  • Holy Week is an annual Christian holiday that commemorates the events of the passion of Jesus Christ, from his entry into Jerusalem until his resurrection. This celebration occurs on variable dates, generally between mid-March and April.
Holy Week in Ferrol is more than four centuries old and has been recognized as of International Tourist Interest since 2014. Its distinctive characteristic lies in the diversity of forms and expressions with which the Passion of Christ is lived and felt. This diversity is the result of the collective contribution of people from different regions of Spain, who settled in Ferrol to work in the shipyards and in the marina.
Throughout the eight days of the religious festival, twenty-five processions take place, especially those that take place on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
The procession of the Holy Burial of Ferrol, which you can see in this video, is celebrated on Good Friday at 7 p.m. and leaves from the San Julian Co-Cathedral, traveling through some of the streets of the beautiful Magdalena neighborhood. Since 1951, the Brotherhood of the Holy Burial has been responsible for representing the funeral of Christ with great solemnity. Starting in 2022, the Brotherhood has resumed the celebration of the Desenclavo ceremony, which has not been held in Ferrol since 1912. This representation, which takes place at 6:00 p.m. in the atrium of the co-cathedral, completes the narrative of the burial of Jesus by the brotherhood.
