Thanks! I will put LEDs everywhere in my new renovated apartment. I am planing this since about a year and now I really need to buy them. So this is the perfect timing with your video. A week or two later and I would have bought the "old" types. Thanks! I just ordered 15m to have a closer look at them. Currently I have some Dig-Quads but I guess it's time that I build the Dig-Octa.
I thought the Dig-quads are DIY and I just discovered that you sell them complete. I just ordered some. I guess then I can't claim I soldered them myself - at least they will work. ;)

It looks really great! I always wanted to do something with APA102 or APA108, but I could never really figure out arduino... I have a lot of experience using strips like WS2813, but nothing with a clock wire, and unfortunately I'm not tech savvy enough to use anything other than preprogrammed controllers... You should be proud of what you accomplished with this project.

You brought up a great point, I bought the 336 led per m and found it was also only addressable per section. Initially I felt it was scammy because the sellers always describe it as "individually addressable". Although you have a good point that 24v would definitely help reduce the wire thickness requirements, especially for primary lighting and integration to typical households, since normal lighting and LED cables are almost always installed with thinner cabling. I bought 5v ones instead of 12 or 24v because I saw in another channel that they're more energy efficient, but this one might change my mind.
i hate being misled. I bought the big daddy 720's and got segments of 10.. it still looks blocky and not as smooth as the 2811 144's

But I have trouble choosing the right strip for my room. I was initially looking to get the 332 led/m, to run it from ceiling to floor. But that distance would be 3 meters, from your video I assumed that that's a problem because they are only 5v? So for 3 meters this 720led/m strip would be better, but the animations would not be as cool due to the 5cm zones? So this is best for a color gradient? And for any less dense strips I would need a cover i guess?

Ah, for now maybe hold off on that, these aren't weather sealed so won't do great outside. I hope they'll introduce weather sealed versions soon!

But for primary lighting, don't they have RGCCW or RGBWW with the extra white channels for better energy efficiency? If I just want nornal white in the room I don't want to turn on my R G or B LEDs at all. But I do want to enable RGB for special occasions.
Realy cool LEDs, but not so sure how to blend them in to my room, since LEDs usualy do not look that cool when they are not shining. Would be to bad to hide theme
It would have been neat to see how the emitters are configured in series and parallel, but I understand that you were trying to make a relatively short video here.
LED "Non neon" has been available in standard analogue RGB for a while, and it's great to get that neon sign look without using neon. Addressable strips like this are an awesome move forward, though they no longer really look like NEON anymore as Neon strips are one colour by their natue. The fexibility of this type of strip really is the big advantage over the standard strips, and being 24Volt, it really helps with voltage drop. The 240 pixel per metre means that even if addressing multiple LED's in a block, it makes it a lot less noticeable and makes the whole strip smoother.
I'd love to see more matrix LED projects in that interests you in the future. We have a lot of strips already :)
BTF has a 12V version too. Do you think there's any difference in terms of performance?

So im just geting started with a WLED, a Dig Quad, and these 24v cob lights. I'm just not sure what LED preference to put into WLED. The product page on Amazon states 100IC so im assuming 100 zones or "LEDs" in WLED. For Amps i went with the products page 70 watts / 24v = 2916ma. How about the voltage selection in WLED? I dont see a 24v option or am i missing something?
Great timing! I'm currently using WS2812b at 30 / meter for my outdoor lighting, but running power injection is a pain. I was going to switch them out for the ws2811 at 96/meter so I can run 12V with less injection, especially since I'm expanding new segments. Should I go with these new strips instead of the WS2811 12v?
Yeah the waterproofing is a concern with these right now, would not recommend them for outdoor. In time they'll likely release one though (I have other COB strip that is encased and IP68), just haven't found one yet.
I would like to use this strip in a project it would only be 6.8 ft what power supply would you suggest?😊
Quindor, great review, and I am considering changing my led strips as a result ! Do these have a separate white channel ? - so I can replace my sk6812 ? Also my diguno’s are a few years old - will they support 24v
Ah, that's a double no... They are pure RGB and even being COB doesn't make them better at white, a dedicated white LED (however mediocre like sk6812) will still be miles better then RGB white.
Early models of the Dig-Uno did not support 24v, please check what is written on the board or the revision history on the web page. :)
Found your video at a great time! My daughter had cheap 30 pixel /m lights encircling her room and was looking for something new with a defused clean look. These seem great! I am new to 24V lights though. She will need 10 meters for her room. If I buy a 24V 10amp power supply will that do the job? Also will WLED on her existing ESP32 30 pin work for 10 meters of these lights or should I switch to a Dig-Uno or a Raspberry Pi 3 I have laying around? Thanks for any advice!
Hey, awesome that the timing is that great! Yes a 24v 10Amp should suffice just fine, best would be if you can inject front + end but only a single injection will work too (only you'll top out at about 5Amps, but still for single colors and generic effects, that's fine). ESP32 will work ok, but we do always advise to fuse everything and with higher voltage this does also become a bit more important (since higher voltage can easier start a fire). So upgrading to a Dig-Uno/Quad isn't required but that would do it for you, but you can also easily do it yourself. :)

