i wasted my past 28 years, doing nothing interesting to me. now im so wasted and i can't even tell what is my passion is or what are the things that I am good at (even i don't know if i am good at my job since i get fired/ refused so many times) ! i spent two weeks sat to the PC taking personality and passion tests, watching tutorials on how to get a life or even how to be liked by the people around me! i feel like i really need guidance from an expert, because i am so afraid to spend my entire life doing such mistakes (actually doing nothing), I am like i lost my direction in life specially after i lost my job and my girlfriend in the same day and i went into this dark tunnel. So if you're reading this comment and still young , PLEASE don't waste your golden years being shy, introverted, perfectionist , or without having hobbies.

Ehab Awni My condolences for what's happened to you. I really hope you find who you are and things get better for you soon. But what's the problem with being an introvert? It's a part of who I am. I enjoy being alone and seldomly speaking.

It doesn't matter how old you are to find a new passion. Don't beat yourself up. I hope you found a job. Also people are weird, and usually you will not know for sure if they like you or not. Work on liking yourself. Some will like you and some will not, and that is normal. Do yoga💖It will bring you happiness and inner peace. Then you can go from there. I just realized I recommend yoga to everyone. That must be my passion😍😍😍Well good luck.

I understand you, because I am also lost. I graduated in civil engineering and I have difficulty on that. Finding once passion is not easy, my passion is all about arts, adventure, martial arts and free lancing which is I own my time. Keep it up, you will find your place too.

It sounds like you are a burning museum and everyone is running in to take a free masterpiece.
Take charge and start delegating who takes what (of your paycheck) and where it goes.
Bar the doorway of your finances and refuse entrance to those you are not ready to pay at that time. Pay a little to keep them happy, but do not let their loud demands empty your coffers.
Set up a budget for yourself, leaving enough money for you, that will allow you to enjoy life (just not as extravagant as before) while paying off your most pressing obligations.
Start searching for other activities to enjoy that require a little less funding.
Do not limit your pleasures, but explore those that cost a bit less.
Kind of talking to myself here. I am sure you've already considered all of what I suggested, but I needed to hear it again myself.
My money has always had a desire to go exploring other peoples lives way too often. I have had to convince it that I have a better plan. We get along much better now.

Passion is an overused term that usually freezes people instead of helping them find what they want to do. Truth is only a very small percentage of people follow passion as a career. I love writing music, it's my passion. But I also love my job, which is a paramedic. I didn't become one by figuring out my passion. I was curious in medicine, which led me to curiosity in emergency medicine, which led to some clear job choices. If you follow your curiosities it will lead you to some practical career choices that you can still enjoy. Don't think life has to be some Hollywood movie where you quit everything, move, follow your "passion", and become rich and famous.

Very well said :) I completely agree. This channel is just like all the other self-help books/ seminars etc. Ironically, I'm goin to quote the father self-help, Dale Carnegie:"arise is someone a deep want and then charge them for it". This channel doesn't exactly charge its viewers, although still gets paid (like any other youtube channel). Getting paid to fill our heads with white mice. lol

    • @thecaptainseye

+DMT I don't get how that's bad... He isn't even creating a need out of nowhere... He is actually finds a pre-existing need and makes a profit out of it. Viewers get some help and he is paid by an external source...
Why is self-help more "shameful" than having a shrink? Everyone has their own insecurities you can't pretend like they don't exist because they don't want to label themselves with something that's not even as embarrassing as we make it out to be.

I agree. I have been beating myself up trying to figure out what my "passion" for a career is and have not been able to figure it out. I have a passion for film and music but I don't want to pursue either as a career. I have always been very curious about medicine/science, though. It doesn't give me the exciting feeling I get when watching films or listening to my favorite songs but I do find it interesting.

If you want to love what you do, abandon the passion mindset ("what can the world offer me?") and instead adopt the craftsman mindset ("what can I offer the world?")
    - Cal Newport, So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

    • @bigol9223
      @bigol9223 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

using "Trump" in a positive sense automatically dismisses any point you make.

