NJ Devils Trading For Yaroslav Askarov and/or Rutger McGroarty?

  • New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald has had a busy Summer to this point. He finally acquired a legitimate goaltender in Jacob Markstrom and has made the 2024-25 NJ Devils HEAVIER, EDGIER, MORE VIOLENT!
Some fans have expressed disappointment that Fitz failed to land a Top 6 forward.
Some fans have expressed disappointment that our "goaltenders are old", and have questioned who the future guy is.
In a recent Sportsnet article, Ryan Dixon talks about 2 names that appear to be on the trade market.
Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov of the Nashville Predators and forward Rutger McGroarty of the Winnipeg Jets.
Both of these guys are highly rated prospects looking to play in the NHL.
Could Askarov be the Devils goaltender of the future?
Could McGroarty fill a hole in the Devils Top 6?
I discuss all of this and more in this video.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

If the Preds part with Askarov it is not going to be cheap, which is the problem, everyone seems to want him real bad but nobody wants to pay what it takes to get a franchise, potentially future league-leading goalie for him, Preds are also cap crunched so it would likely need to be a top tier prospect or two

Unless your name's Cale Makar, there aren't too many under 6-foot defensemen playing for let alone playing a starring role for a Stanley Cup-winning team. And I doubt very much Seamus Casey is going to turn into Cale Makar.
You can have smaller skilled forwards but they better be paired with plenty of bigger players on the bottom six and on the back end, that's the trend. We should try to sell high on Casey, even better if he has a big season in Utica.

Ace i know you’re younger than us Devils fans who were there or remember that ‘95 Cup winning team lol but we had a very slow team the following season and losing Claude Lemieux to the Avalanche whom he helped win the Cup that season didn’t help either and guys like Neidermayer were still young were still learning and struggled and had so many guys injured and in and out of the lineup but yet we barely missed the playoffs! And that ‘96 Devils team didn’t have anything near the talent we currently have on our squad with bottom 6 guys like Bobby Holik and 39 year old fossil Neal Broten centering our top 6 lines often and we had a young Petr Sykora centering Billy Guerin and slow Steve Thomas on our top line nicknamed: the Hells Angels line! As much as I'd love for Askarov to come to NJ and work his way toward becoming our future starter, I think.Nashville would be stupid to get rid of him. Yes, the Predators just signed Saros to a monster deal that keeps him around for a long while, but their current backup is Scott Wedgewood who'll only be there another year. Once Scotty is gone Nashville would be perfectly set up to have Askarov mentored under Saros for a few years as his backup. That would give Askarov another year in the AHL and as a third stringer before jumping to the NHL. And once Saros plays a few more years, and Askarov looks ready to take over for him, Nashville can look into trading Saros and the rest of his contract and move Askarov into the top spot.
Look, we all know Nashville loves developing defenders, and is very good at it. So as much as I think a Seamus Casey plus a 2nd for Askarov, or a Casey and Daws for Askarov trade could work for them, I think they know they'd benefit long term from keeping Askarov. Do I want NJ to try? Absolutely. Then NJ could develop Askarov in Utica this year until Allen is gone, or until Allen is injured if that heaven forbid happens sooner. I just sadly don't see Nashville biting the bullet to trade Askarov. Homegrown netminders with the talent of Askarov are hard to come by. Saros won't be good forever, and the Predators know that.
As for McGroarty? No thanks. He brings good skill and gritensity, but his skating worries me. I would have liked to have seen improvement in that area in his first season in college. The longer that is an issue, the harder it will be to fix IMO.

    • @runninwiththedevils
      @runninwiththedevils  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@MrZeek1519 I think it is inevitable that he is getting moved. He doesn't want to wait around for a starting gig. I can see a world where the Preds end up moving Saros at some point instead; but keeping them both longterm isn't a viable solution. I would be ecstatic if we got this kid without blowing up the team. I would take McGroarty if he came cheaply. It seems he won't be cheap at all, and therefore I am not interested either. The consistent knocks on his skating on all scouting reports frightens me for sure.