Hello thanks for your reply, all is common ground, ass I said they work with the 24v but just not the 12v, have tried multiple reels.. may have to return them. The 12v normal reel of addressable works , seams to be the fcob causing issue..
Are you using one of my Dig boards? If using just a bare ESP without level-shifter and such, then that's likely it. These chips seem to be more strict in regards to the data signal. Or rather, any strip you use without a level-shifter and it works, you're lucky since officially it's out of spec. If you don't have a level-shifter and resistor, try adding it and see if that helps!
i am using bare esp32 no level-shifter. would it be better to use the dig board?.

@harrymeldrum9994 ah well yes, they would prevent a lot of these issues in that sense since they have a lot of features built in specifically to drive these digital type of LEDs. Including level-shifter, resistor, power distribution and fusing, etc.

Hi, this video is great. I'm interested in using these exact LED strips in a project at my home. I have two tray ceilings that I want to light using these strips. Each ceiling is square/rectangle and about 53 linear ft (or 16m). Am I right in thinking that I can use these with a Quinled DigUno Controller and a 24v 20A power supply, injected from both ends of the 53ft strip? I want to avoid having to inject power every 10ft. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hmm, that's a bit odd. You can try cutting off a piece and then soldering wires to it again, maybe the first data chip died but the rest of the strip is still fine? Also make sure to use a level-shifter with these, they need it,
regarding the led rail, i forgot to write most important part - that i would like it so it lights both up and down (really want to put in in the corner, so it is actually 4 strips).

Finally cob stirp that works with dig board, so the question, can dig uno be sufficient for 5m strip? Or is there any limit in terms of how many meter each data channel can handle?
Oh yes, the strip in the video was running off a Dig-Uno! The shots lying down was dual-injected (because that just worked out) but the shots on the wall for instance was single injected. No problem at all! Also because it's only a 100 zones (so you enter 100 LEDs in WLED), no problem at all running it on one data-channel up to about 600 (so 30m)! The Dig-Uno would run out of power delivery though, the strip uses a max of 5Amps per 5 meter so a Dig-Quad or Dig-Octa would be better for those kind of amounts. :)
AARRRGH!! I just finished buying the last of the 50m of WS2815 strips I need for my house-light project, and Quindor shows up here announcing the BTF 24v addressable neon strips... Ain't it always that way? head-desk head-desk head-desk...

Hi, there are not 720 leds per meter, but 720 diodes! it is a misleading name. On 1 meter you have 20 blocks of 12 LEDs Only the blocks are individually addressable. Wled drives individually addressable LEDs, so 20 !
@@yug_diy_designer He had a 5M strip ... so 100. The BTF-Lighting 720LED/M 5 meter strip contains 100 WS2811 chips controlling 36 LEDs per 5cm/2" segment (36 LEDs is actually 12 x 1Red,1Green & 1Blue LED).
How about longetivity and potential heat issues, any first impressions on that?
Running 100% white you certainly need some cooling on there (alu profile) but doing normal effects and such it doesn't run hot at all. So for longevity a alu profile can help a bit but I don't feel it's necessary for these if you run then normally.
So I see the cooleon link you posted shows a 12v variant of these, do you think there would be more addressable zones due to the lower voltage?
No, I tested it, it actually has larger zones and doesn't look as good. :(

This current version is not but I have no doubt they will have versions that are pretty soon.
8:23. I see some led flickering on camera. Is this suitable for video recording or do i use analog strips? When are the analog pre assembled board available again?
If you want to be sure, analog is really best. Ws2811 is about 1.2kHz and ws2814 is 2kHz but it can still be tricky filming if you need wider camera setting ranges.
Still working in the Analog boards, they are coming for sure, but hit some roadblocks. (technical design is done)
Looks great and I am tempted, but 120 watts for 5 meters is just too much. This is the reason I only use LED strips a few places in the house.
My old led strip under the bed used 60 watts so I replaced with a single smart bulb which uses 8 watts for basically the same amount of light. LED strips just have a nicer spread/focus.
120W at 5V is not the same as 8W 110/230V.
Your bulb is the latter.

