All his work is so incredible; this is probably my favourite song ever, it’s heartbreaking and comforting and haunting, such beautiful melodies. He was just a straight genius.
I'd be like, "What the hell are you doing talking through his set? It's Elliott Smith! He's great!" I had that feeling like, “Someday you idiots will shut up and listen to him.” I remember telling him, "People won't shut up, it's making me so angry." And he's like, "I like it better this way. It makes me less self-conscious."
rb919 that's cool, and so understandable. It's kind of frustrating seeing someone who was so proficient and genius-like in terms of music, think like me. There was only one Elliott Smith in this world and he shall be missed :(
dude, i know exactly what you mean. I don't even care if he stops in the middle of a song, because compared to ANY artist these days, they have NOTHING on him. He was the greatest song writer of our generation, and one of the most talented musicians as well. I miss this guy, I pray that I'll be able to meet him in some other realm, the best I can do is try to learn to play the songs, and appreciate the music.
LOU BARLOW [frontman, Sebadoh]: He opened solo for Sebadoh in ‘96, and it was at a time when no one really knew about him. We were at our peak at that point, and people just talked right through his set. It would make me really angry.
Thanks for your considerate and thought provoking message. There are two avenues to suicide: 1. Depression and too much to bear. 2. Misunderstanding, that is not fitting in to the world either one is too intelligent or is not accepted, I am the latter...
is it just me or can you see elliott playing on the streets of feudal japan for a ball of rice? his disipline is fuckin outrageous!!!!! its like hes like a fuckin ghost just a haunted soul that should have lived thousands of years ago
hey come on no people, no need for oregon and portland hating. elliott lived here a long time, if you've been here you can really feel the city in his music (or a least i can), no need to hate, i love his music, you love his music, we all love his music, we're not the best place in the world, but i like it here, and so did elliott apparently so put the argument to rest.
Sure, drop D tuning works. Unless you're already down a full step in standard tuning, which is how Elliott usually played (and how I always play my acoustic). I'm not sure if he's tuned down here (don't have perfect pitch or a guitar handy), but it looks like he's stretching across 5 frets to me. In any case, your point is well taken. :)
I always call it Home To Oblivion. But I think that's wrong. I mean, these days people (artists/bands) just name the song after the most used line or most repeated word in the song itself. But a title represents a summary of what the song is about. I think No Name #1 through 4 were just chapters of his story in Roman Candle, and he couldn't come with a good title for any of them. Though No Name is a perfect title. Like most writers, I'm sure he thought of titles after he wrote the songs. RIP ES
Drunk people man! You don’t think that’s not going to be suspected? It’s not a concert. Sounds like a dive bar maybe? A place where people are not expected to remain silent. He was awesome though. I would have nothing to say except, “this guys music is amazing”.
this song is pretty hard to play and have it sound right. I hate how you can barely hear Elliott over all those people talking. they need to shut the hell up
i found a youtube video that had a simplified version of this song that used mostly bar chords, it was taken down though, would anyone have tabs for that version?
This song is F*&^%$#@! amazing. Yeah I said it, freaking, what!! This is guy is from Oregon, where the best people on the earth are coming/from. Period
Eh. For beginners (especially those of us cursed with small-ish hands) I think it's a little tough with the pinky stretch across 5 frets. Of course, learning this song helped a lot with my finger flexibility and control. :)
Can you link somewhere where i can find the chords and a strumming? I'm trying to learn this song and it's frustratingly difficult to find anything at all.
you just to learn elliott technic... saperate the thumb from the other fingures and learn to strum with them very important to always know where is your fingures while stumming i\v never learn guitar... i learned just by wachin' elliott really he's like a guru *sorry for my bad english*
The worst part is, he didn't stop. Elliott never played BIG NOTHING!!!!!!!!, probably 'cause this asshat was screaming it at him all night. I wish people would have let Elliott play what he wanted rather than being incredibly rude and obnoxious.
Ok he may n ot even be from oregon but you get my point that it is the best state in the ENTIRE US, specefically Eugene which is where I live and am from and I aint no slouch...much Love to everyone but don't move to Oregon, it rains to much...for me, and everyone I know
The most important song Elliot Smith song that no one realizes is so. This or Rose Parade (of cou......) Dude shouting “BIG NOTHING”-is obviously an obnoxious drunk and of course none of us have never been so obnoxious under the incorrect dosage of spirits before right? Ok, maybe I have 😆
Committing suicide is not a cowardice act babebarrell...it is the most bravest thing anyone can do. The world becomes so painful and there is no one there. I am 35, have a masters degree in scottish history and political philosophy and am also tried in this world. However I am too scared...
Now you're saying someone is living inside me? Before you get all bent out of shape, I know what you're trying to say. I just don't care. People like you believe I'm doomed to suffer pain beyond comprehension because I don't opt to simplify the power behind the creation of such an absolutely perfect chemical concoction of biotic and abiotic things.
He didn't commit suicide to show his political or philosophical prowess or anything like that: as far as I know, suicide is a somewhat irrational and spontaneous act; though one may dwell on it for some time, it takes a spark (not the love kind) to get the process going...if you can de-humanize it so much as to call it a "process"...
@shadrussell I didn't say that OR TYPE THAT. i know that GOD created all creatures and planets, and lives inside all of us. Jesus Christ died to pay the debt for all of us. GOD loves all of us constantly and i will always know this.I extremely recommend you ask GOD for forgiveness and to guid your life.
Seriously underrated song from an immensely underrated album
All his work is so incredible; this is probably my favourite song ever, it’s heartbreaking and comforting and haunting, such beautiful melodies. He was just a straight genius.
Definitely my favorite song from my favorite album
Totally agree. It’s this album I always find myself listening to. So so good
Can't imagine talking while this beautiful song is being played live
Elliott preferred people talk when he played ya know
All those people talking in the background. Bastards. I could die happy if I saw him play just once.
Maybe you'll discover the next artist of his caliber in some lowly concert... keep your eyes peeled
They deserve a beating!
They weren’t aware they were in the presence of the greatest songwriter and musician of their generation.
@@AC-zo3mmno one will ever compare to him, i promise you that
he wanted them to talk because of elliots anxiety
i love it when elliott mucks up a chord or forgets a lyric. as strange as that sounds.
It's comforting how chill he is about it
I was REALLY lucky (or smart) to see him in the mid-90's. One of my all time favorite musicians.
Sigh.
I think both! By the way, I love the Heisengberg Logo your using. I'm about to finish that show.
how was it, how was the crowd, and were there people crying? sorry, I just came across his music and want to know what kind of crowds he brought in
Obviously lucky
Only Elliott can mess up his own songs and I can't even feel the need to complain about it.
I'd be like, "What the hell are you doing talking through his set? It's Elliott Smith! He's great!" hey man i hope all is well, elliot is truly something magnificent isnt he
his variation of the bridge is so slick
totally agree, beautifula
My favorite Elliott smith song
That's a very good favorite song choice my friend
So, come on night 🌘
Same. Same.

