  • Fairing Wilda's port side. Shaping and smoothing out Wilda's curves with everything I got. Fairing is heavy work, but necessary. This is the first step to a good paint job and worth to put some time into. Lots of sanding now, and in videos to come, all to achieve that perfect finish that any boat deserves.

    Your best is THE BEST. The results are 95% prep 5% paint. You have achieved such a great deal on a large project 👍 a job well done and the knowledge you did it when its cruising the oceans will be worth every smile. Shoulders like Conan after sanding. Awesome video thanks.

      😂 The shoulders are getting there 😂 Sadly, my mid section is also expanding.... I blame covid 😂
      I have another 80% prep coming up. Top coat is sadly a long way off, but seeing the first primer coming on is amazing! Still another fairing round to go. I'll make sure to prep as well as I possibly can. Wilda will shine like a mirror when I'm done.... So looking forward to it.
      Thanks for the very kind words! Really appreciate it.

    After your reply to my comment last week: this week is much better straight off the spreader. I bet you will get other people asking you to do their hulls, ha, ha. Keep well and keep on carrying on.

      Thanks Dale. I got a lot of tips after that video. I'll try them all when I can return to the boat. Still quite a bit of fairing to look forward to. For now, corona is keeping me away.
      Thanks again

      Thanks! Getting there. Got more of a uniform color after the first full coat of fairing. It was a pleasure to see the result of all that sanding. Trying to put as little compound as possible on the hull. Saving weight where I can, as well as epoxy. You'll see her in primer soon... Even more satisfying 😊 Appreciate the comment.

    Have you changed your camera or settings? Getting pulsing from something, check back on a previous video wasn't in that one?

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry. We have noticed that as well... It's from the neon lights. I was using them more, winter in OZ. Probably matched frequency. We managed to fix it in the last video, but this time it was really bad and I couldn't quite get rid of it without adding a weird GHOSTING thing that instead made the picture terribly unfocused. I was moving too much, when filming, so I couldn't quite fix it...
      Really sorry about that... We are learning stuff every day, this is one of the most annoying lessons.. Can't go back and fix it...
      I hope we can fix/save more of the footage for next episode.
      Thanks though! Appreciate the support.

      😂 Also a fan of Sail Life I guess? If not, check out Mads and his channel.
      Wilda is a Schionning Wilderness 1340x. The model has been replaced. 1340 adds up to about 45 feet. She is 7.4 m wide. Light weight is 4200 kg and fully loaded, 6200 with a draft of 45cm.
      Big, but slender and fast. Capable of over 20 knots under sail and should, if not overloaded, sail faster than true wind in good sea and wind conditions.
      Perhaps not the smoothest ride, but I'm looking forward to raising those sails.
      But first, some more sanding. 😂
      Thanks for the comment! Appreciate it.

      😂 I can imagine 😂 I've got to say though, it hurts and it's sweaty hard work, but seeing and feeling the shape getting better with every stroke of the torture board is Very pleasing.
      Hope you are enjoying your boat out on the blue stuff somewhere.

    Nice to see another video from you, some Q's if you want them ;)
    Is the construction some sort of balsa wood blocks, made into sheets and then glassed?
    What's the general cost on renting such a large well lit shed, are you on any time constraints.
    Are you able to move Wilda's supports to get access to the points she is resting on at present.

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!
      I love answering all the questions you and anyone else want to ask. I'll try to answer as best as I can.
      The shed was actually built to house this boat. It was built by the owner of the yard and he is rightly very proud of the shed. I pay about 800 aud per month and I can stay for as long as needed. This is a very reasonable price, but like everything else, it adds up. I think it would be hard to get a better deal... Except for maybe south Africa or Thailand. I was looking at building from scratch in Thailand. Qualified and relatively cheap labor as well as excellent access to all materials needed.
      The panels are balsa core. Balsa core is always cut this way when made into core material. It does two things. Balsa would have very poor compressive strength/resistance along the grain. By lining up the fibers perpendicular to the skin you take advantage of the fiber structure, greatly improving resistance against compression.
      This is the essence of sandwich panel construction. Two layers of fibers (in this case multi axial glass) separated by a core (balsa) that maintains separation between the skins. This makes a very stiff panel. The core is chosen depending on the function of the panels. All furniture on Wilda has a cardboard honeycomb core. Light, but not as strong as balsa. Mostly because the core would fail earlier.

