How on earth can anyone watch this and think it's bias? Here are the pluses and minuses of each, they're both great, whatever you already have you should stick with. NOT even his comments about build quality "ruggedness" could be construed as subjective. It's simply a verifiable fact the D700 has a thicker chassis, higher rated shutter mechanism and more extensive atmospheric sealing.
Totally agree with you. He loved both cameras and said so. The higher frame rate and sturdier build of the Nikon is obviously more important for say sports photographers and the better video and resolution for landscape photographers. 12 mp combined with a terrific lens is good enough for anyone. He only said he would be keeping the Nikon D700 as it was his in the first place
andwestuk Exactly, they're both fantastic products. No matter which one a person chooses they're getting a fantastic product with a great selection of lenses. I have a preference based solely on which feels most comfortable in my hand and is most intuitively functional...... for me. I've owned full rigs for both brands and they both produce fantastic lenses. I dare anyone to attempt to consistently identify the camera used based on reviewing prints.
No one tool does every job equally as well. No one camera does every job equally as well. I have used Nikon cameras since 1973 as a professional photographer. I've invested over $160,000 in Nikon gear over the years, so I should be a Nikon or nothing shooter, but that's just not the case. I have tested Nikons vs Canons in similar configurations and Nikon does have less noise at higher ISO. Canon has a better color palette for skin tones. Nikon has a more contrasty snap to the color palette.
In the studio over the years, I used Mamiya RB67 cameras for portraits and Hasselblads for more commercial subjects with edges and for more industrial images. Same with Nikon and Canon. For sports photography, harsher industrial images Nikon's color palette is better suited, but for fashion and portraits and glamour where a more gradual fade between skin tones is needed, the Canon color palette reproduces skin tones better. Canon's transitions better between lighter skin tones and darker tones.
My D700 replaced one of my F5s. I can't fault the camera and I've been using Nikon since 1983. I shot at Crufts in Birmingham and the Canon guys were complaining about the light problems. The Nikon sailed through completely unfazed.
I agree with caesar09, i think its ridiculous how you said that the d700 is more durable. They are both magnesium alloy bodies, they are both very solidly build. They will both hold up perfectly well with abuse.
Just bought a Nikon D3200 about 2 months ago with 18-55mm & 55-200mm kit lens for $750 inc 2 extra batteries. Just found a used D700 with less than 4000 actuations for $1000. I'm extremely impressed with the D3200 for basic video functions and super happy with the D700 as a FX camera. The camera is a tank when compared to the 5D MKII which I used before I bought the D3200.
@forestskog Unless she is doing high end stuff, no need for super high resolution. Unlikely a microstock site is selling much for billboards etc. If you want any specific feedback on particular camera combos, let me know.
@thatnikonguy ya i was just putting it out there because so many people get wrapped up in stats and forget the creativity comes from the person not the tool. but you are 100% right that both cams are awsome and if your invested in nikon go with nikon same with canon.
The difference between the two in high ISO is negligible, if anything at all. I'm tired of the fanboy snobs on both camps. Pros and masters shoot both.
Well now that's a good question... I would say look at the exif data... if they will let you put in a card, take a picture & upload it to your laptop, you should be able to find the info.
@forestskog My advice is to look for a used D90, or a brand new D7000 if she has some photography experience. If not, if she is a complete beginner to photography, then the D3100 or D5100 is more than enough. If you are willing to spend the money then the D7000 and D300s are very good options..
The tool is the tool... you have to know your tool... to love your tool... of course there are diferences... there are brands... but you are the one who makes the tool worth it... like on film industry... IF YOU HAVE A ... Arri alexa and you make it look like a handycam... and maybe you have a regular hd semi pro camera... and you can make it look like a pro... its all bout yourself, to know what you want and what you need to achive the image you want to show... the right light and the r. lens.
You failed to compare both cameras at the same magnification. 100% crop is not the same when comparing two different file sizes. The 5dii is MUCH larger which is why it doesn't appear as sharp and is noisier compared to the d700.
Why are you comparing bokeh? This isn't a lens test, it's comparing the quality of the cameras. Plus, you can hardly see the bokeh on the 5D anyways, all you can see is the out of focus color blob of a piece of one. Why didn't you compare the second shot? If you are going to talk lenses, the Canon 70-200 looks a bit shaper.
I own both of them. Frankly speaking Nikon is away better than Canon. At least after 2 years of using it I never encountered a single error while on the other hand Canon is keep giving me err 06 err 04 etc etc. One more thing to add is pixel density, Nikon it gives you high quality images even if it's 12.1 MP.
