts were on the goal line, so the spot was really well on its way to being close to the Saints' own goal line.
      The Detroit fans were making as much noise as they could when Dempsey kicked the ball, and the _percussion_ of Dempsey's kick shut up Detroit and New Orleans fans alike. My friend claimed that it was like an M-80 going off - it was _felt_ as much as it was heard. The whole stadium was stunned by what was essentially an explosion.
      Then, when the ball just cleared the crossbar and both refs (also looking somewhat surprised) signaled a field goal, the stadium erupted, and the Saints fans lit into the same Lions fans that had just been mocking the Saints' kicker, who was essentially the *embodiment* of someone who was "differently abled."

I was on the edge of my seat this entire game, and when Elliot came out to kick I knew the odds were against him but if anyone could do it, it was him. This kick was so unreal. Not even being biased because I am from Philly. The way he drilled that football and kept it at a low angle was unreal. He absolutely roped it. Would love to see some sports science on this kick.

    What comes to my mind is the Jack Dempsey Field goal against the Lions in 1970. I watched as a unlikely kicker, kicking straight on and not soccer style, born with a club foot, kicked a 63 yard field goal to win the game for New Orleans. It had never been done and wouldn't happen again for another 28 years. It took 43 years to surpass it.

    I remember a dude kicking a FG to win a playoff game, in the snow. Can’t recall his name. 😉 He later kicked the FG to win the Super Bowl.
    But yeah, let’s call a regular season game “the greatest kick ever.”

    Gotta put Jake's first 61 yard kick in the greatest ever as well. Game on the line, 61 yards, sent them through to the Superbowl, longest ever by a rookie and a franchise record. Oh, and it was the year he was picked up off the Bengals PRACTICE SQUAD to join the Eagles after being initially waived by the Bengals from the draft.
    He also holds 3 NFL records for a rookie. Longest FG ever (above) longest playoff game FG, and longest superbowl FG. He holds a staggering 6 franchise records: Longest kick (above, but has done it twice) highest completion %, season 50+ FGs, career 50+ FG, longest playoff FG, and longest Superbowl FG.

    I really need us to talk about the holder.
    I see so many clips of this talking about Jake (which is so great!) but significant credit goes to the holder too--
    On snap, the holder has to place the ball at the correct spot, the perfect angle, and laces facing away.
    My man #10 placed the ball and then spun it in a blink... just take a look for yourself!

    i dont think the stakes of the kick are so much for the Eagles as they were for the Bills. The Eagles knew damn well that winning this game made the Bills' chances of making it to the playoffs much much more difficult which realistically for them is something worth considering. The Bills have been super bowl contenders for a few seasons now so knocking them out is definitely going to be relevant for the Eagles post season picture. I understand the steaks aren't super big in the micro, but on the macro the impact that kick had on the Bills trajectory for the season was catastrophic. So while it wasn't a must win, it was definitely an important win.

    It's weird to feel like a regular season, game-tying FG could be in the convo for greatest NFL FG's ever. But I've watched enough football to know that feeling after it watching it live wasn't unwarranted. For a Super Bowl runner up team that's paving a new road back to the big game, with a score like that, in weather conditions like that, against a team like that is what makes it such a great moment.

    For personal bias reasons, no Ravens player will be considered "great" in my opinion. And I remember the old Browns kicker, Phil Dawson, kicking a 40+ yard game winning field goal, in a lake effect blizzard with near 40mph cross winds, and visibility being around 10 yards.

    Going into SF up two games as opposed to one and the implication of another Bills loss to their playoff chances/seeding, the kick may prove to be quite influential on the season. 🤔
