D.D Dumbo: NPR Music Field Recordings

- Mystery seems to swirl around D.D Dumbo. We'd heard all sorts of crazy rumors about this solo musician; namely, that Dumbo is a modern-day nomad whose only worldly possessions are his guitar and some crazy customized pedals. But once he arrived for one of our SXSW Backyard Sessions, here's what we discovered: Dumbo was born outside of Melbourne, Australia (birth name: Oliver Hugh Perry). He performs with a 12-string electric guitar, a simple drum set-up and some loop pedals. And he prefers to let his eclectic, drone-filled music speak for itself - so, alas, no comment on the nomad rumors.
If you listen closely to his music, though, one thing is certain: It's hard to nail down Dumbo's influences. As he performed for a curious crowd at Austin's Friends & Neighbors during SXSW, we heard numerous global destinations in his music - including stops in North African deserts, as well as a jaunt to the American South for a touch of the blues. Here, D.D Dumbo showcases two uniquely minimal songs: an unreleased song called "Walrus," and "Tropical Oceans," from his recent self-titled EP.

Aaaand 2022 checking in. Can't believe it's already been 7 years!
Mate I come back in 2022, I can not believe the lack of views
Here at the end of 22 anyone know where he is or what he’s doing?
This man is possibly a genius.
no ... DEFINITELY a genius!
Oliver is a sweet boy, i remember when i saw him live in london it was so awesome hearing these songs hes so good
Who is he? Oliver?
DDs talent is beyond amazing..check out all his music he will not let you down. the vibes are a rush.
I've been listening to his album for the last couple of days and loving it but this live footage is just mindblowing. I had no idea it was just him. Absolutely amazing!
His sound is so atmospheric! Waitin' for next album for five years! Hope he'll gonna record it...
Why is this guy forgotten? He's a genius!
had no idea the walrus track was this old. check him out on soundcloud for the studio version which has even more layers omg!
One mini concert I would have loved to been a part of!! U gotta appreciate artists like this. One of a kind. Cheers Dumbo~!
This guy is amazing. Such a unique sound!
Wow! Amazing... I like how his amp is faced back at himself instead of out to the crowd... makes sense considering it's outdoors and he has no way of monitoring his sound.... very cool style. Thanks NPR for this!
why not just put the amp behind him? facing the audience
Yaco Ale because if he wants to have the loops be perfect he needs to be able to hear it and its alot harder when it isnt facing him
I have watched this so many times. It never gets old and I keep coming back!
Saw this geeza support Tame Impala, was incredible live, just wish he'd release some new stuff, can't get enough
Have you got his new album Utopia Defeated?
Love the ingenuity here, you're great D.D. How cool!
This is one of the best musicians NPR Music has brought to us in a good while. Now I have to see if the rest of his stuff rides within these standards...
walrus played live is INSANE, so beautiful!!!
this boys extraordinary whens he coming back he might just save us
This bloke is GOLD, what a voice and facial expressions. AWESOME!! Us Aussies have some great artist's. Imagine being on Acid, Satan is great song of his on vevo.
I'll return to this version of Walrus from time to time when I need to release emotional tension. Remarkable song. ❤️🥹😢🥲
First song sounds a bit like Battles' "The Yabba". Really dope sounds from this guy, and I think he dropped an album today!
I've been looking for this video for over six years... 😩😩😩
That groove is next level shit man.
Some Acid sitting back with a beer!
Sounds very proggy, love it!
Absolutely brilliant.
I can see the Malí Tuareg blues influences in that amazing riffs
Oh yes! Now I can hear it, too! Mind, as I'm typing this I'm listening to Alihukwe on a different streamer.
a week ago, i saw the name and thumbnail, and dismissed it as boring indie. eventually checked it out and thought, jesus, this isnt bad at all, but itll probably not be that great in a week. nope, ive listened to it pretty much every day since its been put up. i flipping love it and i regret being such a prune about it to begin with. fantastic use of loop pedals, cool songs, and a great voice
this is absolutely amazing, what a talent
I can't help but say that it reminds me of Reggie Watts, but it's completely different. I am in love with this.
Bravo. Very talented young man.
Love the guitar work in 'Tropical Oceans'. Great performance!
These songs sound better here than the album recorded ones.
spaceshipable agree 100%
Wow!! Amazing. Think I'm in love
That was FIRE!!!
Parece que viajaras a un lugar muy lejano...es ahí a donde te lleva esta canción. Me encanta.
Молодец, труд всегда вознаграждается и это этап к успеху.
Будем надеяться, что парень его достигнет.
Please come back
Rad. Super cool.
awesome stuff. its interesting how he picks his guitar so close to the bridge
He appears to be using 'the force' now. I don't think anybody can do what he does if they have to think about it. Look at him hovering, with his foot, as if it's the foot that's choosing where to go. Now, he has either had to learn this through years of arduous conviction or he was born already a full member of the sound he makes. It's astounding.
The wallet as dampener on the drum. The mic that follows the stick even if it doesn't hit.
I find it very interesting that his guitar reminds me of Ali Farka Toure.
The people watching this had no idea what they were witnessing.
Getting a wonderful Eastern vibe from Walrus. They'd love his music in Japan!
Awesome stuff man!!!! Love these songs!!!
So talented. Would love to see this live!

2022 and still sharing
somebody knows what's up with that guy
I wish I knew. I came back to this seeing if anyone else has news. So far, nothing.
@@josephdaumen9560 so sad.
@@josephdaumen9560 He's known to be pretty reclusive, so I'm not surprised he's sort of disappeared. We can only wait for some new stuff when he's ready to drop it.
I miss him! I hope he's okay!
Amazing.
I love this guy
Really unique! I enjoyed it
Brilliant.
A vibe right here
Remarkable
This was amazing
This mf popped in, was amazing, popped out
this is a very nice listen : )
Love the one man band idea.
great sound O.o
Awesome, I don't even care that he just miss-synced the last bass 'kick'. :-)
little bit of desert blues in there
grapsta defnitly some desert blues in there my friend.
What tuning???? its been killing me trying to learn the chord at the end of the main riff
Try Riffstation I think its B Csharp Gsharp minor Fsharp and Dsharp minor
I've been doing my own tab for this, and I use drop D
Please make a new album!!!
Abbiamo gli stessi gusti, precisi precisi
wow.
GOD
MORREEEEE
Does anyone know what that black pedal is inbetween the two akais?
looks like a loop switcher between the two headrushes.
So is that what makes it possible to record with both pedals at the same time, thus keeping them in sync? The loop switcher?
Thought it was a loop switcher but can only see 1 XLR in and out, so I think its a Loopi mic mute, maybe to avoid bleed from the mic when recording loops?
Same Damn Thing. SAME Damn Thing. Over and over again. David Byrne called and he's pissed.
Does anyone know what shoes he is wearing?? help
Need this information please guys!!
Shot in the dark here, does anyone have a tab or at least for the riff in this song? Can't seem to find it anywhere
gotta Sting vibe going......cool tho
好棒
Shame he seems to have moved off of Bandcamp and over to the darkside(s), still I just ordered the CD.
His pedalboard is giving me a raging guithardon, does anyone know what loop pedals he's using?
it looks like he has two Akai Headrush pedals
Yep. Akai Headrushes. They're actually pretty cheap now, $69 new on eBay.
