I was introduced to snooker by my great Uncle, a man whose name I never knew, only his nickname: "ginge" (yes, this was the early 80s before political correctness took over). He was a grumpy man, who was not much loved by the rest of the family, but I liked him and he passed his love of snooker, and talent, onto me. I even ended up working in a snooker centre in the mid 00's for a few years, and developed my game to the point of having ONE 50 break!

That's exactly right! At first I felt like Jimmy White was thinking to himself "God, Why do I have to play with this drunkard, Higgins?". Truth be told, Higgins was typically drunk when he played his best and it is apparent that White was snockered as well. I'm American and I love this video. Me too remember it like it was yesterday the joy of watching your snooker fav win.thay same week my wife was in hospital awaiting the arrival of my son he was born two day latter I remember saying to my wife that same night Alex won pitty you missed watching Alex in the final because he won she sied I had a TV brought into my room so I cauld watch it that same week I went into a sports shop and bought an Adams hand made cue who's name was the signature on it yeah Alex Higgins
This game should be held in the classic archives, i could not take my eyes off it. 30.30 to 33.35 is my favourite part of this whole video, although the whole lot is pure class. Jimmy and alex were brilliant, going by jimbo's eyes he's no had much sleep, alex is a joy to watch and is such a character, and can play very good stuff, the whole set up, mosconi cup, europe trailing 10-8, the bar they have thare with the briliant bar man, great crowd, alex and jimmy straight into the drinks and ciggs, alex with his little dance shuffle, the brilliant mike massey with bobby hunter who were up for a laugh, and were brilliant sportsmen, alex looks in that so innocent mode at times but then just switches on like a light. Sid wadell in the comentary box, man you could not make up a better night of mosconi cup pool. Also the pool was pretty good, the cannons onto the 9 ball lit the place up and the one to finish it off was class. Im writing this in 2021 and this was 26 years ago., im pleased its here to see but also sad that this type of atmosphere with these types of players with a bar thare has been lost. Never see the likes of this again. As the old world slides away and technology takes over. Its why gems like this should be kept and re mastered in archives under the best mosconi cup games ever. Great to watch.
They should bring back the booze and the smokes. There should be a tournament where you have to maintain above a certain ABV to avoid disqualification. Random breathylizer tests. If you fall short you have to take a shot of whiskey

Wee have lost this part of life in sports all round with things having to be all healthy, all professional etc etc. Watching jimmy and alex here is pure class in a glass. The barman doing his thing, get the vodka and coke's lined up, lighting up a smoke, and what wee get are matches and moments like in this video. Don't see it now as things have to be all correct. Bring back the bar in the mosconi cup, but wee don't have the characters to bring out the boozing and smokes, make it classic. Its all lost mate. Such a shame. But i agree with you 100%.

A year after this, a very young "Rocket" beats the "Pearl" for the same cup. I'm an American pool player by heart but I cannot look past the pure brilliance of English snooker pros.
I wish snooker was more popular in America. I'm lucky to have a pool hall near me that happens to have a snooker table. But people don't really know about it here.
Alex Higgins’ the original Jedi master’s shot on 11 mins I think is one of the best one single pool shots you will ever see. Even in 95 he still had the vision and the skill to do that. The modern players are superb now and the general standard is higher but Higgins at his very best would be a match for any of them. Amusingly, he doesn’t even really know the rules of 9 ball he’s on the drink and he is still sublime at times. What Alex Higgins and Jimmy White don’t know about cue sports isn’t worth knowing. Legends.

What isn't really noted on is that Alex is using a borrowed BREAK CUE... so it has a rock solid tip that doesn't really take chalk. Did amazing regardless of it (and not knowing the rules.... and being wasted...). Legend

Once you have mastered snooker to the level jimmy and Alex did then playing pool is a piece of cake, wasn't any doubt in my mind they would win, pockets on a pool table are like dust bins, I've played quite alot of snooker over the years and every time I go pub or pool club I just don't miss! Wow back in the days when they had fun, respected each other, the crowd was respectful, they shot their hearts out, won and lost with dignity and grace and immediately shook each others hands. @@kerrmoney i think the two rail carom was the better shot. Perfectly calculated. People see a ball curve and think its insanely difficult to do and to aim. Once you have the touch for swerves/ masse its the same as any other shot, albeit a slightly lower percentage. That kick carom had no room for error which makes it the better shot, imo.

