- This is the Hornby B17 locomotive that Steve donated to me a short time ago. It used to be the 61656 "Leeds United". Now it isn't!
Thanks very much again to Steve for donating this loco.

Delighted to see this channel back. I really missed it and watching the layout in action.
Fingers firmly crossed that all is well with the OOBill household.
That's the great thing about using your imagination a bit for your own layout and not sticking to prototype , accuracy and realism or rivet counting or what ran where or when. You can name and number your locos to suit yourself and to hell with the rest . It's your personal layout after all . Well done Bill you have given another aging loco a new lease of life and you can enjoy it too .
I second the motion for the "Train Doctor"! Fascinating to watch and learn from you. Thank you.
Hey Bill, see you haven't uploaded in a while.. hope all is well can't wait for the next one
It is a joy to see you work. Thank you for sharing!
I have rather missed your tutorials of late! Good to see you are back with another excellent vid.
Nice to see you back, love your repair/service video's
Cheers!
Chris
Another nice job, the company I used to work for installed a lift in Glenkinchie Distillery, small world in deed
Welcome back bill, excellent job on what is a very interesting loco 👌
Absolute result. Brilliant as ever. Well done Bill
Another great job. After watching your videos I decided to have a go at fixing my old Lima warship , it now runs like a dream. Thanks👍🏻
Well done mate,great result.👍
Very nice job well done. Thanks for another good video
Thanks for the suggestion as to what to get my dad for his birthday. He likes single malt whiskey, so I'm going to get him a bottle of Glenkinchie.
Excellent choice its good stuff.
Missing you out here in You-beaut-tube land, Bill. Trust you and yours are fit, feisty and fabulous in these challenging times. Miss your cheery posts.
Very nicely done.
Great job Bill. My father, who sadly passed away recently, would have been delighted to see his old engine running so well again.
Bill, nice to see your channel is back. We all seriously missed ya. Hope you had a happy holiday and all is well.
Hi Bill, Nice to see them running a bit better , All the Best Brian
Brilliant job Bill, she looks fantastic now. A lot of these old locos only need time, patience and a bit of love. And of course your skills. You've got a lovely collection of trains and a brilliant layout. Always enjoyable look after yourself Eddy xx..
Your Quite right no B17's ran north of the border on the east coast mainline most situated Great Northern , Great Central sections most Scottish engines were either 4-4-0's Director , Scott or Glen classes or 0-6-0's or even 2-6-0's Loch Class engines . Your repair vids have given new life to some of my old fleet with many more awaiting their turn Thank you
Nice to see a nother video
Glad to see you back. Had me worried. Mick.
Nice one Bill looks great :)
Brilliant nice work
Hello. This was a very interesting. It’s a very nice engine and an impressive railway. I’ve subscribed
Nice one again Bill nice loco that
You are the best!
Nice. Think I would like one of these
Love the b17 class
Just for your info: 61680 was the number allotted to a GC B5 4-6-0 of 1902, but it was withdrawn in November 1948 without having that number applied. It did run for a couple of years with the number 1680.
If my memory serves me correctly, these tender driven B17's were very prone to the motion locking up in service. That's probably why the previous owner added some weight to the boiler.
It’s been a while . Hope everything ok
Very relieved to see the channel content back up. I hope that you're okay Bill.
Absolutely brilliant Bill.Maybe you should rename yourself "Train Doctor"
Hi Bill.
Good job, well done. I love watching you at work as it gives me the inspiration I need to attend to my own locos. As Mr Elliot has stated in this comments section, maybe you should rename this channel 'Train Doctor', or even 'McTrain Doctor' (Sassenach humour ol' boy).
May I suggest that as the engine name has a Scottish flavour, it could be run pulling a rake of Caledonian coaches. Just a thought. 👍
Really missing your videos Bill. Hope all is good with you, that's the most important thing 👍
Very informative video, thank you. I'm a bit worried about your guitar being so close to the heater ! Now off to check out the Whisky, cheers Bill :-]
Don't panic! That heater is just a back up heater sitting waiting to get put somewhere else and is never on.
@@oobill Thanks for that Bill. I Must get round to using contact cleaner for the scratchy sliders on my old Yamaha SK20 !!!!!
Well hello there. Hope you are well. Have truely missed your videos these last weeks. Imagine you are busy with all sorts of stuff. This is a hello, hope you are well and look forward to your next post. All best Marc
Hi Bill, lovely little loco and a good idea on the naming. I didn’t see it in the video but did you also renumber the numbers on the smoke box door??
Yes I was wondering that. I've not had much luck doing smokebox doors. What were the transfers please?
Thanks for the video, always so instructive.