    • @sealot1
      @sealot1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

+Pickpocket I feel it is worth pointing out that when Cal says this, it is not because he means you should not follow your passion, but that "follow your passion" does not help. passion is an adverb. You can do something passionately. There are careers and workplaces that are wrong for you, but not only 1 that is right. There are several possible places that fit. "passion" comes not from specific vocations necessarily, but form conditions within these vocations, such as a feeling of impact and autonomy. Also, worth looking up "career capital" to get a closer look at what he's talking about in the book.

    1. What makes you lose track of time?
    -Anything i'm good at doing
    2. What do you spend money to do?
    -Anything i'm good at doing
    3. Where do you fear judgment?
    -Anything i'm good at doing
    4. What makes your heart race?
    -Anything i'm good at doing.
Which as you might imagine presents a problem. If you hinge your ego on doing something well the odds are you'll fail. A room full of musicans were asked how well they preformed at a time when it was really important for them to do well and the answer was almost universally "poorly".
I'm pretty good at writing, at some videogames, i enjoy social interaction but that's mostly because i like to find out how other people work, what drives and motivates them and how they operate... Like i said though, i'm really only invested for as long as i'm doing something well, the rest of the time it's just rage and frustration and angst because i'm not living up to my potential.

3 was a really interesting question and one that i wasnt expecting. It definitely opened up a lot of thoughts for me. I have hobbies and interests and am really passionate about a number of things but i never really share or tell anyone else, it's much more a case that i will ask what the other person is into and talk about that. I think (especially when it comes to relationships) this chameleon-like behaviour is holding me back and perhaps opening that up and allowing myself to be judged will enhance my character and who i am as a person rather than always remaining a bit of an unknown. Nice vid!

      @Charismaoncommand  8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

+Loftus There can be a lot of times where we feel compelled to blend in for fear of sticking out. The irony is that if we did decide to stop blending in, we'd attract more of the people that are truly interested in who we are

I agree. Often when I am on a vernissage and I am talking to some people there, they say 'I am an artist' and they don't sound convincing by saying it. When I ask them what kind of art they are doing, they start to stutter and they don't seem to have any passion for what they are doing. I loose interest right away. I don't want to say I expect everybody to be a successful artist, but I expect some passion about what people do.

Hey Charlie - I think your questions are great for finding one's passions but unfortunately I still can't find the answer to what I'll do professionally. I've always been really good at foreign languages, I dance ballet and play the violin for hobbies and just recently I found myself interested in pursueing a career in medicine. I also secretly dream of becoming a writer. I generally love acquiring knowledge about cultures/religion/science (in particular neuroscience). While medicine would be the 'safe' path, the long studies to become a doctor and the shifts in hospitals don't excite me. Then again, being a writer isn't safe at all and I haven't even written much yet (I did win a creative writing contest in Italian for students this year though). I feel like my interests are vast and I could theoretically succeed in anything but that's just the problem, I'm not sure what I want. I'd appreciate any tips and thanks for the great video!

  • @wolf25633

Doesn't seem to work with awkward/weird kids.
    Here are my Answers:
    1. Writing, Philosophy (the walking around in circles talking to ones self, while breaking down what a philosoph said or Theme/Idea), Dreaming (about all the idealistic shit you dream of as a kid, etc..), Playing, Friends.
    2. meeting friends (bus ticket, beer), video games
    3. my ability to communicate/holding a conversation, Anime & Manga (though I talk about it anyway), Writing (though I do read out loud anyway as I was part of a writing club)
    4. meeting a crush.
One should think I know what my passion is, yet there is none. I am driftwood.

Do those things more often! I feel that will help you make connections and open more doors. Also, try new things! You won't know what you love unless you give it a chance. My biggest passion in life is Hockey. When I was younger I had a predetermined idea of what hockey was and 'I knew' it wasn't for me, even though I didn't want to give it a chance. Today I contribute to forums, research stats, watch multiple games every day, and play twice a week. But I would have never gotten into it if my Dad didn't force me to watch a game on TV with him. It's crazy how opening a door can lead to the discovery of a piece of who you are. I'm no expert but I hope this helped :)

