  • This is my raw tour of the small, 352,544 square foot Columbia Mall in Buckhorn, PA from July 16, 2021. This was a very dead mall located about an hour west of Scranton. The mall opened in 1988 and was developed by George D. Zamias of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The mall originally opened with Sears, JCPenney, The Bon-Ton, and Hills as anchors. It was struggling for many years until finally closing on March 31, 2022. This video is presented with no music in order to illustrate how quiet this mall was during its final year of operation.

I like that you didn't dub this with any music, to show how quiet and very dead this mall is like. I like the inside look of this mall, too bad this mall got so dead, to the point it closed. I assume Dunham's is still open here?

Straight from the 80s is right. Love the spacing of the green plants everywhere. Good job!!!

The old school PayLess Shoes signage, the ultra 1990s pastel colors of the walls and tile floor and numerous artificial plants all stand out for me in this video. Definitely a "time capsule" mall, preserving the aesthetics of the era it was built in. It's like the mall version of a Jazz Cup. One thing this now closed mall had going for it was the amount of natural light and airy, wide open concourses. And as usual with dead malls in this region, a "now hiring" Dunham's standing out like a beacon in the darkness or rather stillness (at least at the time this video was recorded). Thought I saw a Subway in there as well that might have been open for business.

I stay in this area when I go to Knoebels. The mall may be dead, but there’s a really nice Holiday Inn Express nearby.

My family was cheaper, we stayed at the Econo Lodge and even went to the mall a couple of times when the Sears and JC Penny were still there. Of course it sucked as a young boy having to deal with his mom going clothes shopping while on vacation, but even then I thought it was a dead mall.

Owner can’t sell or auction off the mall for the price he wants. So in comes Ollie’s and Michael’s. He states if he can’t sell the mall, he will open the mall (maybe meaning the inside?). Arby’s is also going but outside next to BK. So I guess he is gonna repurpose the mall in some way?

"opening the mall" sounds like a crazy idea considering this footage is already 3 years old and the place was in a pretty bad state then, with the roof leaks and mold and all. but, if he does reopen it, i'll definitely go back and get more footage

Sad this mall once was busy not it's a shell. Online shopping has killed the malls

This mall was dead way before online shopping, it was built too large for the area it was in. Online shopping has not killed malls, what has really been an issue is department store consolidation and mismanagement.

Nice. Shame to see this mall go, given the '80s specimen that it was.

What’s going to happen with the mall now that it’s closed? do they have any plans for using it for something else?

The mall is currently up for auction. Any number of things may happen with the space, however I believe the most likely outcome will be demolition

The doors were unlocked and the mall was technically still open for business, despite having a 99% vacancy rate.

This mall was de-facto finished off by the COVID-19 shutdowns, but due to lease agreements couldn't shutdown until March 2022. At that point there was no heat, functioning bathroom locks, or soap in at least the men's bathroom. Mall was also taking on a lot of water.