Cheers Tim
Try painting some Humbrol “clear” over the name plate, that will give it some protection
Hi I just wanted to say that you put a Nameplate only on one side but hey other than that Lovely model
Nice job Bill
Nick Australia
I have recently got b-17 from ebay and it runs fine except that all of a sudden the large wheels on the loco get stuck and then wont rotate, gave it a service but cant fix the problem
Hi, missing your videos, hope you are ok.
Bill where are you 😔
Isopropanol is quite good at removing painted numbers
Beautiful looking engine.
How long do you run it to run it in?
I recently bought the Tri-ang Hornby R056 Iron Duke and took it apart and oiled it so it actually runs now.
But it's still a bit noisy.
Wondering if it's just a running in thing.
Cheers, Mon from Brisbane
I wouldn't put a time on it. Either it'll sort itself after a few good runs or it won't. Noise is usually down to the gears or bearings and running in isn't likely to make much difference.
Sometimes a bit of foam stuck to the inside top of the boiler or tender body (making sure it doesn't touch the motor) will deaden the sound, as those places can act as echo chambers, making noise louder.
Are you okay, my friend? I hope you’re simply taking the summer away from the hobby as I have. Looking forward to more videos from you, but if that’s not to be, let us know that you’re alright. We worry, you know, as ubiquitous as that may seem. Be well, and stay safe.
Brooke
Am interested in how you made the nameplate, could you do a video on how to do that please?
I did it using QGIS. I use it in my day job so know how to use it very well but I'm not sure I could easily explain or demo how I did what I did as it isn't what the software is actually for and there's a lot to learning how to use it. There are probably lots of graphic design applications that would do a better job but I knew I could do it using QGIS. It's a free GIS application though for maps etc.
OK. It’s a GIS software package? I am familiar with the software as I was in Consulting engineering fir many years primarily using Bentley Software.
My first experience with it was “draping” contours over a 3d model .
I know it developed into a data driven software that could be used for a myriad of subjects including demographic data collection/development.
I guess you could use Photoshop or similar however my copy of PS is crashing at the moment.
On another note, I am trying to get my trains organized as I have stuff everywhere while continuing to try to make videos🤣
Keep up the great work👍
Some of your ubiquitous T Cut will remove the numbers!
And probably some of body paint! I actually used a very small amount of contact cleaner to loosen it and then the water and spudger to scrape it away.
@@oobill Hi Bill. T Cut will work without taking off the paint. Just dab it on with a cotton bud, let it sit for a minute then gently use a clean cotton bud to remove the numbers. Rinse clean with a wet tissue before applying new numbers. To get them horizontal use a thin strip of masking tape and start with the middle number and work out each side.
Hi Bill, Thought you might find this interesting. 61680 was a real engine. It was a Robinson Class B5(GCR Class 8). chasewaterstuff.wordpress.com/tag/robinson-4-6-0/ . Lovely engine well restored.
What’s happened Bill. Hope you are coming back again soon.
Are you going to put a nameplate on the other side
Did you varnish over the numbers afterwards?
No. I wouldn't do that as it makes then too difficult to remove if desired at a later date.
Where did you obtain you decal's from? I've been looking for over 2 years to find a set like those
Ebay
@@oobill Most have looked there 500 times, still never found a good set
Look for Modelmaster G201 BR Steam Loco Lettering
What's the point of weighting the loco, given that it's tender-driven? If it was already heavy enough to run smoothly, adding more weight just makes the train overall heavier, giving the motor more work to do. And adding weight high up like that may even make the loco wobble more.
The point is to increase downward force on the loco to improve conductivity. Adding weight doesn't make the loco wobble. Wobble is down to uneven track or poor loco construction. With either the conductivity will be improved the heavier the loco is no matter where the weight is added.
@@oobill RIght, the weight wouldn't make it wobble _per se_ but, when it hits the unevenness in the track, you now have a greater mass moving, which may go farther. But thanks for the explanation about the pickup -- I see the point, now.
How do you remove traction magnets from inside a triang steam locomotive? Or can't it be done
If it's the ones set into the chassis you can bash them out with a hammer and punch.
@@oobill thanks Bill. It's going to be a job but can be done. I'm surprised you haven't done a video on them before.
@@TheAntisocialTrain I've only done it once and that was on my Flying Scotsman. Worth it though because those magnets tend to pull one set of wheels and chassis to each other too much which affects the running.
@@oobill yeah my stuff has a severe wobble which isn't caused my the motor or the wheels. And also I asked about my class 37( yes that was me) and it has improved runnjng
Hi Does anyone know if Bill is ok hope your ok Bill.?
Absolute result. Brilliant as ever. Well done Bill
