This is way better than the other video about this, I have a simple shower faucet like this and when my well pipes froze last year it got a bunch of dirt in the lines to everything and the shower was the only one I did not know how to clean.
I have replaced several of these Moen cartridges over the past 20 years. NOT ONE of them has ever come apart as easily as shown here. I have always had to use a puller to get the cartridge out. They include a plastic device to help remove the cartridge with the kit but it's worthless. There is a puller for a Moen cartridge that you can buy from a plumbing supply which is what I have used. Fair disclosure: I am NOT a plumber just a DIYer.
Yeah they can be I little hard but not to hard maybe a bit more than the videos most of the times actually easier that’s it. This is the advantage of moen if the cartridge fails or gets damaged you can just replace it and if you have your old one you can just swap for new one
Thank you, I changed my moen valve in my condo, does have the hot and cold shut of valves. I totally missed the grease part. But since I barely have hot water in my shower. Something is wrong and will need to go back. Glad I found your vid🙏🏼
I think many of us would like to see how to replace a two handle tub faucet and the spigot as well. Such as when wanting to upgrade to a new look for the handles and spigot. Thanks for another great video!
These videos are good, but very basic and don't take into consideration the real life experiences. Move into an older subdivision (20+ years old) and the plumbing fixtures are usually the cheapest made and are the most difficult to disassemble. These types of jobs are not a 1 hour fix. They usually require a few trips to the hardware store for special tools to remove parts or fixtures because corrosion, rust, time and improper installation all are factors.
Tell me about it! Helped a friend thinking it’s like mines but nope! Once open its old so required more and the more you attempt to fix the more you have to replace. 😂 So it’s never a repair when old home, it becomes a whole new replacement/ retrofitting.
"Amen" to that! How about a 50+ year-old apartment complex. I'm not talking a building on the National Trust for Historic Preservation Registry either. 🤣 Wish it were -- the situation would be much better!
How did you make out Sumpter? I have this very same issue in my shower. I get lots of cold water but my hot water is basically nothing. I had a plumber do my other shower because it had the same issue but I think they replaced the whole copper housing and not just the cartridge. I have really hard water so lime and calcium have likely built up.
From all the hours of watching ATOH, the one thing I'm better informed about than anything else is shower valves... shame that here in the UK our valves are usually a bit different.
Good to know information for us DIYers Richard. I have done that it my 25 yr old home in both of bathrooms. (Surprised you didn't check the valve housing pipes for clogs with a hanger before installing the new valve.). How often should we drain our water heater tank and replace the rod (that attracts the hard water deposits as shown in another video?
But what were the symptoms. What was the original problem. Was the hot or cold water not working? Was I the water coming out of both the showers and the faucet? Or not coming out from one or the other. It seems the video shows a fix without showing what the original problem was.
replace one recently in a house not really difficult but dont lose that clip and most importantly dont forget to put it on or you will have full water pressure shoot out everywhere and flood your home
I also had the exact same question. After re-watching and donning my glasses perhaps the main issue was that when the lever was shut off there is still water dripping out when it shouldn't? And then it leads to the idea that "oh shoot, there's water dripping when closed and that's bad" perhaps? At this current time I have either the same (though not the gold colour, yuck!) or similar Moen Shower Faucet where I am worried because when I use the shower head and either I turn off the main faucet lever the shower redirect lever on the tub faucet does not automatically come down like my newer Moen faucet like it used to. I'm thinking it could be my cartridge since I'm guessing it has never been replaced since my condo home's initial construction from 2004. My Moen faucet also drips water for a little bit of time after using like the video's description. Oh well more research needs to be conducted for me! At least there is one solution to my issue, hopefully you don't have to replace your own Moen Cartridge too soon!
Any thoughts on this: 6 year old (so new-ish) shower only system. Valve and Moen cartridge as in the video. No tub spout connection as shower only, so this is plugged on the four way valve. New cartridge - check. Hot water coming in to valve - check. Cold water coming in to valve - check. Shower head checked for clog - check. Shower head connecting "pipe" that attaches to wall and shower head, disassembled and checked for clogs - check. Finally took wall off to expose plumbing. Disconnected pec pipe at top of four-way valve to check for visible blockage, etc. - check. I cannot however see whatever space is created in the valve when the handle is turned on (to initiate water supply), for the water to go UP. I have not played with a disconnected valve however and don't know how the water makes it's way up - only what I can see now I've yanked the pec pipe off and it just looks like metal down there with no spacing. So the last thing I have tried is to turn on the cold water supply again, a little, then turn the shower faucet inside the shower to the cold and on position and looked at the valve, remembering the pipe to lead to the shower head is disconnected. Nothing. I was hoping to be sprayed with water. So. Why do I have no water leaving this valve to travel up to the shower head??? Thank you for any suggestions. This is getting ridiculous lol!
I guess they don't monitor comments. Would have been nice to receive some sort of a clue, from the professionals, as to what was going on with your situation. Hope it has been fixed.