And even be better than Mike Green and Green scored 31 goals in 08/09, a feat that hasn’t been duplicated since and can only be compared to Kevin Hatcher of those same Capitals 😂 in 92/93! Fun to talk about but I don't anticipate either of these happening. If Fitz thought he could get Askarov I don't think he would have drafted goalies this year and Askarov said he wanted NHL games so that would mean Allen would be getting moved-- not that it's something that can't happen but I think it's unlikely. Daws has some hope of being an NHL regular but this is really going to be a telling year for him if he gets some reps. The Devils goaltending has been bad for years and the prospects haven't panned out, when does Dave Rogalski get put on the hotseat? McGroarty sounds like he is demanding a lot based on what I heard. I saw something about some teams walking away because he basically wants guaranteed NHL playing time and, while I understand he doesn't want to sit in the AHL, there is a big difference between not wanting to have to do 1-3 years in the AHL and demanding playing time in the NHL. EDIT: Also, I really want to keep Casey. I think he is going to be great and I don't think it will take him long to grow into an NHL role-- especially since he is open to playing in the AHL.

Bottom line, I don't think we have what it takes to get either of these guys without effecting the current roster. The cupboard pieces (picks and prospects) aren't enough imo. Especially with both WPG and NSH wanting to win now with competitive rosters.
My argument for Askarov - Mercer is going to get priced out long-term if both Nemec and Luke command high $$$ contracts over the next two years anyway. Under that premise, it's a matter of if you're comfortable sacrificing a few years more of Mercer in NJ (including making the immediate roster weaker this year) to potentially get a franchise goalie. It would hurt, but I've been really high on Askarov since Fall 2019 and leading up to his draft. I'm biased, but I'd entertain it (Mercer for Askarov). Obviously if it's any combo of non-roster players/picks it's an automatic yes for me, but I frankly don't think that gets it done with Trotz.

I think we've brought in enough new faces that chemistry is a question mark that we need a visual answer to before jumping on some hot commodity. You're 100% right about Daws. I think season after this upcoming one we'll see if he's ready for the spotlight. He didn't deserve to have the pressure that was dumped on him this year, especially when we just decided not to play defense. This may be a hot take but I think Noeson is capable of top six minutes even if we didn't pay him for it. I think Dawson had a sophomore slump last year and he'll be better this year I hope. While I don't believe this is possible, I would genuinely consider playing Luke Hughes as a winger because he could have a lot of chemistry with his brother or another player and quickly be a top 6 forward. He is much more offensively minded than he is a defensive player so being able to swap out Luke for a winger, who is the main missing piece from our team for another good defenseman such as Casey or trade for a shutdown defensive guy would help IMO. I think a tatar mercer hischier and a bratt hughes meier line could work this season but I really have concerns about tatar in the future. Let me know what you think. I won't want to trade mercer for either of those players but at the moment we need more experienced players to win now. Watch what happened with just 2 rookies on defense. NJ had no expendable assets to trade. Dumping Mercer would be a collosal mistake.
No one wanted Siegenthaler, or a Bastian, or an Allen for that matter. And Palat unless you retain 80% is untradeable with his garbage contract.

I think pursuing Askarov would be the smart play here. I wouldn't want to give up the farm for the kid, but Askarov shows a hell of a lot more potential to be a true franchise goalie who would have a spot to step in within a year and poised to take over sooner than later. I could see moving Casey and one of the goalies in the stockpile for him.
My concern with McGroarty isn't his playing skills or speed, but his attitude. He seems to be expecting to be thrust into a starting NHL job right away and not be seasoned in the AHL, and he's not THAT good of a prospect to have the leverage to demand going right to a starting top 6 job without earning it. I don't want to have a pain in the ass player in the roster like a Pierre-Luc Dubois that ends up being a headache rather than an asset to the team. I was into the idea of going after him at first but the more that gets revealed about his expectations and what his agent has put out there in terms of the kid's demands, the more I'm soured on risking that type of player being part of this club.

id be ok with getting either or both but id personally never trade casey for mcgroarty. to much of a risk especially when casey could potentially be a piece for a win now player in the forward group at the deadline. if the devils do trade for askarov i think we will have a goalie log jam. i do think askarov is capable of contesting allen out for the backup role this season which is why i think we will have a log jam, but thats not a bad problem to have for the team as a whole. askarov is going to be a big time goalie. how big? well that depends on him. but i also dont want to forget about Yegorov either, the kid was the #1 rated goalie in this years draft for a reason. and he managed to get to that point on a team that was very bad defensively, meaning he carried his team often. so the kid has serious potential as well. so i think because of that askarov is more of a want over a need, but id still do it if i could just because askarov is 100% more proven than a player that was just drafted and itll create a good problem in net in the future if both live up to their potential.