I've never seen Jimmy White this nervous in all the video and live matches I've seen. You can see how he's genuinely worried, not about losing but about his friend having to live with regrets after missing. Alex was a consumate entertainer. The man just enjoyed his craft to the fullest. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw what he did at the end. Look carefully. He gets his pint topped off and then we walks out of the match with it. As if the man couldn't afford a drink at the next spot they'd go to. So damn smooth. RIP.
It was great watching Alex and Jimmy winning the World Doubles in 1984. I think they beat favourite's Steve Davis and Tony Meo in the semi finals. The 2 people's champions winning together. 1984 was 1 of the best years for Jimmy White. He won the Masters, the World doubles and was just defeated in the final of the World Championship 18-16 to Steve Davis. Jimmy was just 22 and played all out attacking snooker and almost defeated Davis, who had thrashed former world champion and world number 2 Cliff Thoburn the previous year 18-6. It was exciting watching Alex and Jimmy. Alex has 2 world championships, 2 master's and 1 UK Championship. Jimmy has 1 master's, 1 UK and is 10th on the all time ranking titles winner's list, ahead of world champions like Terry Griffith's, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott, Ken Doherty, Cliff Thoburn, Shaun Murphy, Peter Ebdon, Stuart Bingham, plus player's like Mark Allen, Stephen Maguire, Kyren Wilson. Jimmy and Alex are responsible for making snooker the popular game it is now. They almost single handedly between them brought snooker out of working men's clubs and onto television with 17 million viewers watching the black ball final in 1985. It was really exciting watching Alex and Jimmy in the 1980s. They were both box office stars. Jimmy and Alex were like rock stars. They smoked, drank, took drugs and played with flair.

Met Jimmy here in Pattaya Thailand this week! I am an American but well aware of this legend. He's a cool guy and took a selfie with me and my London pal. I saw Mike Massey do an exhibition back in Miami in 1987. As great as all 4 of these players are, it could go either way on any given day. Some really great pool!

Once you have mastered snooker to the level jimmy and Alex did then playing pool is a piece of cake, wasn't any doubt in my mind they would win, pockets on a pool table are like dust bins, I've played quite alot of snooker over the years and every time I go pub or pool club I just don't miss! I wish I had the opportunity to see Alex play live! What a legend! Seen Jimmy a few times one of my all time favourite snooker players! Great video! 👍

Wow back in the days when they had fun, respected each other, the crowd was respectful, they shot their hearts out, won and lost with dignity and grace and immediately shook each others hands. True bunch of classy gentlemen.
Nowadays it's like they all hate each other. Tension through the roof, complete disrespect from the crowd, screaming and yelling, taunting, not shaking your opponents hand immediately after winning, jumping on the table, belittling your opponent after winning. Classless is the best way to describe what the mosconi cup has become.

@@kerrmoney i think the two rail carom was the better shot. Perfectly calculated. People see a ball curve and think its insanely difficult to do and to aim. Once you have the touch for swerves/ masse its the same as any other shot, albeit a slightly lower percentage. That kick carom had no room for error which makes it the better shot, imo.

I've never seen Jimmy White this nervous in all the video and live matches I've seen. You can see how he's genuinely worried, not about losing but about his friend having to live with regrets after missing. Alex was a consumate entertainer. The man just enjoyed his craft to the fullest. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw what he did at the end. Look carefully. He gets his pint topped off and then we walks out of the match with it. As if the man couldn't afford a drink at the next spot they'd go to. So damn smooth. RIP.

It was great watching Alex and Jimmy winning the World Doubles in 1984. I think they beat favourite's Steve Davis and Tony Meo in the semi finals. The 2 people's champions winning together. 1984 was 1 of the best years for Jimmy White. He won the Masters, the World doubles and was just defeated in the final of the World Championship 18-16 to Steve Davis. Jimmy was just 22 and played all out attacking snooker and almost defeated Davis, who had thrashed former world champion and world number 2 Cliff Thoburn the previous year 18-6. It was exciting watching Alex and Jimmy. Alex has 2 world championships, 2 master's and 1 UK Championship. Jimmy has 1 master's, 1 UK and is 10th on the all time ranking titles winner's list, ahead of world champions like Terry Griffith's, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott, Ken Doherty, Cliff Thoburn, Shaun Murphy, Peter Ebdon, Stuart Bingham, plus player's like Mark Allen, Stephen Maguire, Kyren Wilson.
Jimmy and Alex are responsible for making snooker the popular game it is now. They almost single handedly between them brought snooker out of working men's clubs and onto television with 17 million viewers watching the black ball final in 1985.
It was really exciting watching Alex and Jimmy in the 1980s. They were both box office stars. Jimmy and Alex were like rock stars. They smoked, drank, took drugs and played with flair.

Met Jimmy here in Pattaya Thailand this week! I am an American but well aware of this legend. He's a cool guy and took a selfie with me and my London pal. I saw Mike Massey do an exhibition back in Miami in 1987. As great as all 4 of these players are, it could go either way on any given day. Some really great pool!
