well because Japanese as a whole is generally pretty level borderline and monotone with its inflection and tone so you tend to sound calmer when you speak it conversationally as a result.
Aki should've spoken in Tagalog and Joey in Japanese, that way you both could experience that feeling of not actually knowing what the other is saying aka feeling lost lmaoo
Even that this thing is not perfect, i think that if you know 0 Japanese (or the language of whatever place you are visiting), this product is useful and you it will help you get around.
I love how when someone is speaking in their native language like Joey, their whole tone changes so drastically. Like when I would practice Spanish I would emulate the way my Hispanic friends would intone, but soon as I went back to English they would look shocked and horrified that I spoke English in my average Midwestern accent.
English is also his native language. I’d say Japanese is his second language. He grew up entirely i Australia speaking English, with Japanese spoken at home only.
You should do a "I used Google Translate to Talk to My Japanese Boyfriend for the ENTIRE Day" and it can be a surprise thing/not tell him beforehand what you're doing or alternatively you guys have to complete tasks while only communicating with Google Translate
That would be a nightmare to use only Google Translate to communicate with & have them do tasks only using Google Translate to communicate with each other to convey what tasks for each to do.
Honestly this is so sweet and entertaining at the same time I'll be surprised if the makers of this translator don't want to sponsor you or do future projects
While I love that these translation products are getting better, I wish there were better ways for people to study languages properly. Like in America you really are forced into Spanish, French, or German with no one really doing anything outside of these countries. So if you want to learn Russian, Arabic, Chinese, etc then you are basically screwed.
Here in Canada French is pretty much forced on you until High School, at which point I think you can choose between French or Spanish, and if you want to learn another language, you probably have to wait until post-secondary. I agree that having better access to instruction of other languages would be great. By the way, does the US force Spanish on you like Canada forces French on its kids? I've always kind of wondered that.
In most schools its only Spanish you are lucky to get something else and that something else usually does not get the same funding and support as Spanish which for a lot of us is like why though, I would rather learn a Native American language tbh
@@ripley528 Still better than up here in Canada where you can only do French until high school, at which point you can choose to stick with it or switch to Spanish.
I have a degree in Spanish translation and I learned that although online translators can get pretty close, at this moment in time online translators can’t capture the emotions or subtexts of words. (Think texting someone or getting a text from someone and thinking they’re mad)
Yes it's because they're different languages. The way you speak is part of the language. Pitch, intonation, etc. And since he's actually Japanese, he's doing it properly instead of "conneychaywah joey daysu"
They should do a video with Aki speaking Japanese and Joey speaking English but they can each only hear the translations and just try to have a conversation.
I do think the app was having problems with the pausing, but thats how a ton of people naturally talk, so these devices need to be able to account for that
I love these kinds of videos! Not only because they are funny and fun to watch but also because I can learn a bit every time (I'm also studying Japanese. Simply because I want to be able to talk to my friends who only speak Japanese)
You know, one thing I like to do with Translators is actually say the language I'm learning into it and see how close it will get for me. If my pronunciation is right, if I'm saying the right words, stuff like that sometimes is shown with the translator apps out there. Even google for very simple things helps with that.
That's a lot of 'Congees' to learn 😂 I'm trying to learn Japanese but its so hard when you don't have anyone to convers with as its not a popular language to learn in England.
Hey that’s good, it’s like a head start in learning japanese! I also can communicate with a real native japanese through twitter space because of too much anime! I was able to understand everything he said, even tho i need deepL to translate and reply back to him haha.
The app thought 150 kanji is a joke and did not want to embarrass her in your eyes so it increased the amount to gain stonks in your eyes. Much inteligence very artificial wow.
As someone who is currently studying Japanese and has been burned in the past by translation apps and the like, I am pleasantly surprised at how accurate this translation device is. Japanese is NOT an easy language to translate, which is why most apps can’t do it well.

I'm amazed Google Translate gets a 6/10 for Japanese. I tried English to Spanish to ask in a restaurant if I could take home my leftovers. It came out with something like "Can I undress the remainder?" and the Spanish staff looked very confused.

Well guys, let us all help Aki on her quest to learn 10,050 congees!
there is not that many different ways to make congee
Ingredients
1 x1050 cup raw long-grain white rice, rinsed

Since you both understand both languages, It would be a fun idea to have one of you have ear plugs and then take them off when the translator speaks.
Yea or like be in different rooms, and try and communicate via listening to the app itself

Been looking for a decent translator for some time now. My daughter is trying to learn more Thai to be able to speak with her grandmother.

I was sitting here feeding Joey's lines into Google Translate via voice-to-text. Honestly, it was doing just about as good as TimeKettle.