21.1MP vs 12.8MP, HD Video VS No Video, similar image quality (except that you'll see less of that noise on average sized prints when using the higher resolution camera.) I also see absolutely no need for 51 AF points... 75% of the time, I set one AF point for what I am shooting, and have never had any troubledoing so with any camera that had more than five. Sadly, with a reduced resolution and no video, .... the d700 is still $200-300 more expensive... (Welcome to the world of Nikor....)
@thatnikonguy Let's not forget that the D7000, semi pro and pro level Nikon cameras have a motor to enable AF for Nikkor D lenses; that gotta add "a few grams". But I do believe Nikon are a bit more solid (which is not the same as being "better built"). Thanks for the video; it was helpful.
And to answer your question, No, ... not a big sports photographer. I shoot weddings and portraits mostly, but the video feature has come in handy NUMEROUS times.. And actually, if you only count the amount of time the shutter is open as being the time comparison, ... Yes... :-P The sensor has certainly seen more video than stills..
Why do people get so angry in commenting. LOL. Nice review. Nice lawnmower in the background haha. I wish the battery didn't die when you were comparing frames per second. :( The Nikon costs more than the Canon, but Canon has high def video. This is a no-brainer. Unless you don't mind spending $500 more without getting video. And you simply must have the "better handling" of the Nikon.
@leo140485 Thanks for comment - yes silly about the battery, I apologise. It was not my camera - and I forgot to check. I shoot outdoors mostly, so that test is valuable.
@forestskog If she already has a DSLR like D40, D50, D60, D70, etc then a D7000 would be a nice upgrade. If she has the D90, I really don't see her needing an upgrade anytime soon unless she is turning a full pro like a wedding photographer then she might want to consider a full frame DSLR like the D700, D3, D3x, or D3s. Also if she has the D90 there is no point of upgrading to the D7000 as there is little difference between the two and there is no point of "down grading" to the D5100, or D3100.
@forestskog Since she is a lady I would guess the D7000 would fit better in her hands than the D300/D300s. But don't forget to ask her opinion: see what she needs, what she wants (I didn't need a D700, I just wanted it...I am not a pro by any means!), and let her try different cameras to see how they fit in her hands and how she feels about the different cameras (ergonomics are important). Good luck.
@forestskog To be honest, most of my popular photos were taken with a 5 years old point and shoot camera (Canon S3IS). The D3s is way an overkill for stock photography, unless she is planning to photograph concerts or sports at night...even the D700 is an overkill. Remember, it's difficult to make money from those stock sites because there's a lot of competition and you only get a small percentage of the sale. But again that depends on her photography skills.
@4670sayan because I shoot 90% stills, 10% video, I own all nikon lenses and accessories, and the 5D is not built for my usage. If was starting from scratch again, Canon would be an option.
@JD95 i think is personal decision,i own top line canon and nikon and i love both both have excellent lenses and there is nothing to compare, canon has excellent lenses, for example canon can't beat 14-24mm 2.8 or 24-70mm 2.8 these 2 lenses area a hair sharper than canon, and i love the new 70-200 from canon than the 70-200 vr i think is personal opinion,i shoot wedding with nikon and portraits with canon,i can wait to shoot with the new d4 and d800e but the thing is have fun shooting!!!
Hi, i baught it. Its got and he threw in a nikkor 24-120 mm. he also threw in 4 filters/2 battery back. the high speed memory card and a high end camera backpack. He also ordered a nikon charger for me. Im thinking i got a sweet deal. I have NO idea how to use it but im sure wanting to learn. Whats the lens worth and is it a cood match >?? thanks
Okay what about this?! Nikon D5200 or the Canon 5D MarkII? And why?! The reason I ask is because I have an opportunity to sale My D5200 and pick up a Canon 5D Mark II. Also, what are some fair prices to buy/sale each camera? Thanks so much!