@@DIYtechie For example: 60W at 12V is equilant to 3.27W at 220V. You cannot compare wattage on a led strip to a bulb, like u did. There is a transformator before the led strip, so you will have to compare input wattage on that with the bulb. That you could either measure or calculate, but its probably around the same as your bulb.
@@haknys Again, watts is the consumption (voltage * ampere), and since you cannot get something from nothing, the input wattage on the led strip transformer will be at least 120w, regardless of whether the input AC voltage is 110v or 230v.
So, 60 w at 12 volts is the exact same consumption as 60 w at 230 v.

This looks great. How is the white rendering? I'd like to use this for a primary light source in bedroom, and the other half does prefer a decent quality white light (for when I'm not home, otherwise it's colour for me :) -- normally I like the SK6812 for its warm white colour and CRI is not amazing but not bad. RGB strips seem to make a nasty blue or nasty yellow colour instead of white. What about this strip?
Yeah no, no RGB strip will ever give off a usable white, it just doesn't have the spectrum. My measurement tools refuse to even give a CRI value because so much of the spectrum is missing. Basically RGB white is a color that looks white but spectrum wise it's just 3 bumps instead of having a broad spectrum like true white. So no, absolutely no usable for anything primary lighting, but I have something coming up for that which will make addressable LEDs more suited for that. This strip today is for cool effects and awesome vibrant colors. :)

Yes, but the software part I was hoping would be around this period is not done yet. Unsure when that will be and without it the strips are barely usable, not even as just on/pff basically. I'll see if I can still make a video about it.

It really depends on your desired look, UCS2904 can be fine too.
I wonder how reliable they are. I have been using the SK6812 strips, and if one fails or acts up, it causes the led's around the defective one to go crazy, and I've experienced the entire strip to be uncontrollable, due to one bad led. So my next purchase, i'm looking for redundancy - if one led acts up, it doesn't affect the rest of the strip. Do you think these new ones would be ok? Thanks!

This has no measurable CRI value and no real white, only RGB white color just like any other RGB strip out there. Maybe it's slightly better in regards to white color since it's very nicely blended together but it's still not a true full white spectrum, so my CRI measurement devices don't even recognize it as "white light" with a CRI value. Don't use for white or any form of primary lighting, I'll have something else for that in a little while which will addressable LEDs much much more usable for that!

if you control this with the Dig-Octa, do you just need the brain board? Or since its 24v, you need the power board as well?
A brainboard or powerboard can both function on their own but it fully depends what functions you need. Normally you'll need both to create a full controller basically but if you say "nah, I just need the brainboard" that's fine but then you'll have to do all power distribution, stabilizing, fusing, etc. yourself.
how does this compare to the SMD2216. I can't find any comments or reviews regarding this light from you anywhere. Does it not work with the QuinLED controllers?
SMD2216 is just a size of the LED package so that by itself doesn't mean anything and it's most likely also an analog LED strip, not digital if no control IC is listed, so no, for the QuinLED-Dig series you need a digital LED strip.
Can I use an aluminium channel with this? I don't need the diffusion but just the look of the channel instead of the raw strip

Yes, no problem! You just need to solder some new wires to the fur half.
Hello can you help me ? I have 24v and 12 v Fcob 8211 Btf lighting and connecting it to esp32. The 24v work no problem, but when i try to get the 12v working.. they are all over the place and blinking and not functioning correctly.. have you heard or come actress this?.
If you are using multiple power supplies do you have the GNDs connected? If not, do so and that will likely fix it.
Any update on the "revolutionary" strip you mentioned?
I'm working towards it, software support still isn't great but at least somewhat there now!
it's odd to call them 'neon', as there's already a small light package we call a 'neon'. I assumed they were, you know, addressable neons. I guess we're calling it this because it approximates "neon signs".
What are your thoughts on the 12v variant of this strip?
Same amount of zones, less bright while running higher Amps and thus more voltage drop. If you've got it, use it, otherwise get the 24v version.

This is 24V and individually addressable.
They use a TM512AC IC.

I have not, I don't believe WLED is compatible with it yet (didn't check). But it does seem per 6 addressable like any other 24v addressable. Which is kind of logical, not much you can do technically, need to drop that voltage somehow.

Also it's 50,18€/5m so I thought they found a way around lowering the voltage.
Ain't no technical way around it, either drop my dividing, drop using LDO or resistors (12v bullet pixels) or using a buck-converter (I have some sample strips with this, buck per 50cm or even per segment). But the listing I saw said it right so at the top in red letters.

