The Grey Knights derpiness reminds me of how they fought alongside the Tallarn Desert Raiders against a massive demon incursion. After the Tallarn guardsmen and Grey Knights successfully stopped the incursion, the Grey Knights slaughtered all the remaining Guardsmen because "HURR DURR YOU WITNESSED US AND DEMONS LOL". If you really wanted to keep it secret then why not induct the guardsmen as a support army for the Grey Knights/Ordo Maleus considering they are now probably pretty good at fighting demons. From what I can tell, I think the Grey Knights prefer to try to get the Guardsmen killed in battle. Enough Guardsmen _will_ turn the tide against a Daemonic horde, but leaves a lot of loose ends to deal with, so I think the Grey Knights plan their strategies so that by the end of a major battle or a campaign, _most_ of the cooperating Guardsmen have already been slain, if not _all_ of them. They _deliberately_ plan their campaigns so that any witnesses are likely to die when and where they can be the most useful, meaning that there may only be a dozen Guardsmen left to put down by the end.

I've heard a few stories from city kids who had a little freakout when they went camping for the first time, and if people can live under train tracks and get a full night's sleep living in a baneblade would be fine and could definitely lead to sleep dependence. Just think of it in terms of the kinds of sounds. They wouldn't be random, it would be the same engine, beeps, and servo sounds repeated regularly. That's exactly the kind of stimulus that can become subconscious, it's the same mechanism in your brain that lets you hear when the engine of your car sounds wrong

I am impressed that nobody talks about the grimderp way the Inquisition handled the rightful protest of the Celestial Lions. The Lore paints Space Marines as an extremely rare and powerful resource for any general or admiral in pretty much every theater of war. Like a single company of around 100 Marines tipping the scales of entire sector spanning wars. So nobody in his or her right mind would go around and make it their life goal to wipe out an entire chapter of highly loyal Marines, especially in a war like the one for Armageddon. "Ork Snipers" are a meme for a reason. When the Celestial Lions left Armageddon with less then 95 Marines, without any Apothecaries, all Gene Seed of their fallen brothers lost and damned to rebuild their strength for generations before becoming a fraction of the force they once were, the Inquisition had to kick them further by denying them the means to create Primaris Marines, denying them reinforcements, when their homeworld was destroyed by a warband of Chaos Space Marines and send out a Callidus assassin to kill their Chapter Master. At one point in that story the Inquisition could have left it as a message send loud and clear, but they had to go even further out of pure spite. That nobody in said Inquisition tried to intervene in that kind of destruction of allied forces, or any other authority of the empire for that matter, is also highly grimderp.

    • @MrFallenone

Another big Grimderp moment was what happened in the story, "Death of Integrity". To give context, Archmagos Plosk meets an AI from the DAOT about 15,000 years before the current setting of Warhammer. In that story, the AI tells the Archmagos how the ship warp traveled in time thousands of years into the future. The crew saw the future of the galaxy, that it will slowly be consumed by chaos. When the captain went to the nearest planet to warn humanity, he and his crew were called heretics and brutally tortured to death.
The Grimderpness in this situation is the length that the Imperium goes whenever they hear about stuff from the DAOT. Yet, when people from the that very timeline, with working technology to back up their claims, come to your doorstep to warn you, no one, not even an Inquisitor, someone from the Mechanicus, or a Noble decided to do a thorough investigation on their claims. Not even the threats involving chaos, which anyone in a position of power that is loyal to the Imperium would take seriously. They just simply label them heretics just to show how much humans have fallen from their prime.

    • @vothbetilia4862
      @vothbetilia4862 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First off it's the DAOT, an event where events like the the men of iron eventually occurred and humanity became superstitious about a.i, and those who don't worship the emperor must die. It's not that hard to understand, while they did saw the future, the inquisitor wouldn't be able to find any evidence to see If their even telling the truth to begin with. It's like if someone told me the big bang will happen next month, there's no literal evidence to back it up. So why should I believe some random crazy person.

They are put in the Sarcophagus because it rapidly ages them to adulthood and grows all of their organs except for the Black Carapace. Dante goes from small, malnourished, lightly mutated boy to sexy Neophyte in just a few months, same for his friends that made it. The whole conceit of "Grey Knights have to kill loyalists when they see them" was a lame attempt to justify why the Grey Knights would fight certain factions in spite of being incorruptible. So, having written himself into a corner, Matt Ward decided that the best way to reconcile it would be to make the Grey Knights incredibly stupid... y'know, instead of just... not resolving it at all. Grey Knights infighting other Imperial armies with your buddies around a gaming table (and various other lore-breaking encounters, like Tyranids and Necrons, or Sisters of Battle and Tau) is one of those things probably best written off by the MST3K mantra, rather than trying to justify it in universe... poorly.
For a similarly-themed palette cleanser, there used to be a section in the old 3.5th "Daemonhunters" codex that was devoted to the reasons that Grey Knights would fight that faction. And the Chaos entry read something to the effect of "...seriously?" That was admittedly pretty funny.

