@@JoePierceMaker if you're using spring steel, I've got a tip. Car shops pay people to take away scrap steel, often by the pound. If you are nice about it, they'll often give it away. I got about thirty busted leaf springs from the shop near me. They're worthless to a mechanic, but their great for guys like us.
@@JoePierceMaker another place to check is a machinist shop, they often have odds and ends pieces they can't use and will sell cheap. And if you're real nice they may even cut some holes or indentations for you. A friend of mine got a swage block that way, only cost him around $2 a pound.
Thanks! (I know this reply is super late, but youtube has this new thing where it shows me comments I haven't responded to and I'm making up for lost time!)
Thank you! The device is a honing guide, which you can use to sharpen plane blades and chisels. You can get one on Amazon fairly cheap, here's a link amzn.to/2zZqsVI

after hardening you need to put it in your oven /or toaster oven at 400*and draw the temper for and hour or so , so your blade wont be brittle..
Thanks for the tip. I actually did do that I just didn't want to drag the camera up to the kitchen. haha
Thanks for entering #TOOLMake17. Good start...off to see part two
Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Thanks!
You are one clever beaver!!!! You just saved me a WHOLE lotta time!!!! BOSS!!!! :):):):)
Thanks Aaron! Glad I could help
Thank you, blade looks great. going to try a similar build with an old lawn mower blade.
Anthony Massey Thanks. I’d be interested to see how that turns out.
@joe pierce maker where can I buy that steel for the blades?
I found this piece on Etsy. I just searched for 1065 Carbon Steel.
Where did you get the steel and what kind of steel did you use?
vmitchinson Bramley Custom Knives on Etsy. It’s 5160 high carbon steel.
That would have been good information to open with. Good video otherwise.

Thanks for the tip. I'm in the process of building a small forge so I'll need some steel to play with.

I prefer to build with Stodoys plans.
