It was refreshing. Part of what made the final ascension towards the dead sun so difficult was literally EVERYTHING was on the line. Existence itself. The fascinating thing to me about Zenos is that his entire character is driven by misunderstanding you and thinking that underneath the heroic surface you're exactly like him. But by this point, he's probably the only person who *fully* understands who you are. That the hero, the Warrior of Light who rushes forward to help people and save the world for no reason other than it's the right thing to do, isn't just a facade but the genuine thing... but that there *is* a part of you that *is* exactly like him. That used to cheer in excitement after every hard-fought win, that went into dungeons for no reason other than they were there and in a past life once fought an active volcano for some grapes. And in this moment, where you finally have no fight left that *needs* fighting, he gives you the opportunity to indulge in that part of yourself for the first time in a *long* time, and it feels *epic.*
In another turn, the fight against Zenos is also a *need*, because he won't stop pursuing and stir anger otherwise. Since my character is basically my avatar, I will say this: I took the second option and am glad that I finally got rid of him. Also for the fact that he spoiled the finale with a lame solo instance after that banger of an Endsinger fight. Also his arc isn't concluded yet, not by him but by his "voidsent" is a very real possibility
I actually really hated this fight BECAUSE there was no fight that needed to be done. I really just wanted to leave him there. I didn't want him to have this satisfaction at all
Zenos talks to the player twice during that whole thing. First time he asks if you're a challenge seeker just like him. Then with his dying breath he asks you if you've enjoyed the game and if the journey was worth it for you. I didn't mind Zenos before EW but I didn't care much for him either, but EW made him really interesting. He's still the same character overall, but it's like he's become self-aware.
Someone else was explaining this to me and I thought it was a cool perspective, at this point in the game, Zenos is the only person who doesn't address you as a hero, the warrior of light, etc. but as an adventurer. Rather than being trying to be the ultimate villain warlord of doom to be challenged by the hero, he went up and just challenged you.
@@archwing3441 I agree, but at the same time, I can't ignore the fact that while you fight him in the world of dynamis, what keeps you alive and keeps giving you strength when you drop down to 1 hp is his belief in you. His belief in that you're invincible is so strong, that it ironically makes it impossible for him to beat you. He may not address you as a hero, but he undoubtedly sees you as one and looks up to you, puts you on a pedestal, maybe even worships you. Why else would he have traversed the entire galaxy just to find you? Consider how long and lonely the trip must've been. He probably knew there would be no way back for him and still he chased after you without hesitation.
@@crimsonpotemkin and considering whole dynamis thing, the fact that we didn't know for sure if he is dead... perhaps he will return in one way or another
Zenos is such a polarising character in the fandom and its wonderful cause you either love the idea of fighting him to the death or you just want to put him down like old yeller
Most people want to put him down because he's a nihilistic psychopath but he's still likeable to a degree and his goals are sort of understandable, if stupid. He's unapologetic about his boredom and desire to feel something, which is something we as humans can understand but must not condone. So while we are in the unique position to accept and return his bloodlust, we must still put him down for good.
Zenos is the classic antagonist turned rival character. He was just the foreboding big bad in SB then became the rival who uses backhanded methods to try and get us to fight them. He’s basically Vegeta. People may not like him in FF because he’s out of place. He’s not a very deep character even after his development. As intended. He’s meant to be a mirror for us, the players (not the WoL) as to why we fight. He’s a really good commentary. Also, i like how he was just someone you just were designed to not like even in EW at the end you’re still not friends and you understand that. You can respect his tenacity but you know he’ll never be good by your standards
@@DeeFourCee I find this line of reasoning moronic because it implies characters like Sephiroth arnt the most highly regarded and well known villains in ff and pop culture. 7 is roughly my favorite, but he has more in common with the T1 terminator than some ascian with a fetish for finger snapping. Zenos was my favorite minute 1 because his mission statement was made loud and clear, "you are pretentious for having complex reasons for murder especially if you can't back it up" and he time and again is the antithesis of every other evil person around him who are spouting long winded soliloquies about why their actions are just. I love complex villains I really do. I started to like his dad and his twisted but understandable logic. But it can just get sickening when you're drowning in hyper idealized murderers with lofty reasoning. Its why my top 3 FF villains are Sephiroth(a creepy manipulator with baby reasoning), Caius Ballad (a dude so sad/angry he chose fuck existence to stop a girl from dying infinitely, and he admits its that simple and selfish), and Zenos (a dude whos only actively part of a war to find someone who can beat them in a fight) Which is funny, cause Sadu is in this game, and I'm pretty sure her personal motivation is super duper shallow but everyone loves her.