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Other parts are strip planked, also with a balsa core, but with a hardwood veneer between balsa and glass on both sides. The forward beam is also a sandwich, but with solid cedar as the core.

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The panels are sold by ATL composites. They have lots of good info on their site.

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The boat is not easy to move in the blocks... I have been thinking about this, and I have come up with a solution.
      Both hulls, under water, are already faired and primed. So I will only need access when I am ready for bottom paint. That will be just before launch, and at the yard I am at i will be able to lift the boat and keep it on the cradle for a few days before launch. I will lift the whole boat supporting only the bridge deck, just making sure that the blocks are placed under the 3 (really only 2) main bulkheads. That will allow for access to both hulls for final bottom coating.

      Building Wilda seems like reasonable rent for Australia. Maybe I’ll join the queue to build in there after you. If I were living in Melbourne at the moment I’d love to help and learn some tips from your experiences - in the meantime I love seeing your videos. I like the design of the Schionning yachts, accessible to people with a willingness to learn some craftsmanship, yet a light weight performer. Looks like a very rewarding journey you have embarked upon. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    Axel, are you going to spray gel coat on the boat?

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. I will paint. Using an epoxy system throughout is easier and I'd say better for an amateur like me. Epoxy primer, epoxy filler and polyuretane topcoat

    • @robertlaird6746
      @robertlaird6746 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@buildingwilda I don't have any knowledge of that type of coating at all. The only thing I know of is gel coat and LP. The LP is a paint that I've seen on boats but don't know how it's installed. I've worked on gel coat boats many times and you can apply it in a mold before the fiberglass is applied. You can also do a fiberglass repair on your gel coated boat. When the fiberglass is complete, you spray on gel coat. I know you said that the way you are going to do it is easier for you but which one last longer and which one is better overall?

    • @buildingwilda
      @buildingwilda  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robertlaird6746 paint systems are a science of their own.
      I have not worked much with gelcoat. I have worked quite a bit with epoxy and polyuretane paint systems in my work. I am a deck officer by trade, working as chief officer in the offshore oil and gas industry.
      The biggest advantage of an epoxy system is that it gives a non permeable protective coating. Covering it with a polyurethane gives you a uv resistant coat, protecting the epoxy while at the same time providing the finish you want. Most polyurethane paint systems are made for spray applications but there are a few designed specifically for roller application. Applying with a roller means you save about 20 to 30% on paint usage and that you don't require any specialized equipment. Also, since you do not have airborne fine particles, you can work safer with the paint. Safety wise with regard to toxicity the polyuretane and epoxy is less harmful, gelcoat is polyester based and contains styrene which is not too nice to work with.
      I'm not saying you can drink epoxy 😂 All of these chemicals are bad for your health.
      Either one could be used. Gelcoat, in my opinion, is better suited for a molded boat. When applying the coating as done on this type of construction, epoxy based systems make more sense. Applying by roller, saves material and labor costs.
      As for longevity, I think both options have similar characteristics.
      I am no expert.. Lots of research is required to decide on the best product for a specific project. I landed on epoxy and polyuretane. I'd like to think that for this type of project it is a superior paint system.

      @@buildingwilda I sincerely hope that works out for you and I look forward to the results and seeing it applied. Pretty much all that your doing is new to me and I'm learning along with you. As for me, I grew up around boats and racing them. I was also part of a junior program at a local yacht club. We were taught boat handling skills in terms of being a better racing sailor. As a result, I won many events over the years and loved every moment of that experience. Then I got into delivering large boats and racing catamarans. I had a Tornado, Nacra 6.0 and three Nacra 5.8. Now I have a Laser and a Nacra 5.8 and they both haven't seen the water in about 15 years. I need to clean them up and sell them because I'm not using them. I'm a carpenter by trade and am building my home at the moment.

      @@robertlaird6746 that's a lot of boats and sailing! I grew up by the water, but not much sailing, a little bit in the navy and a bit with friends. A career at sea has not deterred me from spending more time on the ocean... Except probably the North Sea winter time 😂 I'm looking forward to properly learn how to sail.
