Today you have given me a gift greater than any other. You're a hiker, I'm a historian. When I see those old cars, you may see rust, but I see the moment they rolled off of the dealership lot, trying to picture the moment they were taken home to a family, maybe used to run moonshine through the mountains. When you saw that brick chimney standing by itself in the woods, I saw a family huddled around that fire trying to stay warm, maybe trying to cook a meal. My mother's family came from the foothills of the Blue Ridge, and my mother was born into a dirt floor one room cabin. As you pass through those lands, I am loving it. Thank you.
Hi Hawk, those were boar traps ... the smokys has issues with wild hogs. Beautiful Vistas, flowers and old cars. I love the Smokys. Thank you for this gorgeous hike.
My old stomping grounds, lots of great memories . Thank you Craig !! You need to check out all the backcountry trails . The AT is a zoo most of the year.
Afternoon, Craig. Loved the hike along rivers, creeks, and the lake. Was surprised by the vehicles along the trail and all the displaced housing. The trail was nice today, pretty forest. Looking forward to tomorrow's walk. Take care. Stay safe. See you in the morning.
Awesome video Hawk! Beautiful trail, love everything about it. “See you soon AT” YES!!!!! 👏 I hope you had a good nights rest. Take care and stay safe! God bless!
What a great hike today. How much did your feet want to turn and head for the AT? 😂😂. Cool bridge!! Id love to have a house on the creek likenthe Calhoun House, sad to see it in such disrepair. This was a great day for you on trail, thanks for taking us along.
That is a very cool old truss bridge. It was probably built after WWII because it is bolted together. Up until WWII, most were riveted. Its a shame that they didn't put a roof on it so that it would last longer. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Most if not all of those cars were abandoned during WWII either due to the lack of tires due to rationing or the inundation of the road due to Fontana lake. You've probably already seen a lot of cemeterys on this trail. On certain days of the year the NPS provides transportation to relatives of the people buried there. That's why you will see a few drivable roads. Unfortunately the graffiti only gets worse along the lakeshore trail😮.
Great Metal Monuments on the trail, although not much to restore lol! I am amazed at these old of what I call Monuments of old bridges, fireplaces, homes and all the old items so cool!!
Day 13 sees a well rested HAWK raring to go on a 23.9 mile first day in the Smokies. . . .he had been looking forward to this particular section of the BMT and he gives us a lot in this episode including a way to save a few bucks hiking in the Smokies on the BMT instead of the AT, up close and personal with several old car relics, a tour of the remnants of an old home and later a walking tour of the Calhoun House , a couple rants regarding graffiti, the Eagle Creek Bridge and even tells us of his most recent bear(s) encounter on his way to the underwhelming Kirkland Creek Campsite . . . .and for Today's HAWKISM @5:33 with no one else to talk to out on trail he directs his conversation to the Sun, "Hello Sun! . . . .Are you going to make it warm today? . . I hope (HAWK chuckle)."
@wildcardandace4273 Hope you're doing well brother 🙏🏻 Give Duke 🐾 a scratch behind the ears for me my friend 😊Stay safe and take care 🙏🏻Appreciate you!
I should have waited before I asked the question bout Fontana but didn't realize that old homes and cars were on that trail thanks and glad you are back learn something new from you all the time

What a nice trail . Between the stream old cars and house. I give it a 8 out of 10 day 😊👍
Do you think back in the day, those were horse trails for the community to get from one place to another, cool very beautiful.
A very nice section here compared to all those downed trees. The old buildings and cars and that great bridge, you never know what is next!

These are the cars of hikers who ventured into the Smokys without proper gear.

Great to see video did expect one until Tuesday. Interesting history on community.
Fontana has a lot of dark history surrounding its creation. Seeing all of those cars strewn about is pretty eerie. Thank you for the videos and views!

Those "trails" are narrow gauge track railroad for the timber harvesting back in the day.
Wow. I was pretty sure the bridge used to have tracks.
Good to see ya! 🤜
🤜🏻
Good stuff, Hawk.
What an awesome trail!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Have you seen any snakes. It might be too early for them. I don’t know
Nope
My Nannie was from Proctor, both my parents families were displaced by Fontana.
That must have sucked.

Is this at Fontana Lake
Yes
I should have waited before I asked the question bout Fontana but didn't realize that old homes and cars were on that trail thanks and glad you are back learn something new from you all the time
I wear my hat the same way.
Makes me wonder if the Benty can be used as a good reroute trail if early seasoners want to avoid blizzards on the AT portion.
It could be but…it’s not the AT
@@CraigMainsTrue. True.
You know Craig you need wheels to make a car go. :)
Wow what a shame on that house. It sure is pretty in there.
