90% of the art style complaint you have is because of the lighting. It looks flat and uninteresting because the lack of shadows. Looking at the game, you get basically two tones of light - one grade of shadow and one of sunshine. So if you're standing in the shade, everything looks flat and without depth. If Avowed turns out to be a great game, it's going to attract a lot of Elder Scrolls fans. There's really been no game quite like Skyrim until now, but Avowed looks like it's Elder scrolls's spin-off with stunning visuals and gorgeous art style.
@@FlashesSoccer011 Yeah I'm with you - they look fairly dated like they're using the same engine and lighting that Obsidian (same dev) used for Outer Worlds.
This is in no way a criticism towards the game, just my personal opinion. The only thing that is making me not interested in an Obsidian game for the first time is the art style. I am not saying every game has to have a serious tone and art style, but when everything is colorful, bright, and happy, it is very hard to take anything seriously. Perfectly understand that this is the tone of the game they wanted to make. Just not for me, same reason I skipped Dragon Age.
Bright and colorful works in a sarcastic way for sci-fi- it's beautiful, but alien beauty is dangerous. In a fantasy setting, all those colors feel less dangerous and more whimsical. I get it. Not a huge fan either.
I can't stand dark gloomy hazey games like Elden Ring and of recent Stalker 2. Meh yuck depressing. Nothing I want to explore or look at. See people are different, pretty amazing huh. Neither is wrong, preference. Game On!
"- And (companions) *do* have a health bar, they *can* falter.." 👏 Bloody revolutionary game design. Imagine a companion-heavy RPG experience in which your companions couldn't actually fall in battle.. hah! Wouldn't that be so SILLY?! 👁👁
I personally just wish they would tone the UI down a bit... I can live with a cartoony high fantasy look, but all the highlighted UI elements together with the damage numbers and effects is too much for me
I think my biggest problem with the art direction (not style) is the lighting of the world. This is very very workable however, and making the game's seemingly sun-touched world less that, would serve to make all its other elements graphically pop more. I also think the tone and color hues are great in terms of choice, but they simply need to be using slightly contrasted colors, in addition with making the world a lot darker, it'd make those colors seriously stand out but not an in-your-face kind of way. Overall, the game world's visuals got a solid foundation and most of what it needs is lighting and tone work. Although on a personal note, something about the characters faces - specifically humans - feels very...let's say it's almost as if they took a template NPC face mesh, added a few touch-ups, and went from there. Maybe I'm not seeing this correctly, not having played the game, but if I am, I hope they work on it.
As a huge pillars of eternity fan seeing the combat ability tree killed the game for me. I loved the unique take on classes in pillars and seeing it butchered saddens me greatly.
Those character models are awfully uninspired. The combat literally looks like The Elder Scrolls: Blades mobile game. And that fisheye perspective. What were they thinking?
i get why some ppl (or more like most ppl) would consider the need to combine magic with warrior/ranger a downside but for me personally its a huge plus, cause spellswords are my favourite in any rpg so i would combine spells with swords anyway :D
you get more replay ability sticking to a dedicated class. a friendly warrior An unfriendly rogue an intellectual mage whatever playing as a role rather than playing yourself always expands a game and makes the price easier to swallow as longevity becomes a thing
Agreed - the artstyle looks lacking in atmosphere, and seems a little bland - reminiscent of how OuterWorlds feels that way. Kinda cool until you scratch the surface and find a sort of movie-set fakeness feeling.
with how this game's magic looks and how much damage it shows in this video I couldn't imagine not being a wizard but that is always my first choice in any game that has it.
If the CC sucks tho, I probs wont care about seeing my character, lol. And Obsidian not wanting people to show off the CC stinks. Like, what are they hiding?
@honestbenny How? Did they add more sliders for detailed customization? Because thats what BG3 CC lacks for me. Unless its at least at Veilguard or DD2 level, its no option for me.
It looks like a game that modders can do wonders with. Right now, the spells look a little underwhelming, but let modders do their magic and I can see this being a game easily worth 100 hours plus. This goes for the look of the game as well, maybe in 6 months or a year, we'll start getting total conversion mods that really change up the look of the world.
So much UI...jesus...why do i need a symbol next to the mob HP telling me he is on fire, when i can see there is fire on the mob...and why is everything so clean! just look at 1:58 those cloths should be dirty, they are torned but complete and extreme clean... the guy scarf is even unnatural it's so clean.. everybody skin looks like they just used lotion, it's like they are all plastic people, in a plastic world...This is the same problem Veilguard has...even the freaking ruins are clean! lol...like every rock was dusted off before placed