For a 24 volt strip like this, what gauge wire is recommended to connect between the power adapter and QuinLED Uno?
Without length of strip and distances of cable I really couldn't say. 16AWG is the max that will go into the terminals.

"16AWG is the max that will go into the terminals." Does this 16AWG mean post-crimped? I have a set of furrules of various sizes. Pre-crimped, only the ones with a 1.3mm (and smaller) tip (labeled AWG 22) seem to fit into the terminals. The tips labeled AWG 16 have a 2.0mm tip. (I am waiting on the actual furrule crimping tool to arrive.)
Yes a ferrule crimped 16AWG will go into the terminals but to make it go in a bit easier you can squish the crimp flat a little bit after crimping!
So according to the power sheet you'll need about 60w for 50% white which covers all effects, colors, etc. Except 100% white thus a single edge injection is fine. So a cable from the Dig-Uno to the LED strip I mean with that, no further power injection required.
The diameter of that cable depends on distance. 60w is 2.5Amps. Let's use a voltage drop calculator! If you use a 1meter 16AWG cable you'll get 0.27% drop, well below that stated max 10%. With a 5m cable that's 1.3% so yeah, with that diameter cable you're likely always going to be fine.
Hope that makes a bit of sense.
@@IntermitTech Yes it does. Thanks for the details. The 16 AWG crimped ferrules fit in without any problems. This is a very vibrant LED strip. Still playing around, but I like the Dynamic effect.

It has 20 zones per meter if you gave 5 meters you enter 100 into WLED.
Really struggling no data info getting through. They are directly powered off a 20v 400w 16.8 amp supply.
I have them driven (through just the data cable) by a standard ESP2866 powered independently at 5v.
Settings, Max current 1670ma, Led voltage “custom” , per LED 50ma (default). Led outputs type: WS281x, GRB, GPIO2. Everthing else at default.
From this I get no control. Please advise what I am doing wrong as all works ok with a SP108E LED Wifi Magic Controller (non WLED).
Ah, do you have GND connected when using multiple power sources? Why 20v? Are you using a level-shifter? No clue how well it will handle a 3.3v data signal.
I only tested using Dig-Uno and Dig-Quad which takes cads of all hose things.

Are the cut points after each addressable segment?
Yes if you look at the comparison shot of the various variants you can see the cut marks and solder pads there. I haven't checked yet if they are also present on the bottom (they often are) but the top pads should suffice in most cases.
Hi. You mentioned something interesting LED strip is coming. Is there any news on this? And an other question: the white of the COB addressable led was good or how you would compered to SMD addressabble stips' white? Thank you mate.
These are basically COB addressable White LED strip with a decent CRI so usable to primary lighting (which normal, even RGBW isn't)! But software support for it is non-existent and also still investigating multiple variants so it'll be a little while still.
RGB white is RGB white, even though the COB material mixes it together better then a standard 5050 package does (so less multicolor shadows), it's still not white light. It's light with a white color, as any color, but not a white light spectrum producing light source. So it's not really any better then any other RGB white.

Cool, but how do you do the math to see how big of a powersupply you need for let's say 5m? Could not find those figures.
I have not yet had time to update the real-world power sheet yet but I'll do so soon, once done you can easily look it up in there. Right now a 24v 5Amp power supply would suffice to run it at 100% RGB White but generally you'll run much lower then that.

You mean in analog form? You can get COB LED strip in analog form too, up to 840LEDS/m and it looks great.

There is a new variant in IP68 but it's much less bright and only 10 zones per meter. So it's a bit hard to recommend, I hope to have a video about it soonish
Can anyone here recommend an addressable LED controller that has software control with a GUI? Theres just not that many reviews of these things, and I want somrthing that will allow me to create my own animations, not just choose from a list of pre-made ones...And isn't some $500 DMX unit....I just want something for my home, not a stage

Although the ESP32 on there supports Bluetooth you'd have to run software on there that works with that. WLED, ESPhome or ESPixelstick do not.
What is your reason for needing Bluetooth? Generally everywhere has WiFi?

Ah I see, well the hardware can do it, you'd just have to get or program the software side for it. I don't know of any pre-existing software like that.

Yes it can be cut cut at every point you see pads on the top, so basically every 5 cm. The diffuser is very soft and easy to cut too.

the problem with the 720's that are available today is that they are not 100% addressable.. they use a segment of 10 Leds per ARGB chip.. so it still looks blocky. I've tried a few of the brands out there. even the 480 and 360/m strips. they're not as smooth as the old school 2811 144/m LEDs
Well yes it's 20 zones per meter vs 144 LEDs, resolution wise that's no comparison. But hey you can get 5v COB up to 332 LEDs a meter if you want too. The 24v COB can easily go 20m with 2 injections, that 144LEDs/m will need one at least every 2m....
@@IntermitTech whats the most smooth/seem-less? I'm happy with the 720's (sort of happy but the project is already done and I've spent the money and cut up the string (no returns.. so) i loved the old school 144/m strings but i always used a cloudy cover to dissipate the light
@chuckholmes2075 check the 5v COB video, to get more smooth then the 720 you'll need higher resolution but then you are stuck with 5v again.

