I've designed, sewn and tailored trousers for many years and while it is true it's polite to avoid a guy's shaft while measuring an inside leg, the question's origins come from a time that basically only knew boxer shorts as underwear for men. When measuring a man now, I ask first about his underwear preferences and if he wears boxers I'll follow up by asking which side he dresses on most often. Why? Because there ABSOLUTELY is and always has been an added "ease" to that trouser leg and rise. Doing so eliminates obvious bulges.

Factor missing from this discussion; circumcision. Depending on how you were cut (if you are), you may have enough, or not enough room for your shaft to grow. If you were tightly cut, this could influence the direction in which your shaft hangs, because things tend to grow towards the path of least resistance. It could influence how your shaft hangs, and points during erection. How do you like that theory?

Pfft. Unlike a plebeian I switch mine from left to right depending on the day's activities. If I'm going to say, shake Chris Hemsworth's hand with my right hand, I keep it tucked left so as not to make him jealous. If I'm getting into the old Rolls, I keep it tucked right because I always enter with my left leg first. I also think that the 5th theory is correct, but mine conclusion also includes the 1st and 2nd theory. I used to go commando (Used too wear no underwear) and wear baggy pants/shorts, so I hung downward, then I had too wear underwear for my P.T.P. (Physical Training Program) so my "family jules" wouldn't be flopping around. I started wearing briefs, I have a average penis size (around 5.5 inches) so I had too shove it too one side, and the left was the most comfortable because my left testical is smaller than my right. Eventually my penis started hanging too the left.

I hang to the right. I’m right handed. Adjusting is constant. Great open info men should know. I freaked out the first time I had slacks made for me. No one ever told me of this.
Good theories, but I think that theory two could be expanded upon: You're more likely to keep more things in your dominant hand pocket- keys, lighter, cell phone, etc. By dressing down the non dominant leg, it allows for more room on the dominant side, especially when wearing trousers with smaller pockets such as jeans.
Agree with #5. The penis will slightly curve in the direction you tuck. True story, back in the day (my late 20's) in an attempt to make my penis more noticeable in pants I changed my tuck from the left to the right and never changed back. Within a year or so my hang direction was naturally to the right and 20 years later it is still to the right. Due to my endowment it is definitely seen regardless of the tuck. This is something I didn't realize way back when I changed tuck direction, and though I was average in size.....

I hang to the left which I noticed since highschool. I was alarmed since it might be some sort of irregularity. What I did was that since then, I always tuck it to the right side whenever I wear jeans, boxers etc. Looking 10 years later, it made noticeable and significant improvement. Just to give a rough estimation using a clock, mine was deviated to around between 8-9 o'clock at highschool and now its at 11 o'clock. So, in those 5 theories I'd say that (Theory 1- wow I just noticed that it does indeed hang lower than the right) (Theory 2 - I disagree with this since I've been tucking it on the right since highschool) (Theory 3 - This one is a good one and I actually buy it.) (Theory 4 - I disagree with this, I'm somewhat ambidextrous, most of the time I write with my left hand but I can also write in my right. BUT I definitely feel more comfortable having my phone at my left pocket and my keys and coins at the right pocket.) (Theory 5 - THIS! I tucked it on the side opposite of the deviation since highschool which is approximately 10-11 years ago and it made improvements on my thingy). To sum things up I buy theory 1,3,5 and for the record I have a 5.1" penis.

Well, at home I usually change the position depending on how I'm sitting, or laying. When I'm outside, I have actually thought of which side I hang, but I do believe I hang to the left mostly because of how I sit and position myself as a right handed man. Still, I guess changing sides has brought me more to the straight category, but it still hangs to the left most of the time.

I would think it hangs to the left most of the time because most men are right handed. At an early age we start dressing ourselves for school and usually that means jeans or other types of trousers. The tailors have the waist button on the right side and the button hole on the left. As the left arm is the strength arm of right handers, we hold our pants up with our left hand and using our skill hand (right) we fasten the button. The same process is used before this step, we pull our trousers or jeans up, are left hand is holding the left side of the waist band, we slide our right down and tuck the junk to the left and then pull up the zipper with the right hand and go for the waist button. After a few years of this, the lenis develops a slight curve to the left because that is how it is trained to ride all days in pants. Also, men mostly sleep on the left side and the penis will lay across the left thigh furthering that trend.