Great video! I took a half hour to think about this. I'll share what I have so far, then I gotta get ready to go to work.
    1. What makes you lose track of time?
    - Working on a song in my studio
    - Pacing my house deep in thought about a variety of subjects
    - Decorating my house
    - Copy and paste helmet and sports logo graphics on word documents
    - Creating teams, especially uniforms, on Madden or NCAA Football
    - Looking at Google maps and street view
    - Watching a variety of different You Tube videos
    2. What do you spend money to do?
    - Cable/Internet, to stay up to date with favorite sports teams and celebrities
    - Go to concerts and sporting events
    - Add to my sports and music memorabilia collection
    - Decorate my house
    - Learn new skills, such as singing lessons, recording music, and dating
    3. Where do you fear judgment?
    - Lack of social life, especially dating
    - My music, I don't work with other musicians
    - I don't know enough about dating, music, sports, maps, graphic design, etc.
    4. What makes your heart race?
    - Talking to or being around women I find attractive
    - Talking in front of a group
    - Simple 30 challenges
    - Performing my music
    - Watching a favorite sports team succeed

Well, you don't have to "find your passion". Not a single person on this planet is limited to be passionate only about some particular things. We are passionate about something particular, but if that thing didn't exist, we would simply be passionate about something else. Passion doesn't come from it's subject, it comes from the person. Also, success brings far more passion, than passion brings succes. Even if you are not looking for practicall success in that thing, but you are after that excitement, just look at something that people around you are not ussually that good at, but something you could potentionally excell at.

    1. Creating games (coding, designing maps, creating interesting characters and intriguing stories, creating your own world etc.), Watching videos on TH-cam, Parties, Seeing magnificent landscapes, A deep conversation with a friend.
    2. Concerts, Parties, Pubs/clubs, Festivals, Clothes/furniture/things that look nice aesthetically.
    3. Singing/playing the piano, The music I listen to, My clothes, Writing, Movies/Shows I watch.
    4. Creative problem-solving, Performing/presenting/public speaking, Creative inspiration from a book/movie/show to make my own stuff, Improving myself, Setting Goals, Accomplishments, Groups of people cooperating on a creative team project, The excitement before a vacation/travel, Seeing new things, Listening to music, Improvising/solving problems in the moment, Goofing around with a big group of friends.
    The commonalities I found were:
    1. Inspiring others/presenting/feeling important/doing something meaningful
    2. Cooperation/companionship.
    3. Creative and practical problem-solving.
    4. New/change/creating.

Gathering information,? Interesting! Write a book literally write it down in papers and search for publisher, start a yt channel may take like 2 years to reach good amount, and stock market trading gather information of what companies to invest on , or make a band just get up and gather some people whom u trust and upload good music videos on TH-cam man don't get this silly, watch breaking Bad and money heist the protagonists are middle aged men who literally amazing in their philosophy and work remember colonel sanders started in his 60s u have a LOT of time get the fck up and start man, world never gives a sht always stay motivated and never procrastinate.

Being a very shy and awkward person, I just don't know how to improve when it comes to social interactions, which is one of the more prominent subjects where I fear judgement. +Ernest Wolf Explore as much as possible. Say yes to random opportunities, including traveling, meetups (meetup.com), and random invitations. Though I personally am not a huge fan because my relationships with videogames is 100% addictive, I might also explore the videogame front. If you have something to offer other than simply playing (commentary, reviews, story analysis) throw up a video on TH-cam or Twitch. Odds are it won't become a profession, but it will get you in the habit of creating rather than simply consuming.

I turn on my music and dance for hours 11 pm to 2-3 am xD I also like to sing/write songs and take pictures. I have dance videos if anyone wants to check them out 😊 and does being critical of your talents mean you found your passions...? it means I care, right?

I really loved how you defined passion in simple, straight forward terms to help me identify mine. I used to think it was about how knowledgeable you were on something & how much time you devote to it daily.

The answers to all 4 are "nothing" which is my actual struggle.
I don't ever "lose track of time" over activities.
I don't spend money.... On anything I don't have to.
I don't give a crap about what people think... about me or my life (might be my age).
My heart doesn't race over anything, unless I am doing cardio.....

Another great video, this is the most difficult and perhaps most important question you ask yourself when you yourself even don't know what you want to do in your life
