The BMT is like a dirt country lane, the AT has become pretty much a 4 to 6 lane interstate highway as far as "traffic". The more popular a trail becomes, the less desire I have to hike it 😂. Loving your trail through the Smokies. Except for that bad blow down section, I've loved all of the BMT. So glad you decided to hike the trail less traveled and share it with us.

Good to know you can still turn on the jets if you have to. Great finish to a great hike.

Hawk, when you started the BMT I'm saying to myself that the trail would be boring and not many views or interesting things. Well you proved me wrong and I say it is a great trail. Thanks for the hike!

Day 16 (Eclipse Day) and HAWK is up early for what turns out to to be his combined longest/hardest day on the BMT at 29 (maybe 30) miles with lots of up and down. . . .Sun shinning, grass growing and birds chirping keep HAWK positive as always, he manages the creeks (often via cool bridges) and the 5,000 foot summits/ridgelines all the while getting us the views and soaking up the Sun and solitude of the BMT before his ultimate destination for the day which was the Mount Sterling Fire Tower, but HAWK being HAWK still gets us the views and then "crushes" an additional "strong" 6 miles to Exit the Smokies and avoid the incoming weather to a well deserved shuttle ride back to the HAWK'S Nest and civilization thus completing the BMT. . . .at one point (@28:41) HAWK claims he hasn't "lost it yet", but us HAWK Fans know he "lost it" a long time ago and that is part of what makes his HST so loyal and his videos such great company. . . .Congrats and get out on Trail again soon. . . . and finally for Today's HAWKISM @3:00 we have some classic HAWK rambling, "I don't even know why I waste my breath saying it any more. . .(HAWK chuckle). . . .Breath is valuable out here especially while you are climbing. . . (HAWK Laugh).. . .That is Funny!" Yes, it is HAWK yes it is, Thanks again for bringing us along.

@@CraigMains Went hiking in the ADK for the Eclipse and got to witness it atop GRACE Peak (one of the 46 High Peaks) . . . . .we got Totality in Northern NY and it was worth it, despite the unbelievable traffic jams heading South even after not exiting the woods until 8:30pm.

@@stevelabombard1777 Exiting the woods we saw the 7 mile "traffic jam" on Rt. 73 and since our car was facing North and no traffic North on Rt. 73 we went North to the Keene STEWARTS and had a couple of milkshakes and waited an hour for traffic to clear but still caught "the traffic bubble" around Exit 27 of the Northway and only went between 5mph and 40mph all the way to Exit 22 (Lake George) where it widened to 3 lanes and it was still crazy crowded but at least a steady 65 mph. . . . overall left home at 5:15am to start the drive up and started hiking at 6:30am hit the summit at 1:30pm and stayed on the summit until 4:00pm then out of the woods at 8:30pm and ended up home (Hudson Falls) at Midnight, but more than worth it.

Nice trail. Love all the creeks and rivers. Views today were great. Loved the different colors within the forest you were walking through today. Boy, you knocked out some miles today. Glad you were able to finish today. I'm with you. Would much rather spend a rainy night in my van than on top of a mountain at the fire tower. Thanks for sharing the BMT with us. If I was physically able to hike, this one would be on my bucket list. See you on the next trail, Craig.

I've been to that campsite with the Metal Bridge from this morning's video twice! It's a great little campsite you were right about those bear cables by the bridge because mice ate the crap out of my food bag the first time LOL
The first time we stayed at that campsite was on a 50 plus mile loop from Newfound Gap up to tri corner back to Laurel Gap and then back to Newfound Gap. Laurel Gap shelter used to be one of the last caged in shelters in the Smokies, but it looks like they've definitely redone it lots of horse trail up in that area. That Loop was one of my favorites because you had the Ridgeline of the northern part of the Smokies and then got to experience that back country trail. The northern part of the Smokies is absolutely some of my favorite hiking ever
It's great to hike alone, but if you do have a friend, let him go first, so it takes down all those spider webs😂
    Thanks for sharing the journey

Damnit, back to waiting for the next Hawk adventure. BMT was nice though. A little bit ATish and a little bit IATish.
Funny is I was watching 5 stacks video yesterday. He gets in to Port Clinton, he's walking into town saying "Man, I could go for some Thin Mints or a candy bar of sorts but it's a shame there's no convenient store in this town." And pushes right on through town. It had me thinking "Dude you're right next to the largest candy store on the AT!" He totally missed it.

    Hi Craig.
Very much enjoyed your BMT videos.
I lived in Cumming, GA for 22 years (Feb. 1999 - May, 2021).
I walked the GA section mostly alone on day hikes, up and back. So, I was interested in seeing what the sections north looked like. As usual you did a great job in showing us the trail + your good narration.
Like you, I was very disappointed in the blow-down section. Can't understand why a trail like this would have such a section. Certainly, at least they could have put up the markers.
You've given me an idea about hiking in the Smokies. Since the southern end of the BMT in the Smokies is where the AT enters the park (Fontana Dam), one could hike the BMT north to its end. Pickup the AT at Davenport Gap, and hike it back to Fontana Dam.
When I did the Smokies section (I've made it to Caledonia State Park in PA), hiked it north.
Would have to figure out the logistics of food drops (especially at Newfound Gap), but it sounds interesting in theory.
Look forward to your next series.
    God Bless!

@@CraigMains You misunderstood. There are some people who like the solitude and want to keep it as such. The ATC has, in the last 15 years campaigned to get the whole country hiking the AT and now there's so many that before long you will have to apply to a lottery drawing to get to hike it. Think I'm wrong? In 2008 trail magic on the AT was just that and we had it about 2-3 times. Now it's one long restaurant.