I get that inovation is extremely limited, and that some technologies are limited to certain forge worlds, since admechs are assholes and want to keep the best things for themselves, but c'mon. Like you are telling me that imperium lost the technology to built different rounds for autocannons, but still can built gellar fields, warp drives, plasma and grav weaponry and far more? I see how they could lose some kind of hardcore tech, but often its just something that could be easily reinvented back from other, still available, pieces of technology (which is something that admechs do a lot). Another example of this is that one kind of warship, thats so big that nobody knows how to build it anymore, but admechs will then proceed to build literal moons and space ports surrounding whole planets

Even travelling in-between planets can take years. That much grimdark, is just too much. It makes the setting unloveable and psychotic. Aka there are transport ships, small ships with 10-100 people. Those too have a tortured psycher? And the small to big ferry ships transporting food and resources? It's very close to grimdirt.

I've heard it said that the ships use humans because their "cheaper", but when you need to feed them 2,000-2,500 calories a day, plus a couple of litres of water, as well as air, sleeping quarters, ect. they end up becoming quiet expensive in cost, logistics and combat effectiveness.

I would say the penitent engine and mortifiers, I get the idea for harsh punishments for cowardice can lend into the grimdark but these vehicles just sound like they were written by edgy 13 year olds who main Dark Eldar, what a lot of GW writers need to understand torture needs to be grounded in reality and be actually believable in order to have an impact on the reader. Just read any Joe Abercrombie torture scene and compare that to 40k grimderp.

Space Marine recruitment is the thing that gets me the most. There's nothing wrong with some risky and even life-threatening training when the end result is a walking demigod, but the specific rituals involved are sometimes just stupid. It's one thing to have a test of endurance so difficult some people happen to die trying. It's another thing entirely to pick up a large pool of the planet's best and most promising youth, only to drop them into a meat grinder of deadly trials and risky surgeries. If they weren't so wasteful and saw the deaths of recruits as unfortunate yet sometimes unavoidable, rather than an intended feature to filter out the chaff, it would look much less stupid.

I love the grey knights and blood angels but the trials are sometimes just stupid, like you sacrifice millions of potential soldiers just to get 1 superhuman soldier who "MIGHT" just get one shot by a powerful enemy leader anyway. Think they could lower that number abit or give a good reason why so many people have to die like it gives the Grey knights some kind of power boost as they watch their friends die or something....not just like lul many peple die, dis darkkk

I worked at a loud ass steel mill for years, driving cranes. Constant machinery, always on, always very loud. Ever since then, I can't handle complete silence, it sounds 'wrong'. I have to have a fan on at all times, even while I sleep. I will toss and turn for hours if I don't have background noise while attempting to sleep. So I can understand how a Baneblade occupant might need that background noise, too.
All your other Grimderp moments were spot on, though.

With the whole militarium and their tanks, people who have done long stints in prison have a REALLY hard time adjusting to a normal bedroom.
Friend of a friend came out after 15 years and literally needed a guard to stand by his bedroom door just so he could sleep.
Hated silence, needed background noise, couldnt take him anywhere as he was always like “what’s he doing? Where’s he going? Shits about to go down better get out” at a dominos pizza shop…

There is a very old 40k story A border Prince read. A planetary governor discovered an ancient primarch bolt pistol on his planet and it immediately became a very valuable religious artifact. The problem was that he thought the pistol was used by Guiliman but it was actually a pistol used by Horus. This somehow made the pistol a demonic artifact so what did the inquisition do about it? Insted of using one of many spys and secret agents they have to steal and replace the pistol, an inquisitor convinced a space marine chapter to do a suprise attack on the planets capital. The suprise attack destroyed all the capitals defences and also killed all the high ranking people in the capital who were luerd into a trap. This included tech pristis and memebers of the ecclesiarchy

2:48 Wholeheartedly agree. The Revenant legion was very grimdark. A bunch of depressed super soldiers feeling no worth in life, and that depression getting inherited through eating their own and recovering experience. But due to the inherited depression, marines are more prone to charge into battle and seek death. Making a vicious circle. Yet, they kept fighting, as they had to upkeep their legion, and their progress.
Compared to this, being the sons of Sanguinius, and living by his code, trying to be good enough for him, but doing that with Aspirants? Just doesn't seem right.
