In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Inai by Japanese Math Rockers with a progressive tinge: Tricot. The album is いない or Not Present (my English translation).
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

This is a darker sound than their usual which marks a new direction for them. They do tend to change the tempo a lot and I really love how much the guitar tone changes. I started listening to them after they joined with a studio, but they used to be an indie band before they got a fulltime drummer and I think their sound has definitely benefitted from having a producer.

    I love Tricot.
I recommend songs that are more like a math rock.

Wow! That was cool! The jump from the bluesy bit to the really jazzy bit followed by the punch-to-the-face hard rock bit grabs, no?! Niiiiice! Thanks Dean!

When I really need my head bent, Tricot is a good bet. Yes, you are right, the Japanese bands don't give a shit about our genre definitions. I believe this is one reason (in addition to an overflow of virtuosity) that they are so fascinating and dynamic.

@@deanwolfechannel I find the song "On the boom" (boom ni notte) to be very interesting to analyze, but if you want a more math rock-y tune I suggest Bakuretsu panie-san.

This song makes you tripping to another feeling, but when the chorus comes, makes you happy. The reason japan music so unique, because the market there so healthy. Please check out "Sokoninaru - Vermisst" New song by them, very prog