@@PrincessNine I find your devolution into personal attacks because you disagree with my reasoning moronic but that’s besides the point. Where did I say Zenos being who is is bad? You assume I said it out of hatred for the character? I actually even said I like him. I liked him straight away, for him being this foreboding challenge. Like the Lich king was for me in WotLK. Whenever I encountered Zenos it was like Halls of Reflections all over again for me.
@@DeeFourCee I find your inability to read your own and my comment moronic. Ahem "people may not like him in FF because he's out of place" I pointed how How that's stupid because 2 extremely popular ff characters, the most popular in fact, Sephiroth, is basically what zenos is mimicking. You name dropped some WoW character so its possible you arnt a big ff fan so you probably arnt aware of it having non complex villains(or in the case of ff8, simply due to being underwritten). Its a moronic sentiment because if you're a FF fan who's saying "he has baby dumb reasons, he's no ff villain" then I'm guessing you are lying out your teeth. Or only played maybe 2 titles.(note ff7 remake is not included in this character assessment because that game is not ff7s original story nor will its sequels). To look at zenos and try to use the mainline games as a measuring stick is stupid. Its smarter to admit you're (the fans) not into that character type. I have no qualms insulting because I'm right. So now your fallow up is moronic because you somehow forgot the part of your own comment. I didn't say you didn't like zenos. You chose to see that. I criticized the line of reasoning behind not liking him that you presented. Not the line of reasoning to like him. And playing the mimicry game is moronic because it shows you were quicker to get upset than actually read. Which....by the way. Are you saying that opinion was yours? The "he doesn't fit in ff"? Because based on your comment I thought you were associating that opinion with those who don't like him. But if YOURE the one getting insulted. Then you're outwardly confirming your ignorance to the current subject manor(FF). Why are YOU insulted? Is it the fans or you who's the moron for thinking zenos doesn't fit? Or are you insulted on behalf of the fans...( for being called out on willful ignorance mind you)? Are you a series fan who feels insulted? Because at the end of the day that stance still raises eyebrows since the series has had a zenos type before. Did you see "moronic" and just deleted the rest of the comment in your head? Don't waste my time with mimicry if all you're going to do is make it seem like you don't even know what was and wasn't written. (For anyone speed reading like a moron, yes there are ff villains with complex motivation. ff12s my favorite and its villains is extremely complex. I simply said the series is no stranger to straight forward villains with simple motivation.) So ya. I was insulting idiots and their idiot logic. Not you when I first replied. Obviously that changed, I'm not sorry
I was so relieved to have a fun fight where the fate of the city/nation/continent/alliance/world/universe/all life wasn't in the balance. Plus in a meta sense he totally called out my love of trials. Had to give my buddy the first option.

@@YouWillBeHappyOrElse FF14 should be a dating sim ngl - would love to see some of that. Also loved the fight... I hope that there will be more stuff like that in the future
The way Zenos ends his speech on "adventurer" sold me on the whole thing. No "Warrior of Light", no "hero", none of that. From the beginning, you were an adventurer, and now that your job is done, that's all you have to be. Climbing mountains to admire the view, not because there's some hidden world up there spitting out walking catastrophes. Defeating giants 3 stories tall because it's a powerful foe guarding magical treasure, not because it's laying waste to a country. So if the reward you desire after saving all of creation is one last brawl with our resident bloodthirsty bastard, so be it. It's not what you have to do, it's what you *want* to do.
