  • In this episode, we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, to Eildon, Victoria Australia. We camped the first night at Breeze Holiday Park, Eildon. The Goulburn River runs past the back of the park. I show what the park has to offer.
While camping in this episode we cooked ramen noodles, baked potatoes in a campfire, chilli con carne, ham and cheese toasted sandwiches
We camped at Breeze Holiday Parks Eildon & Rubicon state forest.
    We visited the following sites:
    • Eildon
    •Lake Eildon
    • Fishing
    • Lower Rubicon power station
    • Snobs falls
    • Yea
    • Victoria fisheries snobs creek fish hatchery
    • The Provender Country Bakehouse
On the first morning we head up to Snobs Falls, which was an amazing sight! We then tried our luck at fishing, and I made us chili con carne for lunch. That night we free camped at Rubicon state forest. We lit a campfire and enjoyed some campfire cooking. The next morning, we used our splitter to cut firewood and took a stroll to Lower Rubicon Power Station, which is a short walk away from the campgrounds. On the way home, we stopped off at Yea to grab some lunch from the local bakery.
Eildon as a township came about due to the construction of the Sugarloaf Reservoir. The township of Darlingford (which was located near the junction of Big River and the Goulburn River) was established in the 1860s, when gold was discovered nearby, however, when the construction of the reservoir commenced in 1915, which would ultimately flood the land behind the dam wall, including the township of Darlingford and Eildon Station (a run of 25,000 hectares owned by the Thoms). The town of Darlingford was moved closer to where the current township is now located. The Sugarloaf Dam was completed in 1929, and the original town of Darlingford is now completely underwater.
Lake Eildon is a scenic destination for avid fisherpeople, and some of the more common species of fish found in the lake include Redfin, Murray Cod, Carp, and Golden Perch. The lake benefits from the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery Native Fish Stocking program, which in 2020 restocked the lake with more than 500,000 Murray Cod and more than 200,000 Golden Perch.
Snobs Creek Falls is roughly a 25minutes drive away from Alexandra, or 2hrs10min from Melbourne. From Alexandra travel east on the Goulburn Valley Hwy/B340 for 21km. Then turn right onto Snobs Creek Rd (well signposted) which becomes dirt (unsealed) road after 3km. After 2.5km on this unsealed road, you will reach a well-signposted car park (on your left).
The car park has no facilities (no toilets) but has signs about the walks. From the parking, follow a well-established walk that brings you to the upper lookout platform. The walk is just 2 minutes but has some stairs so not suitable for a wheelchair.
We used our open-fire cooking with coals to make some easy and delicious campfire potatoes. A long-time favorite to campers, campfire potatoes are almost as easy as they are delicious. Plus, they are also a natural complement to the entire camping experience. For basic cooking, the potato can then be wrapped in foil, shiny side inward, and gently placed in the coals. The basic baked potato in the campfire is great with butter and a bit of salt and pepper, but it won’t be a great deal different than a baked potato cooked at home and prepared the same way.
We hope you enjoy our channel. We often get asked, ‘what is vanlife?’ Van life is a lifestyle of living in a vehicle full or part-time. The names are compound words that derive from the fact that it is typically done in a van that has been modified with basic amenities, such as house batteries, solar panels, a bed platform, some form of the toilet, sink, and storage space. Some van-dwellers live this lifestyle by choice while seeking freedom, self-sufficiency, and mobility without paying for conventional stationary housing, while for others it may be one step from living on the street or in a shelter. Although the term van-dwelling implies living in a van, many types of vehicles may be used for permanent, mobile living arrangements, including former public buses or school buses, campervans, recreational vehicles (RVs), travel trailers, mobile homes, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and cars.
We enjoy part-time van life, creating weekly episodes that are live at 5pm (AEST) Sundays, and sharing our experiences on our travels with our cavoodle, Twyla. In our episodes we stay at free and paid campsites, showing our tips and tricks on how to make life on the road easier and fun. Come join us on our adventures!
It’s great to see Australian tourism picking up with many people traveling around Australia in caravans, campervans, RVs, and camping in tents. If you enjoy traveling within Australia too, make sure you Like & Subscribe to our channel. Thanks for watching!
