2005 Acura TSX | How To Change Oil & Oil Filter

  • It's annoying to wait over an hour for a shop to do an oil change, so do it yourself if you have the space to do it. Here's my video on doing an oil change on the first generation Acura TSX. Information in this video is helpful for beginners. I did not address it in the video, but my interval for changing my oil is 6k miles or every 6 months (whichever comes first). I noticed that if I let my car sit overnight and drain the oil in the morning (without turning on the car) I get more oil out of the engine.

    Check engine oil level hot or cold? The manual says to run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and then turn off the engine, wait about 5 mins, and then check your oil level using the dipstick.
    Reset Service Oil Light for the Acura TSX.
    Insert key, but do not turn it. Press and hold the TRIP/RESET button and turn key in ignition to (II) - do not start the engine. Continue to hold the TRIP/RESET button for 10 seconds until light resets. Turn the ignition off and then start the engine to verify the indicator has been reset.

    Mobil 1, Costco oil, Walmart oil, Amazon oil all come from Warren Distribution in Omaha. For the first 30,000 miles in my '05 TSX I used AmsOil. I moved from FL to WA and started using Mobil 1. Costco came out with their oil costing $2.25 a quart in five quart jugs (two years ago). I'm using that now. My TSX still runs like a champ! It's all about the donut specs on the jug.

      You're right about Costco, Walmart, and Amazon oil coming from Warren Distribution. But I have not found any information that Mobil 1 is coming from Warren. Here's the list: engineoil.api.org/Directory/EolcsResultsDetail?accountId=-1&companyId=10297

      Awesome! I just finished changing my oil right now. I'm using Amazon Basics synthetic high mileage oil for the first time. I hope it runs just as good as Mobil 1

      It should be a great product. The high mileage synthetic is approved by a few oil certifications (dexose1 gen2, SN plus, and GF5).

    I usually dump all 5qt in to the engine and it just reach at the top dot, I never had problem and I hate saving little bit of oil that left over. Btw I do it because my tsx burn a little bit of oil but I done this trick on all the k series motor I work on . Great video!

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the feedback! I don't mind saving a little bit of oil, but I also find that my car now takes the full five quarts. I think my TSX is also burning a little bit of oil in between changes. I'm going to adjust my valves this weekend, hopefully it helps it run smoother.

    • @kenxu346
      @kenxu346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miguel Chavez make sure u did a video!! I found your tutorial is good!! Especially tsx videos are so rare ! As far as oil burning I use marvel mystery oil and take out the plugs and pour little bit into each cylinder and let it soak over night and check the next day if it leak down to the crank case, if not I'll just siphon it out and out everything back and it does help my oil burning issue. I only burn a qt between 5000 miles interval.

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, TSX videos are rare because they are (entry-class) luxury cars and most ppl that buy luxury cars usually don't work on their own cars. I follow EricTheCarGuy on youtube because he was a former dealership mechanic and knows a lot about Hondas and Acuras. I made a playlist of TSX maintenance and repair videos. th-cam.com/play/PL_M3MF1auKitsDzB3hIeEfiU27FApR-0t.html

      Glad to be able to help out. I know that Amazon recently released their own synthetic oil and I have been using it since January this year. But I have to be honest that the car idles a lil rough sometimes. I am going to switch back to Mobil 1 soon and if the rough idling is gone then I will revert back to Mobil 1.

      Here's a video regarding the air filter by someone else. I recommend using a socket with extension to read the bolts. The bolts have a Phillips type head but that doesn't do a good job of tightening or loosening. th-cam.com/video/zWOgOWhNN80/w-d-xo.html

    Sorry a bit of a naive question but do you empty the used oil containers at Autozone and take them back with you? or do you drop them off and have to buy new ones everytime?
    What happened to me is I reused the jugs of the new oil and filled them with the used oil but neglected to take them to Autozone and they eventually leaked oil. Not sure why they leaked but they actually did which was weird...

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put the used oil in some oil containers that I bought at Walmart. Each container fits about 10 quarts of oil. I have never had an issue taking oil to an Auto Zone with those containers. I make sure the containers are sealed and not leaking. I wipe off any oil from the top. The staff will take the containers to the back and empty them in a barrel and give them back to me. I've had the same containers two containers for about 5 years now. With regards to the new empty oil bottles, I throw them away in the trash. I sometimes keep a bottle with a little bit of used oil and brush it on the underside of my mower before I mow the lawn. It makes cleaning the underside of the mower easier.

    Oil filter is in the most annoying spot on this TSX. Unless you have a lift it's no big deal.

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the oil filter replacement is incredibly annoying. I have aftermarket exhaust headers so the heat shield is removed and its a 4-2-1 piping setup so that gives me a little more clearance. I remember one of the first times I replaced the oil filter, the oil dripped down my arm and into my arm pit, haha. To minimize the oil that comes out of the oil filter, I leave the car sitting overnight and change my oil in the morning. The longer the car sits the less oil youll have coming out of there.

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are Motegi MR131 TRAKLITE. I bought them from TireRack for about $150 each, but I think Walmart.com has them for a lil cheaper. I chose these wheels because I wanted some wheels that are lighter than the OEM wheels (to help subtly with performance). These weigh about 18 lbs each. The stylish wheels are generally heavier and are more for looks than performance. To go lighter than 18 lbs I'd have to pay about $100 more each wheel. The Enkei RPF1 wheels are my dream wheels but I couldn't justify the price.

    My bolt is tsking forever to unscrew, is that normal?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it unscrews and you're able to drain the oil I wouldn't worry about it. But if you can't remove it to drain your oil, then you got a serious problem. A few years back I wanted to replace my drain bolt and found an aftermarket shiny one at AutoZone. The thread was much longer than the OEM bolt and thus took longer to remove and didn't feel right so I went back to using the OEM drain bolt. I don't recommend aftermarket drain bolts, besides, a new OEM drain bolt will cost about $3. Aftermarket parts don't last as long and don't perform as good as OEM parts.

    Took the full 5 quarts but only calls for 4-4.4 with filter change, too much oil like that can blow out your seals.

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point about overfilling. So what's your take on why the engine took the 5 quarts and yet marked within specs on the dipstick?

    U forgot about resetting the oil Life?

    • @ChavezDIY
      @ChavezDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to include that instruction when I made the video, but It's in the description. I'll still add a pinned comment with those instructions. I don't go by that maintenance light so I just turn it off when it comes on. I keep track using a basic spreadsheet on google drive. In fact, everything I do to my car is stored in that spreadsheet.
