  • The differences in spark quality with a basic conventional single electrode non-resistor and resistor plug. Gold Palladium and platinum fine wire types, And also the very latest Iridium TT (Twin Tip) by Denso.
    As you would expect, with a conventional plug, non-resistor produces a stronger spark.
    However, The fine tip of the iridium delivers a much more concentrated and intense purple colour. Especially the twin tip appears superior to all the others even though it has a resistor.
    But these differences between any of the spark plugs would still be hard to detect in terms of increased engine performance. If your plugs and ignition system are in good condition you should be fine using any plug. But you may gain a more stable idle, faster engine starting and possibly a couple of horsepower with the Iridiums. Just don't expect miracles.

    we did a dyno test with a ls3 engine and we tested standard copper spark plug and platinum spark plug and iridium and the copper cheap spark plug made 3 horse power more than the other 2 plugs

    Don't forget that this is in atmospheric pressure only. The spark can change dramatically under pressure.

      Yes, the iridium type will outperform all the others due the lower voltage required from fine tip. A big advantage at high cylinder pressures

      @@munnsey Absolutely. Over 30 years ago I was a motor mechanic and I had a Norton Commando which I'd tuned. The compression ratio was around 11:1. The mixture was always on the rich side, and I'd fitted electronic ignition. Even with new, Champion or Bosch plugs, I would sometimes have to kick start it 4 or 5 times, and I was a slim young man. I would be a heaving wreck. When I discovered the new gold palladium NGKs, it would always start first kick, and seemed to run much happier. That was a great practical demonstration. Like you, I bought some NOS gold palladiums from Ebay, and I use them in my BMW K bike.

    Interesting watch, but may I make a suggestion ? If you do another, could you place a bit of black card or something behind them so the spark will show up easier, as it is difficult to see against bubble wrap !

    Hi, Thank for sharing this. Question, does having a resistor bring down the noise, that it is supposed to help with?

      Yes, dramatically.

      @@axelsaul4207 It offers better protection than a plug without a resistor. But you can't use that BK plug. It's a projected design. You need to source the BR7EIX.

    When fault finding my 2 stroke 70cc for misfiring at 25km/h, both plugs tested good for continuity and live spark when removed for fast kicking. As always in double checking and a good eye [not] , one plug indeed was a bright spark so it was promoted successfully with releaf [luck ]. So they can fail under load with a weaker but still ok spark , and the winning spark plug had a twisted earth pointing it's edge to the electrode . ls this smaller spark landing area responsible for stronger spark ? Can we snip a point on any the earth then ? Mmm...lol

    • @munnsey
      @munnsey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Infact a known trick for racers is to cut back the electrode strap and shave the end to a sharp point. It works but of course that concentrated area will the wear fast and create a large gap. Fine if you want to change plugs often. Best option these days would be a switch to iridium twin tip type. Then you will get the same gain but the metals used on the tips are far more resistant to wear.
