Can't find a RASPBERRY PI to run HOME ASSISTANT? Try this $35 THIN CLIENT instead!

  • Having a hard time finding a Raspberry Pi in stock? Need something with enough power for Home Assistant and some addons? Check out this used Thin Client for $35 (SHIPPED!), and the process to get a Home Assistant image up and running on it. Home Assistant doesn't include an installer, so we have to creatively image the internal SSD by first booting to a live Linux image.
    There is no corresponding blog post, but you may find my thin client selection blog to be useful:
    www.apalrd.net/posts/2022/wys...
    My Discord server:
    / discord
    If you find my content useful and would like to support me, feel free to here: ko-fi.com/apalrd
    Before you choose your thin client, be sure to check the model and specs, as well as what's included. Things to watch out for:
    * Does it have a power adapter?
    * Is the solid state drive included, and is it big enough for Home Assistant?
    * Does it have a halfway decent processor?
    I selected a Dell WYSE 5060 since it was the cheapest available with the power adapter and an SSD included at the time. It's on par performance-wise with a few year old budget laptop, featuring a quad core AMD embedded processor, 4G of RAM, and 16G SSD in this configuration. Not great by modern gaming desktop standards, but definitely better than even a good Pi. I wouldn't want to run Windows on it, but Home Assistant is much easier on the system requirements.

    Dell Wyse 5060 (my favorite) - ebay.us/HDNfVY
    Dell Wyse 3040 (less powerful, smaller) - ebay.us/bRjuLg
    The 3040 is adequate to run HA and Z-wave/Zigbee, but not more demanding addons like Frigate. It's very small and has very low power consumption, so it's a good choice for a basic HA setup. For some guidance on BIOS configuration of the 3040, see this other video of mine: • Dell Wyse 3040 Thin Cl...

    Great tutorial. Worked flawlessly on a HP T520. Just for giggles, this method can be used too by installing Home Assistant on a Proxmox host as a VM. While other methods exist, this one was actually the laziest and easiest way to do. I created a UEFI type VM, but without the EFI partition and I used an IDE type OS disk and Intel E1000 NIC...

    Honestly, i can’t understand why they don’t make an image for android smartphones or tv boxes. Everybody has at least one or two laying around without any purpose in life and surely they have enough power to run home assistant.

    • @QrchackOfficial
      @QrchackOfficial ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Surely they also have locked bootloaders and proprietary firmware/driver blobs which may or may not work with a custom build that has a different version of kernel, libraries, etc. They also often involve guesswork because "open source" Android for most manufacturers of Android smartphones means "if you send us a formal letter, we'll agree to send you a copy of our code after we're headlining major news outlets - but no word about how to get it running, or which one of the 4000 options you need to set to get it to compile". It's a freaking mess, and without access to the exact smartphone you want to use, pretty much impossible to support.

    I've been looking for a Raspberry PI for a year until I stumbled on this alternative. I couldn't find any Wyse 5060's available but was able to successfully install on an HP T620. The bios screens were different, but easy enough to figure out. The unit I received had no OS so I did have to go into the bios setup AFTER installing HomeAssistant on the SSD to enable boot to it. My Dell thin client had 4Gb and ran out of memory trying to flash HA to the SSD. I took out the SSD, connected to my main machine via a USB adapter, and flashed the same file to the SSD from Windows 11. When I added the SSD back to the small Dell it started perfectly. The only snag was when I restored a backup onto the new install at the login page. It came up with an "cannot Fetch" error and the web interface crashed. Restart? All fine. The restore had worked after all. Cheers for this tutorial. A great help!

      Are you having issues when you reboot Win11 or the VM within Virtualbox? In general, Virtualbox isn't great at hardware passthrough, either using hyper-V (if your version of Windows supports it) or going to dedicated hardware (Pi or mini PC) will be an improvement. Hardware will also use less power than a Windows PC if you turn the PC off when you aren't using it.

