    Thanks a lot for this video. I've tried garam masala and generic curry powder in my cooking, and I have to say the curry powder is still a bit more accessible to my western tastes. I will introduce new spices like cardmom, cinnamon, clove, mace, hing and the like one-by-one to try to find a "go to" blend for my Indian dishes. My favorite dishes already feature coriander, cumin, fennel and turmeric so I guess I was making curry powder without even knowing it.

    This shows the importance of not buying too many spices. I made the mistake of buying enough to last me over a year. It eventually began losing its flavour and so I had to either use it excessively - looking for any excuse to put it in every dish - or simply bin it. It’s tempting to purchase large packets of seeds, as the price is reduced by weight, but it is better for the average person to simply opt for the smaller packets or jars.

  • @mapledev
    @mapledev 10 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    "Curry" is not a naturally occurring spice -- It's a spice blend made with other spices. The spice blend in this video is called curry powder because this is what curry is! You can make curry powder spicy or mild or taste slightly different depending on what spices you use and how much of them you put in.

      2. If u have two spoons of whole spice then 2 n half spoon of grounded spice will work well

      Hahaha hallo Ladies : I have just stumbled onto this video and want to thank you.
      Listening to the mention of single Batchelors wanting unique curry had me pay attention so keenly. And I am impressed by the simplicity of having one's very own curry brand.
      Which reminds me : recently I have fallen in love Goan Vindaloo and have often neglected the recipe due to the different spice and then other ingredient mixtures.
      Isn't there a "go-to" mixture one can keep stored/on hand to speed up the process of authentic Vindaloo cooking ?
      I shall continue researching this but would like to hear experienced recommendations and tips.
      Kind regards from sunny South Africa,