This current version no but they generally bring out versions that can and I expect they won't be far off!

BTF claims that these have a Ra >90. That seems unlikely for an RGB strip. Have you tested the CRi of the strip and is this a legitimate claim by a company that many people trust?
Yeah no, these don't have any CRI, they can display a white color but not true white light, measurement tools won't even register it as white light, so no CRI either, just 3 bumps (RGB) no full spectrum. It's nicer diffused then normal strip (so not 3 color shadows) but that's about it, don't use it for primary lighting, it's a RGB strip and as such for colors and effects and such. The colors are really nice and vibrant though! :D
But, I will have something for this in the future!
@@IntermitTech That makes sense, but then why does BTF (and others) advertise a color rendering index of over 90 and show the usual "good vs bad" CRI images on the item pages? I understand that you don't know the answer, but it means that these claims are fraudulent.
As for the future... BTF carries some white FCOB strips including 24V CCT WS2811 ;), but they all have the exact same "Ra >90" specification as these RGBs, though I imagine that the spec might be true for some of those.
Well, that's getting ahead of things a little bit, but that's the next thing I mentioned in the video. I have tested (multiple varients from several vendors actually) and some are actually decent CRI90! But software support still needs to become available (within WLED) for instance to make then really usable. Hence not recommending them yet.
Oh and vendor claims yeah, what can I say, there are reasons I buy all this stuff and test it personally, have a spectrometer, etc.....

Yeah that will still take some time I fear. There is LED types that support it like APA102/HD107s and such but if you run those through WLED for instance it'll still only be addressed in 8 bit mode since it just doesn't have the calculations in there. Analog can also do many more values depending on bit depth the dimmer is running at.
But yeah, I agree that especially at lower brightness levels it would really help to have a bit better range but someone needs to make a cheap (mass produced) chip and help with software support and then hopefully in a few years.
So in that sense the Dig-Quad can support this no problem, it all depends on the software that is running on the ESP32 but if it's powered by NeoPixelbus (Like WLED) it'll be stuck with 8Bit per channel colors.
But how is the white?? (Did i miss that part?)
This is an RGB strip so there is no white in that sense. You can combine all the colors to make RGB white but that is just a color with the shade white and isn't true white light in regards to spectrum or color! My meters won't even recognize it as white light in that sense, way too much of the true white spectrum is missing.
For RGB white shade it looks ok, since all the LEDs are quite close together.
@@IntermitTech Thanks - I'm about to take the black-friday plunge on about 100 feet of LED's to go around a large bedroom, I want addressable and bright and good whites, so that was an important detail for me. (The WWA's you mentioned in another video are interesting.) I was about to pull the trigger on 6 x 5 meters of these new COB LED's, and still may, but now I'm second-guessing because of the white factor. Perhaps I can run these along with WWA's on separate controllers but in the same strip... :hmm:
@JonathanYankovich there is an RGBW version of it now, but it has 7cm zones and looks a bit worse for colors and brightness but does have actually decent white! So if it has any primary lighting purpose you can consider that one. The zones are a bit big for my taste, but reflected into a cove or something it could still be ok. BTF also sells it ws2814F version.
It will be reflected off the ceiling, but zone size is still important to me, and if i'm going to do all the labor and cost, I want something with pretty high resolution. Not so much concerned about seeing individual pixels move around, but smooth transitions are very important. I'd like it if WLED "Meteor" and "Fireworks" would look decent. Looks like WWA's are only available in 5v, is that right? I wonder if it's worth the effort. The Wife Acceptance Factor would be highest with the WWA's, and i could add RGB's later if i felt fanciful, assuming enough space in the strip. So many decisions! (PS, i took your advice to go with 24v, but it may become a limitation if i can't find the right mixture of other features).. Www still doesn't have anything about CRI70 so while it is a dedicated white LED I still don't recommend it for anything primary, also not bright enough for that at all. Maybe then use 2 strips if you have the room?

Huh, and they're buyer protection system isn't kicking in? I generally also buy through Aliexpress or alibaba or sometimes directly through some local folk in Shenzhen I know, but never had an issue with Aliexpress/alibaba myself at least.