I would have appreciated it more if it was an optional battle. I wanted to leave the genocidal maniac stranded at the edge of reality with no fight left to fight. They could have also made the fight really challenging (like a solo ultimate) as a reward for those who enjoy honing their fighting skills as much as Zenos does. It would have also made sense storywise after Alisae told him off. I imagine he could have realized he cant just force you to give him what he wants, so instead of being a one-way influence on the world, he instead allows you to influence him. He leaves it up to you to choose whether he fights or not. But instead in the msq he forces you to fight him regardless of what you want. You "chose" to fight him, nearly die (despite it being an easy fight), make Alisae cry, and she calls you an idiot. Roll credits? Idk I found that ending really unsatisfying.
@@Zadamanim highly disagree, he is still a psychopath after all and that's all he wants in life. Alisae telling him off ain't gonna change the psychopaths mind. Plus it kinda does give you a choice, even if it is just story wise as the warrior of light and not the player. Like someone else said, he knows you better than anyone. He understand that at heart WOL is an adventurer that seeks the thrill as well. That scene got me so hype tho I swear. Just like the scene in stormblood where you go treasure hunting with alphi and the other dude, just you as an adventurer with no world saving obligations, just you and the thrill of adrenaline in your vains.
@@ditchfood8047 I dont think it would have been a change of heart but more like a change of plans. More like he would realize he cant get what he wants if he's forcing you to fight him. He needs you to CHOOSE to fight him. Especially after he confronts you several times and fails so hold your undivided attention. I don't think he would suddenly become a good person, but rather giving you the choice is the only way for him to get what he wants. And he does give you the choice, but there's ludonarrative dissonance when you the player is forced to fight him regardless. I was hoping a yellow quest marker would appear over his head, similar to that one optional quest chain after HW. For most players, they would know at any time they could choose to travel back to edge of reality to take on the ultimate opponent... Looming over their heads and perhaps even inspiring a few casuals to finally look up what a proper rotation looks like, lol. Instead it was a very bog standard duty and honestly easier than Venat.
@@Zadamanim "if you wish to walk away, I will not stop you." He does actually give you a choice as i mentioned. You do have a choice as the WOL but not as the player.
@@ditchfood8047 Yes I agree, I'm saying I wish the player was given that choice. Zeno's story falls flat when it's all building up to him giving you to choice to fight him or not, and then it ends up not being optional. His story feels detatched from the rest of the plot and doesn't end up really going anywhere. Endwalker feels like you could have left Zenos dead and had essentially the same story. Imagine Garlemald was destroyed because the Populares and the Legions got into a fight and ended up spilling black rose in the capitol, Fandaniel made dinner for 1 instead of 2, and before Endsinger, Vrtra bursts in instead of Shinryu Zenos. You can't say the same for other major characters like, if there was no Fandaniel/Hermes then the whole plot would have to change.
Zenos grew on me. I went from going "hell no" to "ya know what.. you earned this one" I often wondered why bring him back in stormblood, but in my most recent playthrough I realized he stopped black rose in shadowbringers. Then endwalker hit and I figured it out, he's been Vegeta all along!

Man. Zenos is one of my favorite characters in XIV. I'm truly sad he's dead. I had kind of hoped he might have become a "Vegeta" guy, in a pink BAD MAN button-up, but being real with myself that probably had more complications than I could ever imagine. (Plus I can write fan fiction anyway) But man, Endwalker took Zenos to a real good level. And as someone who wrote their WoL as starting their adventure because someone else claimed "Adventuring is too hard." and they took that as a challenge, went out and got an axe, jumped into some adventures and fights, and loved the thrill of it all- this hit 100% home for me.
The one thing I am eternally grateful for is that this isn't a duty. It's just a one-on-one battle between you and him, and it couldn't be any better than this.