I actually have a situation where no water at all is coming out of the tub faucet. Neither the hot or cold water. Not even a drip. All the water is fine for the kitchen and bathroom sinks, also the toilet. All of those are okay. Could this be my issue, needing to replace this part?
Some advice please. The shower water flow starts off strong and then reduces to a trickle after about a minute. This is a recent development as it used to work fine. I removed the shower head and tested the water flow straight from the pipe and the same thing happens. Is this a cartridge problem or do you think it may be something else?
Hi. My wife and I have been having trouble with hot water in our apartment. We have hot water in our kitchen, but nothing but cold water coming out of our bathroom sink and our tub when we turn the hot water all the way on and leave the cold water off. Our landlord refuses to hire a licensed plumber and either looks at it themselves or send a maintenance person (none of which are licensed plumbers) to look at it. All they do is go to the boiler room in the building and look at the boiler. They come back with: the pilot light was out and we relit it, there was condensation on he boiler so we put insulation on the pipes, no one else has complained about the hot water but you. We never had a problem until this new management company took over. All I know is we have now been without hot water for a week now and are getting the run around. If we were a week late with our rent, we would be out on the street. We tried to hire a plumber ourselves; however, they won’t come out because we don’t own the property. Our landlord will not let us hire a plumber on our own, nor will they to resolve this problem. Does anyone have an idea as to what is causing us to have no hot water in our bathroom ? Unfortunately, we cannot afford to move somewhere else or we would. Thank you.
Hello there. I am a licensed plumber and hvac tech. It could be a couple things. First, if water comes out, but not hot, it could be a mixing issue. If the building has a mixing valve in mechanical room it could clog with rust debris and only allow cold water to hot side of fixtures. I'd also ask if neighbors are having same problems. If not, I've seen where a single handle faucet can cross connect and cause water to be cold or tempered. I've seen toilets fill with warm water because of this issue. If all else fails, contact your city building department and ask for help. It is unacceptable to have no hot water for sanitary reasons. Depending on where you live, it may be a health code violation.
Go to your local Residential tenancy Branch in your country or you go on their website and put in a complaint to them and hopefully it will be resolved. It might take some time. You cannot live without hot water
My problem is that when I turn the shower nob to hot I hear a water hammer sound and water shuts off immediately. This only happens when I try to use hot water in the shower. Cold water is always ok. I already replaced the cartridge numerous times all brand new but still the same problem. Do you have any advice or videos to solve this problem?
Need a "special" tool ($$$) that is called a cartridge puller. Moen makes one. Don't know if it works on other single lever (single control) shower/bathtub fixtures (Delta? American Standard?). Wouldn't surprise me if you have to buy one specific to the manufacturer of your fixture.
yes, Moen supplies a little plastic dislodging tool with the new cartridge. I like these because after you pull it you can easily pull out the cartridge innards by pushing the stem to the back end and clean it out too.
OK this old house I have watched everybody you have on shower heads on the cartridges inside on leaks on anything to do with single and double shower Manifold. So I put the question to you because 3 plumbers Could not figure it out. Why do I still have a leak in the bathtub from the faucet head not the showerhead After replacing the cartridge ? It the cartridhead has been replaced 3 times by 3 different plumbers. Who all say they have no idea why it's leaking. By the way moen agrees they have no idea why it's leaking. They even sent me a new one directly. Before I install it do you have any ideas? Perhaps this is something you would like to tackle for yourself. I am quite the repair person you can ask my husband And after reviewing over a 100 videos and reading different plumbing infornation I am no better aware as to what's causing this even after 3 yrs. Do you have any info or are you up to come in looking get it?
@jordanas3750 Ain't it grand talking to oneself! You'll never get a response from This Old House. Sorry for your situation, but could be mineral deposits elsewhere in the plumbing.
@karenholley8356 That's not what I wrote. I copy everything I write. TH-cam changed it. After I save this, it changed it too I had to go back and rewrite it. Sorry my question was about the manifold and how the cartridges I have all leak 3 off them. I was wondering if there is a option no one's related to me. Sorry again for youtube and will try and change it back.
He is obviously not a plumber any plumber would have known there was not going to be a shut off what alone when you could shut off behind the plate. Maybe I should remake the video a actual plumber telling you how to plumb

Was the clogged shower valve also preventing hot water from coming out of the faucet (and into the tub) for those who take tub baths?
Just throwing this question out there. Don't think there's an ice cube's chance in hell that I'll ever get a response.
Just throwing this question -- out there -- but don't anticipate any response, as per usual.
What were the symptoms that brought Richard to fix the valve? Was just the hot water flow diminished or were both hot and cold water flow diminished?

@@mikeybmx5330 Very good of your to respond. Thank you.
Are the cartridges universal?
Not all shower valves include a retainer clip. I had to search further because my shower had a different type.
In that case you may need to take your problem directly to a plumbing supply store, rather than the usual Lowe's or Home Depot Box Store.
Would replacing this fix a leaking shower head as well?
