But there's a big difference in the two.
Whatever you do though, listen to ALL of it or NONE of it.
Because it's all an important part of Ian's story.
This was Ian's idea to share this.
He doesn't want anyone else linked to it, blamed for it or held responsible for it.
It's all HIS story.
It's very courageous to own this stuff.
If you want to drop negative comments or a perspective based on what you perceive his story is without having your own story that relates to it...don't.
The take out from all of this is that regardless of your postcode, your demographic or your financial, family or emotional position...everyone has a story to tell and many people have a broken road that leads us to where we are now.
I'm grateful to Ian for telling me his story.
It's helped me understand many things that I'd previously assumed or taken for granted.
Some of it I wish I didn't relate to, but all of it I'm grateful he shared.
This is what taking stock looks like.
Bravely and publicly owning your life and accepting what has shaped, continues to shape or what you no longer allow to shape who you are today.

Cant believe this interview, one of my favourite all time racers. I never saw ian as arrogant or rude, i saw him as the steve waugh of sprint car racing, cool under pressure. This interview uncovers the man that is Ian Madsen. What a great person and i hope i get to shake his hand one day.
Wade your interview technique is exceptional.

Best of luck on your new you ! I used to say that I was raised by my alcoholic Mother but in reality I knew I had to raise myself and fortunately did ! Having graduated from High School at 18 I became aware that I was an adult and going to separate myself from my mother's enigma so to speak and joined the USAF and became my new life manager. We(my mother and I) did become friends later on in life and she had become sober, but never completely! I understand your journey and wish you all the best on your Journey !!!
Very good interview Wade. I have been involved with recovery for over 40 years now. My Dad drank and was able to get sober in 1981, when I was 13. He was active in The Fellowship up until he passed in 2021. He was a miracle, as he always said, thanks to God and AA. It not only saved his life, it save mine and my mother's as well.
The way Ian talks about western Sydney is the same way we eastsiders talk about the east side of Des Moines. Lee Township against the world. I hope he gets a ride if he wants one. Great interview Wade!

Thanks for being so open and I hope it helps others that are going through the same deal. Its unfortunate that alcohol is such a big part of so many cultures.

Top work to both you guys, very raw but very factual as well, I only hope that it reaches those that need this same guidance. Thank you Ian for the great racing that has been part of that was my love for sprintcar racing , reaching back to my supermod days in SW of WA too many years ago now.. I met Ian Briefly once at a LUCKY pub in St Marys i was having a beer with Joe his dad strangely or not i dont recal him having one but i will say his Dad never stopped talking about him after he left . Glad to see hes goin good.😊