There really is only one answer here and anyone who does ultimates, savages, extremes, or unreals and doesn’t choose it is literally lying to themselves. Zenos was literally tired of us hitting decline on his WoL (Ultimate) queue.
To say "you do these things for yourself" is a pretty broad statement! The only reason it would be a lie is because everyone does things for selfish reasons, even the WoL, even the scions, and even if it's just to feel better for yourself - even with the most just reason. As for me, I do these things for rewards, not for thrill. So even though I realize his message there, I only feel 50% spoken to. I - and by extention my WoL - did the MSQ, the things with the scions just for herself. So all Zenos does here for me is stating the obvious. :|
I picked the 'I've had enough of you. It ends here' option. EW did about as good as could be done with the character but imo it was still a mistake to bring him back.
Zenos: "You love the taste of battle, and nothing more..." My WoL: " . . . can you just piss off already . . ." Like i just wanna vibe man, but these mf'ers keep wanting and causing apocalypses and calamities, every-time they *blink*
This shit was so cheesy but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I loved every second of it. Kinda cringe they kept Zenos around for so long but it was worth it for this.
Yeah, I picked the third option. Everyone here talks about how great of a rivalry it was, and I would have been on the same page, and then he pulled all that shit in Garlemald. That was a step too far, easily one of my most hated moments of the entire game. After that, I held nothing but fury for Zenos, which is what he wanted, but it didnt make it fun to hate him, I just hated him, and Im glad he's gone.
If I had the dialogue option to leave him to languish alone at the edge of the universe forever unfulfilled, I would. That's what he deserves for setting off the goddamned apocalypse simply so I'd 1v1 him.
If only our rivalry with Xenos was the main focus of EW. All I ever wanted was to be the battle junky that he wanted me to be but I'm not allowed too. They had to do time travel and fuck it up for no reason. All I wanted was to have everything wrapped up nicely but they had to introduce a whole new thing.
while i am not a fan of the time traveling being implanted in stories too. I think they worked it in here in a way that doesn't affect both the continuity and the dialogue.
Yea Endwalkers story kinda ruins everything shadowbringers set up and totally recons years of preestablished lore all for some shocking reveal time travel shenanigans that don't even make sense or work within the expansion itself. Stormblood >>>> Endwalker, that's how bad Endwalker was for me.
It's so fucking weird because I didn't feel my WoL at this point would have fought him. Idk it didn't feel right. It really took me out of the moment. That being said that gurren lagann moment was fucking lit
That is the very reason I was so angry during that scene ! That one fight at the edge of the universe litterally costed all the lives that died during stormblood, at Garlemald and thoses who died during the final days. I would really have prefered to have the choice to bring him to justice. Cause his participation to the final fight was lacking, he just fly for us. That dosent pay for his crimes.
TBH first reply doesn't make sense to me. It works on a meta level as if he's talking to the player himself, but WoL is never characterized like that in the story, and never shown to fight because "they want to fill the void inside", so all the attempts to force the perspective that "WoL is just like Zenos actually" fall flat for me. It's good that there are other options at least. I liked the fight itself, but I can't help but think it was a little bit misplaced in the story. It doesn't tie into the main theme or narrative all that well either.
Think of it like this: he doesn’t ask the warrior of light, he asks the adventurer. He says you, the bloke who left home with a rusty spear in rags to fight greater and greater beasts and tyrants for coin, who explores the world to test yourself on the mightiest prey the world has to offer, for glory, for money, for adventure, for friends, whatever. That’s all of us. We all started as a wanderstruck mercenary seeking to get stronger, to rise higher, to get better gear and better xp, to do the savages and extremes for their own sakes. Before we were heroes we were mercenaries. And sure it may not be to fill the void, maybe it’s just because we find it fine. But the adventurer keeps finding higher and higher heights to soar to, and xenos asks that is not even a small part of that for the sheer joy of getting stronger, of having bigger adventures and more glorious fights? You can deny it sure, especially if you are a healer or scholar. Maybe that was just because you were desperate or lonely. But for adventurers like me, who lived by steel and blood, that couldn’t have been more true. Beneath it all, mine was a knight, a samurai, a lancer, someone who loved the thrill and the rush of blood and kept fighting challenges and going above and beyond because it was setting his heart ablaze. That is why it can work. He could give a flying fuck for hero champion. He wants to fight a fellow warrior, who also loved the clashing of steel. And it’s beautiful to finally give my warrior the ability to act like a warrior, drop the pretentious bullshit and anime hero act, and finally just have a glorious finale because *it would be so rad.* it’s why he got on that cart all those months ago.