I like the way it looks and one of the few good things about veilguard was the way it looked. I can kinda see your point but I thought veilguard was genuinely interesting
I find the UI around the enemies with the damage numbers and the aiming process with the red arrow really an atmosphere killer, I would love to see a much less lighter UI, anyone else?
You can't show the character creation... well now that's a massive red flag. It's usually one of the most anticipated parts of rpgs before launch. I wonder what are they hiding 🤔
@@thewigit4629 That makes too much sense! Obviously, they're hiding the fact that the game will brick your system if you make a white straight cisgender male unless you select "capable of maintaining a healthy platonic relationship with women" as one of your personality tags.
@thewigit4629 uh? That's nonsense. This is literally the first title I've seen that features a character creator and isn't showing it before release. A good cc is a major selling poit for these type of games. It makes no sense, unless they're trying to hide something from the customers. But don't bother, I've looked in to it and apparently it features pronouns. No wonder why they're hiding it. 🤷♂️
I was worried about the skill trees. The fact that they have AI companions but Rangers don't get pets like in PoE feels pretty bad. The fact that they left out the MAJORITY of classes (Chanter, Monk, Barbarian, Cipher, Druid, Priest, Paladin) is awful, and the spell list for Wizards looks pretty bad too. What was that, two or three fire spells? I'm looking forward to this game, but I was hoping to play as a two-handed barbarian or a fire-themed wizard, but it genuinely doesn't look like I can play something as simple as that. Very disappointed.
Man, this game just looks so disappointing. It's like even more streamlined Bethesda. I wish they'd have put the resources into making a PoE3 in the style of BG3 instead.
Ngl, nothing i see here is grabbing my attention. It just looks like another fantasy adventure game trying to mimic Elder Scrolls while simultaneously telling you they're nothing like ES.
I'm very concerned about the performance of this game. Nothing about visuals of this game warrants just how expensive it is to run, in all honesty the graphics and visual design looks a little unpolished and flat.
It looks insanely dated. I mean pre 2015 level of graphics and animations. This game when it was first shown as a concept trailer was very misleading. It looked cool as hell. This is not even remotely similar to that trailer. It's the typical clownish style look to the game.
@@YouToobLovesNazis This is like a few months to release. Changes to things on the scale of graphics and animations will not happen this late in development. It will definitely stay this way on release.
My only concern as you said is the simplification of the combat. They can create some directional combos for melees and some "posture" styles for variety of attacks and animations. Idk if they have time for this but would be VERY nice for the game. Thats could make the difference between the final game score
Problem with that would be the input speed. How fast do you need to input that set of buttons to do said attack? Oni had a bit of this problem with some moves (most notably the throws) being inconsistent if I would do a throw or not
I don't know why, but something about this game just looks off to me. Perhaps it's just the placement and movement of the arms, but it comes across as janky.
*Pro-tip:* If you don't have the strongest PC, but you do have a high refresh rate display, then you could try capping the framerate to 40 fps and set the display in 120 Hz mode, or even 50 fps at 100 Hz. It should still look a lot smoother than 30 fps at 60 Hz and it'll be a lot easier on your PC. I actually used this trick when playing Elex 2 (which is pretty badly optimized). Even my PC could run the game at fairly high framerates, the fan on the GPU was on full blast! By capping the framerate to 50 fps and setting the screen to 100 Hz it still looked and felt pretty smooth but the PC quieted down quite a bit.
This really depends on if you have a variable refresh rate display or not. With VRR as long as the game is delivering consistent frametimes and the framerate is above the minimum that your monitor supports (often 20hz) then you should get a smooth experience. Of course it comes down to personal preference.
@ I've never seen a VRR display going as low as 20 Hz! But it's hard to even find that info on most displays. What I heard that VRR displays have a hard time syncing below 60 Hz. Do you know which brands or models can go that low? I have a Samsung freesync display but I don't think it can go that low.
@@MoshugaaniFreesync Premium offers low framerate compensation (LFC), meaning if the game dips down to 25 fps for example, the monitor will be set to 50 Hz to reduce tearing. So you don't really need a monitor that can run at 25 Hz

