    I had a $50 amazon antra hood for my mig welding needs at work. I don’t weld that much as a auto technician. I bought a lincoln 3350 hood for my personal tig welding side jobs and I wish I would have bought it a lot sooner. Ditched the cheap antra so now I use the 3350 for both mig and tig. The color is a lot better and its more clear too. Worth the extra $250

      I absolutely love love love my 3350! I went the same Amazon route, at first. Nobody at my job site could get the P.O.S. hood to work. Returned it and bought the 3350. Now everyone at work is asking to use my hood when they weld!
      I'm a sheet metal Fabricator building dump trucks down here in South Florida, so the weight of the hood is nothing and on some days we weld the full 8hrs. So super happy about my 3350!

    The Böhler Guardian 62 you showed does have 4(!) sensors. It has an excellent true color lens. It provides a very clear view of the welding process and doesn't flash you when doing TIG welding with very low Amps. Here in Europe it only costs about $140! I bought mine three years ago and can 100% recommend it.
    I see no real benefit in the helmets with a large field of view. The 62mm by 98mm of the Böhler is more than sufficient.

    Surprised you didn’t mention the fibre-metal tiger hood with flip up lens. In the real world probably the most widely used hood. About $40 dollars plus a $80 to $100 auto darkening lens, if you want a auto darkening lens. . Easy to find and very economical clear lens and non auto darkening lens provided on most jobs. If you show up as a new welder in a shop or construction job with a hood with flames all over it, you better be one hell of a welder

    I'm running:
    - kowax 820 ARC+
    Comfy, nice real colour lens but kinda big so can't reach everywhere with it, backlight can be a struggle sometimes and also smoke gets under it easier.
    - speedglas 9002
    less comfy than kowax but lens are pretty awesome (I really wanna try natural color lens), breathe out vent holes are nice when it's colder because I'm not breathing on lens. And as was mentioned by Ray it's light and slick so I use it when I'm getting a lot of backlight or can't fit with kowax somewhere.
    - pipeliner hood with no.9 glass
    sometimes things get out of hand and keep flashing myself when using auto darkening lens. For this case I have good old mask with passive lens (no.9 works for me with TIG). HF starts are not that easy first but when You get a hang of it it's all good.
    Right now I'm looking for something between kowax and speedglas but the pipeliner will stay.
    And not to forget, thanks a lot for yet another very informative video.

    Just remember that the fancy helmets get wrecked just as easily as the the cheapos. Also another thing to take into consideration is if your employer is paying for your clear lenses. If your overhead welding or gouging youll chew em up real quick. I like the Sellstrom flip up 2x4 1/4 lense (45$). All three polycarbonate lenses replace for less then a dollar. Then i use my Arc One HD Single 12 shade(120$) if im welding and just a hunk of glass for gouging. Those are Canadian pesos!

    I'm doing a lot of thin stainless sheet metal (0.5 - 1mm) at work, rather low amp welds between 40 and 90 amps and I'm very happy with my supplied 3m Speedglas 9100x. They do cost a few bucks but lightweight, low profile, 3strap + tension strap comfty wearing for hours, no external controls/buttons or other things that can get stuck. The glass itself is top notch, all settings are available and visible from the inside, it auto-darkens when turned off/battery low to prevent accidental arc flashing. The 2 CR2032 cells are easily swappable when necessary, ) I have yet to find a better helmet.

    @zumbazumba1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Cheap non auto darkening hood with good quality glass is better and safer than a cheap auto darkening hood ,especialy for hobby people that dont want to spend 1000$.
    There is a trick for non auto darkening hoods -sometimes when i weld in my basement and its dark with no natural light its hard to see where to start arc-even on 10 shade.
    Thats why i use cheap led flood light i attached to my hood.10W of power, its light and makes whole lot of difference.You can also use it in other hand if you are comfortable that way.Glass on flood light will get those "flakes" (i dont know how to call it,same thing happens on clear glass welding hood)but they are so cheap and last long to pay themself off.
    When welding outside sometimes sun can come in so i put a towel over the back of my head and i just use a tape to tape one end to the hood.No more Mr.Sunshine on my screen !

    • @DanielPaprocki
      @DanielPaprocki 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why non auto darkening hood is better and safer than auto darkening hood for under $1k? I'm new to welding and safety is very important for me🤔

    • @zumbazumba1
      @zumbazumba1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DanielPaprocki Beacause most of those chinese craps dont last very long .
      Most of them do have uv protection even when off but cheap auto darkening hoods will flash you when starting arc which tires eyes.
      Plus all the fuss with batery's that they eat .
      And most of them are shit if you weld in natural outdoor light ,sensors dont work properly.
      Do your budget a favor and buy a standard flip welding hood -deacent ones are around 10€. Then buy a AULEKTRO
      mirror glass for it(regular blue also work nicely and they are cheaper) and several replacement clear front glasses(that should be around 30€ total depending on options) .
      You will get better protection and clear visibility than any auto darkening hood can provide in that price range .
      Dark glass lasts for years if you dont brake it,ofc front clear you replace .
      Auto darkening is a covinience ,for lazy people . Something that is nice to have but to work properly you need to invest a lot of money.
      People welded with dark glass for century
      ,its cheap,economic and always work -perfect for beginer that wont make a lot of money at first.

    The best advice I would give is buy a good helmet if you're wearing it all day. You only get 1 set of eyes in your life. If you weld as a hobby a cheaper helmet isn't too bad, but if you do it for a living it's well worth while. I really like my sentinel a50. Well worth $300 and every bit as good as my Miller elite. The 3m hood is also very good in my opinion, or was when I had one. Sorry I treat em fashionably lol. I want to look good while I'm welding. Anyhow that's my advice. Optrel crystal hoods and opteel hoods are horrible quality. Had one for a month and it spent 3.5 weeks in for repairs and fmdefects after having the lens replaced 6 fucking times each new lens had the same defects. Optrel admitted their quality control is having issues since last year as well so I highly recommend avoiding optrel anything

    There all good if you work in the ac all day. If your like most shops in the south your hood won't last a year getting drenched in sweat.

    You forgot 2 more type -a leather welding hood,those are used in confined spaces.Like between two pipes welding.
    And a goggles type monkey mask -its like oxyacetilene torch goggles but with leather attached to protect your face from radiation.

      He didn't forget them. There just aren't any sponsors for them.

    • @Welddotcom

      @@InchFab These were not all associated to sponsors/partners. Jeff was going through an assortment of welding hoods that we had in the lab and also some of his. We didn't include every single type, in the future we can possibly do one specific to the pipe welding industry. Thanks for the feedback.

    Nothing wrong with a flip-up with a passive gold coated lense.
    No need for all this electrical lense cobblers 3/4 of which are worth shit when it comes to tig welding as they flash

    This videos pretty bad, not very in depth and these helmets are kinda obscure. most people will get miller’s or Lincoln’s I don’t know why he didint really cover them and went for the ones he uses instead.