Speak for yourself, your character motivations are what you want them to be, the game also have more moments where you can choose what your WoL wants to fight for. And I choose being a murder hobo who thinks rain is an allagan conspirancy.
@@FatalFatalisFtFts Wait wait wait, are you saying rain ISN'T an Allagan conspiracy?! Also yeah, 100% that. Everyone can RP your character the way you want, and a decent chunk of us DO have our character's motivations in line with adventuring and kicking ass. My Roe came to Limsa as a former pirate with nothing left but the clothes on her back, an axe in her hand, and a desire to kick ass and amass a truly staggering fortune by the end of her days. Along the way she has come to realize that there is something thrilling about kicking Primal ass. I can't remember the exact questline, but I remember one stretch of quests where you could choose to talk about dealing with a group's primal and I always picked the options that boiled down to "By the end of today, I WILL have killed a god, one way or another".
This is something not often brought up but Zenos was COMPLETELY RIGHT in that regard. One of the few characteristics of the WoL that are CANON is that he/she loves danger. In one of the short stories Alisaie rants that the WoL's favourite hobby is "cheating death with his adventurer friends" and Y'shtola and Lyse agree with her. We can headcanon many things of our WoL, but being a thrill-seeker is CANON.
I picked option 2, since apparently denying the sociopathic shithead his pathetic little duel for which he was willing to literally let the entire world burn was not given to me as an option. So at least I can put an end to his shenanigans.

He's still the same character overall, but it's like he's become self-aware.
same. during SB he is ok but in SHB the story plot make him like rent free in your head
in EW his placement is much better.
He kind of echoes Venat there and I'm all for it.
Its why my top 3 FF villains are Sephiroth(a creepy manipulator with baby reasoning), Caius Ballad (a dude so sad/angry he chose fuck existence to stop a girl from dying infinitely, and he admits its that simple and selfish), and Zenos (a dude whos only actively part of a war to find someone who can beat them in a fight)
Which is funny, cause Sadu is in this game, and I'm pretty sure her personal motivation is super duper shallow but everyone loves her.
Ahem "people may not like him in FF because he's out of place"
I pointed how How that's stupid because 2 extremely popular ff characters, the most popular in fact, Sephiroth, is basically what zenos is mimicking.
I simply said the series is no stranger to straight forward villains with simple motivation.)

I was so relieved to have a fun fight where the fate of the city/nation/continent/alliance/world/universe/all life wasn't in the balance.
Plus in a meta sense he totally called out my love of trials.
Had to give my buddy the first option.
If you didn't fight him then and there, he would've continued to bother you in one way or the other. So yes, if anything, your person and (private) life was at stake there.

@@YouWillBeHappyOrElse FF14 should be a dating sim ngl - would love to see some of that. Also loved the fight... I hope that there will be more stuff like that in the future
I was satisfied with Endsinger. "One more" was one too many.
I went from going "hell no" to "ya know what.. you earned this one"
I often wondered why bring him back in stormblood, but in my most recent playthrough I realized he stopped black rose in shadowbringers. Then endwalker hit and I figured it out, he's been Vegeta all along!

Facts.

It doesn't tie into the main theme or narrative all that well either.
dont be beta , wer like Zenos , if not , we end with fishing
I pick the same option but only cause I don't see anything in what he saying, stuff like I saw something in him, I'm like um no?
