Thank you so much for requesting tricot to the requester and obviously thanks to Ryan for reacting to them. I didn't like them too much when I first heard them, but they have been one of my favourite Japanese bands after they clicked with me a little over a year ago to the point that they are probably the Japanese band I have listened to the most the last year. Unfortunately they don't have a lot of reactions to their music and I have seen reactors that didn't click with them (which I get), but I absolutely love what they do. Discovering them even pushed me to check out more Japanese bands that are more to the math rock and post-rock genres and even more some shoegazing or pop rock stuff that I otherwise probably never would have checked out (including tone spoon actually).
I would say their albums are relatively cohesive as far as math rock/alternative rock goes (they apparently don't like the math rock label for their music) although they have calmer songs among their relatively crazy technical ones, but their newer albums have a little more pop maybe compared to the early albums. That said, it's still pretty complex, いない comes off of their 2021 album and while it's more poppy it's also very technical an complex with unusual time signatures. My favourite albums are their very first album (2013), their 3rd (2017, where this track is from) and their 4th (2020), so while they certainly changed over time, I would say they still sound like tricot. They released 4 albums in the last 3 years as well (2 in 2020 and 1 in 2021 and 2022), so they are still very much active.
Audiotree has also done a live set for them on their channel of 5 tracks that I absolutely love. It's basically them live in studio when they were in the US years ago and I love every track of it. They have a full set and separate videos for each track.

Thanks for reviewing Tricot! I really hope they get more international exposure. Maybe they're just a little to math-y or alt-y or something for most people's tastes. There music might not span the same emotional spectrum of other rock bands, but their creativity is off the charts, and I love virtually everything they do.

Hey, thanks for checking them out. I think they are a very interesting band and maybe deserve more exposure. In this song I find very interesting that they explore their funkier side, it's a refreshing departure.

My first time hearing this band, thanks Ryan. Ikkyu’s voice reminds me a bit of Remi from Glim Spanky. Can’t believe they’ve been around since 2010 and I haven’t listened to them. That’s gonna change! 😊
There seems to be no end to the Japanese music rabbit hole.

When I listen to tricot, I always keep an ear out for something that’s more complex than it has to be. Sometimes it’s obvious, other songs it’s subtle, but it’s always there.

Super excellent musicians in this band. They're all awesome. Ikkyu (Vocals, guitar) also plays with a progressive pop band called Genie High (they also did a song together with Aina the End from BiSH) you should check them out.

Yes, I enjoy Genie High as well although I prefer their earlier stuff over their newer stuff. It's funny because it comes right after Gacharic Spin's latest (it's in alphabetical order) and I am always confused when the first track of Genie High's first EP starts thinking it's Gacharic Spin for a couple of seconds (it has a surprising amount of rock in it). Their newer stuff is way more poppy, but I still enjoy it. Ikkyu also has a somewhat hidden project called Susu (好芻), which is a weird mellow style of pop that I don't know enough about to give it a name but I do like and bassist Hirohiro has a solo side project called "Fennel" which is alternative rock maybe like a calmer version of early tricot.

It is just a matter of get used to odd time signatures, then it is not chaotic just on a different measure