You can judge certain things without playing yo. Game already confirmed some really bad crap before launch lol. It's digital only in that sneaky bs sort of way. The physical disk is nothing without the one time use burn code so it's online only while pretending to not be. Absolutely terrible. If you end up liking the game it's gunna be a pain in the azz playing it in the future as you will have to keep up with newer versions on newer gaming gear. They clearly just suck more these days so confidence isn't the highest lolz. And implying folks need to play in order to judge is kinda silly. I already proved it's possible to judge certain things before launch. Before actually playing. I have eye balls. I can see frame stutters. I can see clipping. I can see copy and paste broey cod mechanics or grapple hooks or whatever dumb trend that keeps getting abused in whatever game is in the works. I've also played games that I HATED at first... But then later learned to love. And then there's games I loved at first but now I will never play them as I've found stuff that's much better or maybe I just changed and don't like it anymore for whatever reason lol. You know it's happened to you as well soooo... Maybe not use this as a gotcha? See the problem with this logic? Would if I said the new cod sucks because it's online only, has micro transactions, feels like the same game every year basically, and has a pretty unfinished launch, especially on pc. Also massive lag online. I know this information is true and I haven't even played it. Are ya gonna tell me to shut up about that one too? Come on lol be reasonable. Sometimes you can just sorta tell how a game will be. You might be off a lil but that's about it. RARELY do we ever think a thing will be absolutely terrible and then it turns out to be ocarina of time quality. That like never happens haha. Usually people guess these things fairly accurately. And it looks like I nailed this game quite accurately. Wont be the worst thing ever but it wont be anything special that's for sure. Especially with that fake physical bs they are pulling. Also heard they wanted to make this coop and then scrapped that idea. Super lame... Also heard them doing some weird pre order crap that's totally not worth it, largely thanks to the better deal over all that game pass is offering. I got my beef with game pass as well but that's another topic haha. I hate owning stuff for only a limited time lol. Feels wrong. Just gimme my game so I can own it until I die thanks... Anyways. Sorry for the long rant. I just don't fully dig what you just said man. Here's a example... "Yo bro, you don't know that next years cod will be online only, unfinished at launch, and full of micro transactions. Lol you don't know! You haven't played it yet! It might actually be one of the best games ever made!" I get your point but do you get mine? lol I think there needs to be a middle ground is all. Don't trust the devs completely... But don't distrust them for no good reason either... So I'm being fair. I'm calling out what sucks and what currently looks like it sucks. That silly T1000 run animation. Those janky faces. Doesn't look the best... Very colorful game and the frames look smooth. It's not 100% bad lolz.
god the perspective is the same its been for 20 years... when are they going to put more effort into the little things that improve the overall of the game, like decent fucken perspective, instead of running around with your boxing guard up
Its so lazy, to not have some actual combat mechanics for each class in this day and age, chinese and korean games have been coming out with flashy melee and range combat, flashy animations for years now but still the west is putting 100% in graphics and 0.1% into actual exciting gameplay gameplay. in asian games your character is flipping round shooting arrows, imbued magick armours, and the whole works, melee fighters are fissuring the ground with slams and cutting enemies to shreds with whirlwind spinning attacks and all that jazz, meanwhile western devs are still just making this trash lol

