Hey. Okay Nick Cave's 1st band was The Birthday Party which was influenced mainly by The God of The Old Testament and Heroin. Nick got tired of all that sustained hatred then with the Badseeds he closed The Old Testament and opened up a much more depressing but loving book The New Testament and he loved the stories of The Man of Sorrows and how he would use creativity to combat his enemies. The nice thing about Nick Cave songs is he tells a story with almost every song he writes. You should check out his book "And The Ass Saw The Angel" I think you'd love the song. I think he got off of Heroin in the middle 90's...Thank you for doing this song. Gino Verna is right The Live Seeds Album is the definitive album to listen too, to get into Nick Cave and The Badseeds music. Papa could be God or Papa could be the ghost of his father. If you like this kind of story telling type of music I think you'd 2 will like Nick Cave's whole catalog.

I fucking love this song so much. Definitely one my favorite songs lyrics-wise, not because of the topic in itself, but just the way it's written. That little bit you touched for example, "and the walls ran red around me, a warm arterial spray", brilliant. On top of that, i love the energy in the song, which is why it's my favorite by Nick Cave, since he has brilliant lyrics in tons of them.

Thanks for doing this, guys! I always interpreted this song as being about a single dad left raising a child by himself, and not being able to cope with it all that well. He spends his nights seeking temporary escape, but ultimately seems resigned to his fate (“and I went on down that road, bent beneath my heavy load”).
I doubt that any of it is autobiographical, but Nick used to reside in Brazil when this song was written, and what was happening in that country definitely influenced a lot of its imagery (favelas, the rains, thalidomide babies, etc.)

I do believe the both of you would take much joy and growth from listening to Nick Cave and The Badseeds whole catalog. I think The Birthday Party might be a little too intense and dark since it was influenced mostly by The God of The Old Testament. Yet The Badseeds is something I believe you will like as it is influenced by Jesus, The Man of Sorrows. I do believe Nick Cave b/c he's Australian just gave in donations to a charity in Australia like $500,000 for The Wild Fires.

I LOVE Nick Cave & The Badseeds, one of my favorite bands. Since the “Mercy Seat” reaction I have been listening to it more regularly, and my brain doesn’t know what to do because it’s one of the songs I’d listen to as I drove a good 90mph up I-75-puts me in that driver’s seat mentality, eyeing the shoulders for waiting cars & exit signs.
It’s definitely interesting to see what has been recommended/requested so far, because not one is on my list, heh. I have made several Apple Music playlists meant to introduce people to artists I like, and I made one for Nick Cave, (“8 Songs: Nick Cave”.) I’m more of a Let Love In & Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus gal.
On my list: [1] There She Goes, My Beautiful World [2] I Let Love In [3] Lime Tree Arbour [4] And No More Shall We Part [5] Cannibal’s Hymn [6] Where The Wild Roses Grow [7] Push The Sky Away (Live From KCRW) [8] Red Right Hand (Copenhagen).
If y’all haven’t, I suggest checking out the film Cave wrote The Proposition (2005).

Papa is literally his father, who either "went out for cigarettes" or died when the character in the song was young. The character has fallen in with bad company, and is trying to break free, but in his efforts stumbles into a brothel where he wakes up after a blackout finding that he slept with a transgender prostitute. He kills the prostitute for making him feel less than a man, and the rest are the thoughts going through his head after he contemplates what he has learned from religion and society about what happens to murderers. In this situation, though, nothing happens to him. He leaves the town and continues on somewhere else, carrying the guilt with him, as well as the guilt for the death of the woman he's singing about and the life he has led up to that point.

Loverman or Red Right Hand next. My two fav Nick Cave songs.
Some clarification too, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds aren't exactly country. They're usually described as folk/Americana rock. Think Bob Dylan or some of Johnny Cash. Similar sounding, sort of, to country, but with a very different lyrical emphasis. Less about the mundanity of everyday life and more about stories, tales, and legends. The Devil Went Down to Georgia is a good example, as is Ghost Riders in the Sky.
