      Is it not obvious enough? NPD numbers earlier this week, E3 is just right around the corner, and then the holidays after that. Foxconn helps to manufacture both the NES classic and Switch. Halt production of NES and double the output of Switch to ready it for summer and winter sales. They've probably calculated with the NPD numbers to sell 900k more in the U.S. for both seasons, ending up selling maybe 8-10 million Switches worldwide by the end of the year. Those numbers wouldn't be happening if both NES and Switch are manufactured at the same time; a compromise needs to be made somewhere and NES was it.

    Theory #5: it's a calculated (units to sell per sales region) marketing campaign to generate excitement towards the Nintendo brand thru nostalgia leading up to the release of Nintendo Switch.

      It still wouldn't make up for the nostalgia value of having a mini version of the console we used to love. That was the whole charm of it. Now, I would hope that they release an NES Classic that could be hooked up to Virtual Console and get access to the entire NES game library. Then all would be forgiven. But it NEEDS that console shape.

    Here are my theories:
    Nintendo is indirectly encouraging scalpers (by releasing a product where they have only produced one or two batch, this has always been the case and is still the case with even the Switch)
    Nintendo is 100% focusing their hardware production horsepower on the switch and its accessories (which will hopefully be a step towards battling scalpers for this system)
    Nintendo wanted the NES Mini to be a "special" limited edition thing, and didn't expect the demand, so they broke down and produced another batch, and realized that its going to be mass produced, therefore not making it a special product, and hit the brakes (which is dumb but possible, although the marketing and MSRP didn't say so)
    A bit different from your third theory, As Nintendo has started to leave their "region-locking" attitude, maybe they're working on a universal product for both market, a full-fledged retro console
    Or as you said, Nintendo simply hates money (which explains a lot of their past business decisions)

  • @MartinOlminkhof

    i wished it was the third one and it was like something like putting shovel night with a return to cartridge, but yeah Nintendo really hates money

  • @1MyNickname1
    @1MyNickname1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason was, the Nintendo Classic Edition didn't make Nintendo any money (maybe 1-2 $ at the most), so it wasn't worth it to continue compared to producing a new home console instead, which makes waay more money. A Gamestop insider also said they didn't want to sell any Nintendo Classic Editions because they were making no money with it. In the end, it was only a marketing tool to get people hyped about Nintendo and Nintendo Switch.

    Nintendo loves the planned scarcity, as can be seen by how they routinely handle amiibos. Apparently they'd rather their potential consumers continue to emulate their library for free rather than offer any meaningful way to deliver their retro library in a convenient and affordable way. Even their VC library is just absurdly, and seemingly arbitrarily, limited.

  • @marzacdev
    @marzacdev 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    And what about a rational business decision such as:
    "Well, we might have problems with the Switch production as it is a complex machine so let's make a simple product meanwhile to fill the gap if the project were to get late, so we can still have some cash flow to pay the team and shareholders ..."

  • @AleXander9KPSN
    @AleXander9KPSN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Theory one is flawed. Just because they knew the switch was coming out doesn't mean they had no reason to release this. They needed something big for the holiday season since the switch wasn't ready yet. This really held them out for the holidays since they basically had nothing else and needed something. It served its purpose, switch is out now, so the mini is discontinued since nes games are coming to the switch real soon.

  • @abergethirty

    The profit margins were very small and they make the real money selling games. The classic came with a set number of games. It was simply cheap promotion and they never intended to sell them past a certain set date.

    1. The product was being produced in Germany which is expensive to begin w/. Nintendo will be back in a year or so making these over in China. 2. The NES classic would be getting in the way of the Virtual console for the Switch but then that doesn't make any sense like Nintendo...

    here is the official statement from Nintendo
    "“Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments
    of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this
    year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check
    with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has
    been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we
    apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we
    greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support
    for this product.”
    (pulled of from IGN website)
    The main statement is that stores will receive the last shipments of the unit for this year, it does not say that it is being "discontinued".. what it could mean is that the device is being redesigned to prevent the loading of illegal roms which has been going on (Nintendo watches TH-cam too) onto the unit and there may be a new release next year. It would be stupid to kill the goose that lays golden eggs..
    Thats at least my look at it..

    The console doesn't make any sense from a brand perspective. Plus, building a new product means supporting a new product (BOM costs, parts supply availability, manufacturing cost, "dealing with China", etc). It's impossible to know why a company makes a business decision without insider knowledge.

      Your point would stand if no one was buying the damn thing... However the NES classic had absolutely ZERO problems competing with those solution. They've been routinely selling for $200+ on ebay since release due to a complete lack of supply to meet demand. Essentially they're telling people to go pirate their library because they have no intention of providing it in any meaningful way.

    I agreed with a couple of your thoughts. The piracy thing doesn't make sense at all though. People have hacked the past systems already, that can emulate all the games. Nintendo knows this. Theres not much they can do to prevent that. Plus people will just download emulators on another system, and play them for free. Even if Nintendo makes the SNES Mini, people will find a way to hack that too. I'm sure people are already finding ways to hack the Switch. Can't see that being a strong reason at all to stop selling it.

    • @Ur2ez4me81
      @Ur2ez4me81 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not... Nintendo left a little message hidden in the classic about keeping things clean & tidy. They knew people were going to hack it & add roms. Hopefully we are able to get our hands on the SNES classic & hack that as well...

These same people could just as easily have ended the NES classic by demanding more money in licensing fees.

    I never understood the hype. Only a handful of games, and with a rpi I can have all of the games for many systems, cheaper.

      Very true, but there's something about an official product designed the way it was that's appealing to long time fans, honestly nostalgia played a heavy part for a lot of people. It could've been done better, and I hope an improved version is something Nintendo isn't ruling out

      Kevin Kenson exactly. A retro pi just doesn't have that same vibe as the nes classic. Plus it's not legal unless you own all the games, which you probably don't

      Lenho The emulators are legal but using ROMs that you don't own is illegal as the copyright for those games hasn't expired.

    I been waiting for months for this to get back in stock, and now you discontinue it. If I want one I'll have to pay 250-400 dollars on Amazon. If Nintendo think this will make me buy their lousy destined for failure Switch, they're sadly mistaken.
    I stopped buying anything Nintendo after the GameCube, and I'm never again buying anything with this brand on it.
    FUCK YOU NINTENDO!!! Yet AGAIN you let me down!

    Nintendo just needed a stop gap until the Switch came out, and you dummies went out and purchased the NES Classic.
