So it sounds like Щ has more of a hissing snake sound, and Ш has a windy, "whooshing" sound. Is that correct?

By the way, I have not noticed many Russian words with "Щ" in it so far.

So you want your tongue positioned as if you're trying to pronounce English R while at the same time saying shhh. For the ш. And for the other sound щ , you want to say shhh like in the expression "oh sh!t!"

There were lots of these fishes,
Very delicious but it had lots of bones ,
It was very long time ago ,I was on boat with Russian friend and cold beer and lots and lots of these fishes were biting ,very strong fish .

But now I don’t know ,I am talking very long time ago ,
These days the cities have expanded and environment has changed ,
I just tried it in my Google Translate. Works beautifully. I tried balloon, but it made me put this word, воздушный, with the word шар in order to get balloon. Maybe it's one of those words that goes without saying? Don't know, but I'm glad I know the difference between those two sounds now. Adds to my pronunciation skills greatly.
You know, Phil, шар is a ball, can be filled with air=воздушный шар, can be used in games = шар для бильярда, can be the planet: шар земной (Earth)

Hey, balls for games are often called МЯЧ: футбольный мяч, баскетбольный мяч, мяч для гольфа, теннисный мячИК because it's small)) we often use suffixes to indicate the size: ИК/ЧИК for small things: домик, мячик, столик, телефончик, шкафчик
@@LiveRussian Well, doesn't пинг-понг spell ping-pong? Lol, I guess it does, don't it. That's interesting ain't it, and the other examples also sound very much like their English counterparts. You know I been meaning to run an idea past you to see what you think. I'm sure you're aware of how loosely translators tend to translate the Russian into its English counterpart. For example, both letters й and ы tend to both be translated to y. But that's impossible, isn't it. Both letters can't translate to y, can they? No. Because those two letters have two very distinct and different sounds. Y works very well for й. But, ы is not a y and it doesn't have a y sound. Nope. Ы in fact sounds more like what the English calls a short ĭ. They also tend to translate this letter и to i, and it is not an i it is a long ē.
Let me clarify. In the English vowels are either designated as long or short. The e in the word "pet" for example is a short ĕ. See the short mark above it? However, the e in the name Pete, the e in question is a long ē. See the long mark above it? A more correct way to translate the Russian word "спаcибо" would be spasēbŏ instead of spasibo because this letter и is a ē, not an i. In the Russian word "ты" this letter ы is more of a short ĭ instead of a y. In the Russian are whole letters to represent longs and shorts. In the Russian, this и is a long ē . This э is a short ĕ. This й is a y. This ы is a short ĭ. Then, there are the other Russian vowels that have their own peculiar sounds.
@@phillipferrell4067 You raised an interesting question, Phillip (should I just call you Phil?) You see, the "translation" you mean is transliteration, and there are certain rules of transliteration that are already set by professionals. Look, the Ы is like i in "bit", but the transliteration is "y", so every time you see y in stansliteration, you just keep in mind "bit" and read it this way, Й sounds like Y in "Yeah!" but transliterates as j normally. I have this Когда мы были на войне video, I made transliteration there, you can check it out and in the pinned comment I gave some explanations) Cheers!

It's basically the same tongue positioning with the difference between the Serbian Џ (DŽ) and Ђ (Đ/DJ) or the Ч (Č) and Ћ (Ć).

Has anyone ever tried comparing these two sounds to Mandarin Chinese sounds? It seems that the Chinese X (as in President Xi Jin Ping) is lighter than the Russian Щ sound. It also seems that the Chinese Sh (as in Shang Hai) is slightly stronger than the Russian Ш sound.
In phonetical transcriptions I've already encountered they are shown with the same 'sign' from IPA CHART either in Russian words or chinese one

and a female person "Obrigada [о́бригада]".

My mother is a native Russian speaker (born/raised in Ukraine but moved to the USA in the 70s). She tells me the "Ш" is like an ordinary "sh" in English, but the "Щ" sounds more like "shch." It sounds different from your video. Is this a Ukrainian dialect or something?
I'd say that neither Ш or Щ exists in English in its pure form, our Ш is harder than your sh and Щ is much softer.
I don't think people understand when you say "hard" or "soft", neither sound is either hard or soft for us. I think Russians use this terminology because they were raised with it, but the rest of us still do not understand what is meant to be "hard" etc

You should have the word you are pronouncing written on the screen. Most of us are beginners, and can't even figure out which letter is being pronounced when. Yes, we can look up the words, but it's much simpler if they just appear on the screen.