I had always thought it was in relation to the side you sleep on. I sleep on my left side and assumed gravity was a factor as to the reason mine hangs left. For the stats, I'm right handed.
Theory 2 sounds the most plausible, and I definitely switch around depending on what I'm doing. Being more active or passive dictates a lot of the direction I hang. I'm definitely in the 2% margin with my green eyes and above average traits.

I always thought it was theory 5 because if you were to primarily use your right hand to guide your penis while urinating and for putting it away afterwards, it would most likely be pushed to the left instead of the right. Working it to sit on the same side as the arm you are using for his motion would be less intuitive.

I remember being asked which side do I "lob to." The tailors professional association probably voted for the more modern, discrete, polite, or family-friendly "dress on."
Very easy answer to a mundane question. It has everything to do with whether you are a lefty or a righty. If you are righty you hang to the left because your lead leg is also the right leg so that when you walk your penis will not strike your thigh and vice versa. The question with more substance is why does a tailor need to know this answer because clothes are intended to be 100% symmetrical.

I am right handed, keep keys and change in right pocket and i hang right. When I started growing in 7th grade it just found it's way to the right and still does. Plus I drive a stick shift and things feel better to me on the right. That way I only have to deal with one gear shifter needing to be moved!
I think theory one and five both are pretty feasible, one testicle will always hang lower than the other, making it so that when you sit down it won't get squished against the other, this can possibly lead, thanks to tight underwear, to the penis sliding to the side where there is more space (the side with the lower testicle), and as muscle has memory it starts to stay that way... I personally am a right hanger, pretty interesting topic btw. Men's sexuality isn't really covered to the extent it's made out to be.
Btw I also heard some time, although this might be inaccurate, that just like which hemisphere of your brain works the most determines whether you are left handed or right handed, the penis is also inclined lean to a side based on that factor. I really need to thank you because I am a transgender men and try my best to have my pants look natural but I never understood how and your video helped me a lot!

I believe it is a culmination of both the first, the second, and a little more science. Due to the left testicle hanging lower in 65% of men, it would, in fact, leave a little more room; therefore men might be more inclined to position their shaft to the left. The other 35%-ish (due to some men hanging equally) would naturally fall into positioning to the right, or straight down as to allow more room.
Now for some science. Men need to keep a well-regulated temperature otherwise it kills the sperm. Testicles hang lower or higher as a way to create less heat from friction. Over time the muscles and skin will automatically take on the position that you most commonly set it towards. For example, your forehead has wrinkles, because the muscles in your face move the same way, and wrinkle the skin in the same way over and over, until a noticeable pattern is detectable.
Now due to gravity pulling ever so slightly more on the left testicle, it will pull the skin at the base of the left side of the shaft ever so slightly more down (this is not due to the position of the left testicle, it is due to there being more skin and therefore weight on the left side). That, with the constant positioning to the left, will create a common lean towards that side.
Another variable is what hand is dominant, as that will actually affect how the muscles are pulled. During "super happy fun time," a right-handed person will be pulling the shaft slightly to the left (which puts the strain on the right) and stimulates the right testicle. The average person is right handed, and that will cause a slightly less firm left, which therefore makes it easier to lay on the left side.

Mens' cycling shorts have no pouches. Never once seen them nor been asked about them. If there's ONE perfect example of heat, pressure, rubbing, chafing and sweating, it's cycling. I can't imagine there's anything that comes close. (Motorcycles and horseback riding might be close, but not really.)

Sometimes it hangs at 3 inches, sometimes it hangs at 4, and when I'm doing a hard workout or running it shrivels up to provably closer to 2 inches. But regardless of what it hangs as, it swells up to a bit past 6" when it comes down to business.