They where hiding the pronouns in the previews, by telling you can't show character creator or character screen. And of course someone leaked it and thus their art director went nuclear, exposing their woke agenda.
So this game is a slightly better dragon age veilguard. I was actually expecting a bit more complex combat and companion system. Very disappointed. I hope at least the dialogue, choices and story side of the game is better.
I don’t see any appeal in this game knowing that it’s almost 2025. The fire , the combat, water physics all look outdated. Black desert graphics are better and that’s a 10 year old game. Obsedian is a solid company tho but that’s it.
That art style is a hard sell for me. Also having so many chests to find and open really does kill any immersion when away from the uncanny valley NPCs

@@Oozaru85 As long as it's not done to excess, or in a ham-fisted way, or in a way that breaks immersion or rides roughshod over player choice, I can put up with it. I don't like it, but I will still be able to enjoy the game.
It's what happens when every game runs on the same 2 popular engines and isn't made from the ground up like they used to be. Everything becomes similar looking because they're all using the same set of tools

9:24 curious to know what games you’re playing where melee consists of controls outside of right trigger/left trigger or one or two buttons? literally every pure melee or hand to hand build in every game that allows you to build your character consists of “right trigger or left trigger” controls. My first Oblivion play through was pure hand to hand and it was super fun. My second was a play through with swords…. Also one or two buttons…
'Forcing' you into a hybrid caster playstyle if you want to enjoy combat is a really bad sign. It's also a really odd choice to not let you choose your character's race.
Just from the gameplay, it looks interesting. I haven’t noticed too many darker areas. The one thing I’ve been a little tired of lately is overly cartoony and colorful games. But other than that, this game looks pretty cool.
Admittedly not as excited for this as when it was first revealed. Aesthetics are very important to me and this doesn’t look very interesting in that regard, and with how the character progression is set up, I’m not too confident I’ll enjoy it. I always prefer a frontline fighter with some stealth, so having to rely on magic so much is a significant drawback.
What is this game running on, an Xbox? It's really look very dated. I'm also not seeing that Obsidian charm. Hoping this isn't indicative what to expect with Outer Worlds 2.
Thank you for this nice little preview and your thoughts. I am slightly hopefully optimistic now about the game. One question regarding ranged weapons. Are there more options than pistols and bows? Like crossbows or rifles?

This is in no way a criticism towards the game, just my personal opinion. The only thing that is making me not interested in an Obsidian game for the first time is the art style.
I am not saying every game has to have a serious tone and art style, but when everything is colorful, bright, and happy, it is very hard to take anything seriously.
Perfectly understand that this is the tone of the game they wanted to make. Just not for me, same reason I skipped Dragon Age.
Not a fan of the art style either.
Bright and colorful works in a sarcastic way for sci-fi- it's beautiful, but alien beauty is dangerous.
In a fantasy setting, all those colors feel less dangerous and more whimsical.
I get it. Not a huge fan either.

As in every other Dragon Age game. Dragon age companions die only as part of their quest or specific plot points. It has always been like this.
I personally just wish they would tone the UI down a bit... I can live with a cartoony high fantasy look, but all the highlighted UI elements together with the damage numbers and effects is too much for me
yea it looks too gamey/cluttered
True. Way to much UI for my sake. It ruins so much of the immersion of a first-person game...

I hate how Kingdom Come 2 and Avowed are releasing so close together.

Oni had a bit of this problem with some moves (most notably the throws) being inconsistent if I would do a throw or not
Okay, so they force you to play a specific race, and fight a specific way, in a successor game to POE. What a shame.
This game looks awful, bland graphics and game play. Every first person melee game needs to copy KCD's melee system.
I don't know why, but something about this game just looks off to me. Perhaps it's just the placement and movement of the arms, but it comes across as janky.
The arm position was the only thing that really looked strange to me. Could just be that the game was set to a high Field of Vision.
There's something really uncanny about this game so far...
To me, this seems like a game I'd pick up on a sale if it's 15 quid or less. Definitely not a day 1 purchase.
By capping the framerate to 50 fps and setting the screen to 100 Hz it still looked and felt pretty smooth but the PC quieted down quite a bit.
pro-tip: its an Xbox
@@Osoronnophris Nah, he clearly says he's playing on a PC.

That was a while ago and that game, as good as it is, is kind of a joke in terms of how glitchy it runs so this company has always at least... Kind of sucked.