      I bought a Dell Wyse 3040 without a power brick and it's been a pain to work with, mostly because the UEFI has some issues and the power connector is something I couldn't find. I'm going to try HA on it after I'm done testing it with xubuntu, but I ended up removing the power jack and soldering on a USB lead since it needs 5V power.
      Other than that and the (much better built but almost always more expensive) 5060, I haven't tried any. They all have quirks.

I am using a older mini PC and the BIOS is dated 2008 but it does show the UEFI (or what ever). Any ideas? I looked for a decent 35.00 thin client quad core but they seem to not exist anymore for that price.

    • @apalrdsadventures
      @apalrdsadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's that old it's possible that it either doesn't support UEFI boot or you have to selct the boot mode between legacy and UEFI in the BIOS menu. If it doesn't support UEFI at all then I believe you're out of luck.
      The quad core I have is overkill for Home Assistant unless you're running Frigate or similar, so going down to something like a Dell Wyse 3040 is perfectly functional.

    Hey, have a 5020 and already running HASSIO. Quick question. Do you know whether the mPCIe can be used for a Coral or is it locked down for the HP wifi card? (read somewhere) Know if the 5060's is? Appreciate watching your video even after I've done it. Will check my bios settings for the auto power. Good pickup and terrific use / recycling of such a machine instead of buying new for HA. Keep up the top content!

    • @apalrdsadventures
      @apalrdsadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the exact model.
      They only electrically connect the signals they need for the WiFi card they are shipping with that family. An M.2 Wifi slot (E key) can have up to 2x PCIe (two single lane buses, not a dual lane bus), USB 2, SDIO, I2C, UART, etc. Some of the HP WiFi cards use SDIO, so PCIe devices don't work since the slot is only wired for SDIO. Most slots also only wire one PCIe bus instead of both, so only one of the two TPUs on the E key dual coral will work anyway (this goes for a lot of motherboards, not just the used thin clients).
      On the 5020/Dx0Q, reading online (I don't have one) it looks like it has mini PCIe instead of M.2, so it wouldn't fit a Coral anyway. It's a slightly wider connector with two mounting screws instead of one.
      On the 5060 it has M.2 and should have a single PCIe bus available (out of two possible), so the coral E key would work with one of the two TPUs functioning. On the 3040 it has SDIO, so no coral there. USB3 is always an option if you can find one in stock.

    Thanks. How does the power consumption of the thin client compare to say a RPi 4?

    • @apalrdsadventures
      @apalrdsadventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the model. The newest two I have are the 3040 and 5060, both are quite power efficient, the 3040 is definitely in the ballpark of the Pi 4 in terms of power usage (the stock wall brick is 15W and I've run it on 10W power adapters). the 5060 is a bit higher, I've measured it as high as 35W under high load, but it also has a better CPU and GPU, a real SSD, etc.

      If the ha> command pops up that should mean it booted and there's nothing more to do locally. If it didn't show the web link, it's possible Ethernet isn't connected or it's not getting an IP over DHCP?

      Is it a 5060 or something else? I saw that once on a 2G RAM system, but that system did work on the second try. I'd guess that at some point there just isn't enough RAM to keep the entire OS and also part of the HA download in memory. Part of the reason to use xubuntu instead of ubuntu.

      HA OS for x64 comes as a .img, which is a full disk image of what needs to be on the boot drive. It will automatically expand to fit the entire drive the first time it boots. There is no installer, the disk image is already setup.
      So, you need a way to copy that img onto the boot drive directly.
      In my case, I'm booting a live Linux installer and using that to image the disk in-place, but if you can take the boot disk out you could image it in another computer (using something like raspberry pi imager or balena etcher). This method should work (although a few comments have suggested newer versions of balena etcher don't work as well for this).

      @@apalrdsadventures Yes, this seem's to be the problem. I couldn't find any BIOS-option to activate booting from the internal M.2 port. So I ordered an external USB to M.2 S-ATA housing and will place the existing 512 GB M.2 S-ATA in this housing and plug it into one of the two existing USB 3.0 ports.