Read similar stories about Nick Drake opening for Yes, crowd couldn't appreciate his subtlety
elliott makes the guitar cry
while the crowd talks over him
I love his face, his smile during this concert. I really think that is my favorite. That day he was sweeter than ever!
Which concert was it I want to look it up
@@snowydove6510Atlanta, 1998-02-05 :)
one of my favorite elliott song
this rules
everyone is gone
...home to oblivion...ace lyrics love it to death.
thank you so much for uploading this i love this song so much
love this live his voice is so smooth!
totally agree, stfu when a legend is playing his most legendary song
the crowd gets quieter as the song goes on
I wish you were there then!
I might not have lost hope for humanity so quickly if people were quiet when Elliott Smith played.
If you listen close you can hear the audience singing along, there's a little speck of hope for humanity there
when i saw him you could hear a pin drop between songs
As it should have been.
Thanks for your considerate and thought provoking message. There are two avenues to suicide: 1. Depression and too much to bear. 2. Misunderstanding, that is not fitting in to the world either one is too intelligent or is not accepted, I am the latter...
a fucking genius composer and Beatles die-hard, what more could anyone *really* ask for?
is it just me or can you see elliott playing on the streets of feudal japan for a ball of rice? his disipline is fuckin outrageous!!!!! its like hes like a fuckin ghost just a haunted soul that should have lived thousands of years ago
That's like somebody blocking the sun while Van Gogh's trying to paint.
heheh elliott messing up and smiling makes me smile :)
Don't go down that road. There are others out there like you who feel misunderstood; you'll find them some day, and you will understand each other.
Such a genuis gone far too soon it would've been an honour to see him live
just imagine the genius' that get talked over every single day
ohhhh, tuned a whole step down capo 2!!! eureka.
mark1800 so standard?
Love you man... rest easy 💔
R.I.P
we didnt talk at la zona rosa in austin
The studio version is on 'Roman Candle'.
Elliott smith makes me cry

Maybe my fave Elliott song
The harmonic substitutions are sooooo tasty
god the talking in the back
It's in the Good Will Hunting soundtrack.

Sounds like a great song that the audience is partying through.

Why not just see it as a piece of music rather than something requiring a name.

I have no idea of the actual day but the beanie he is wearing here was commonly worn by him in 98. That might help narrow it down