Hi Matt, i'm an amateur and i am planning to trade/sell my Canon 450D and get Canon 550D. But just last week i saw a secondhand Nikon D700 (that's why i'm looking for videos about Nikon D700). but you said Nikon D700 has no video function on it :( and the Canon 550D has it. right on man. Totally agree. The people that hate on the other brands are freaking annoying snobs. I shoot with a 5d mk.2 and 7D, both great, i use canon because its what i am used to . nothing wrong with either, both are fantastic. It all has to do with preference. and you dont have to shit on the other to make yourself feel better lol
i never said that the 5d filmed nay movie or tv show which you would know if you actually could read but then again my point that i was trying to get across is that i think the d700 is better even though it does not have video and that video is not that big of a thing for me :P
Aaaah, i'm glad you chose the D700 at the end =) lol I love nikon, but i have to admit that the 5d MK2 is great, and the video is clearly huge compared with the D700 which has no video. But by looking at the design of the camera, the canon is ugly, and the D700 is simply the perfection! U said that in ur video and it's cool, that's exactly why i chose the D700 : i don't really care about video and, in photo, handling means pleasure... so i go for nikon =)
both awsome cams but ment for diffent things it really comes down to the photogopher. because a d700 does not make you a better photogopher then a 5d mark2 photogopher
PS: Nikon D3200, with 3rd Party Battery Grip, 2 ENEL14 batteries and a 35mm F/1.8g DX Lens weight less (940grams) than the D700 with a single battery (1050grams). The D700 is built to last.
@kbudiarto - So no response to the fact that the d700 is still more expensive, or that it has nearly half the resolution, .... Just about video? Really? :-P You do realize that the 5D Mk II has been used to shoot music videos, tv shows (Including "HOUSE"), and movies, right? I suppose all those people could have bought a d700 and just shot pictures and made a nice little slideshow. *LOL* You don't have to shoot video all the time. It's an added feature and still cheaper than the d700.
one of the lenses down there is a nikon af-s 60 2.8 ed macro. he wans 300 for it. I owned a fujjifilm camera and still have it,i have no idea how this d700 works.lol guess i should read the manual
@jeffillinois looks like you are not an action/sports shooter. most ppl will never use the hd video feature anyway. tell us at least you shoot it in video mode more than 50% then i'll have to kiss your foot.
The 5D Mk2 does better filming than any other video camera in its range. Even HD professional cameras aren't that much better Many filmmakers actually use DSLRs like the 5D to film movies and shows. For example, some segments of House was filmed using the Mk2
I just got both of these this year (2022) 😁. Both are dirt cheap even in mint condition and shutter counts under 10k. Lucky me!!! 😍
Awesome! Enjoy!!
I just bought a 5d2 with only 17k pictures. Not a scratch or blemish. I simply love taking pictures with it!
Are you still enjoying both?
I bought the D700 a year and a half ago and have never regretted it. I am still blow away by the imagine quality of this camera.
12 years on, I’m still blown away
why is the video stretched horizontally ?!!
I have NO idea
Because it's a Canon. Probably was making fun of it.
@caesar09 it was based on me using and testing both cameras, and it is also quite a well known difference between the two.
How on earth can anyone watch this and think it's bias? Here are the pluses and minuses of each, they're both great, whatever you already have you should stick with. @westcoasthaase No, I didn't. I said that the Nikon has a DX crop mode, Canon doesn't. Both use a 35mm sensor.
I agree with caesar09, i think its ridiculous how you said that the d700 is more durable. They are both magnesium alloy bodies, they are both very solidly build. They will both hold up perfectly well with abuse.
@bwinn10 I agree. Your point stirred something in me, I am about to upload a video response too.
@Tuiteles all three are lovely cameras. What options do you feel crop bodies limit?
Just bought a Nikon D3200 about 2 months ago with 18-55mm & 55-200mm kit lens for $750 inc 2 extra batteries. Just found a used D700 with less than 4000 actuations for $1000. @redteg1 True, is not the same magnification. I was showing 100% crop - which is comparable.
for the high iso results, if the canon's image was scaled down to the nikon's, the noise would be the same.
Well now that's a good question... I would say look at the exif data... if they will let you put in a card, take a picture & upload it to your laptop, you should be able to find the info.

@NDSCollector I'd still choose Nikon - although impossible to be impartial at this stage.
2020, Matt became a Leica-SonyBoi ;)
Pogo Kilogramm 🥱
Still here 2022. Just bought a d700 do see what the fuss was all about. My last Nikon was a d90.
@Breezy69Bacs yes, the entry-level D5000. Owned by people who still don't know if they will be photographers or cameramen.
I just bought a 5d2 a month ago! I LOVE it!
@mjboyofsanluisaurora what do you own now?
The tool is the tool... you have to know your tool... to love your tool... of course there are diferences... there are brands... but you are the one who makes the tool worth it... like on film industry... All worried about a couple of grams of weight like your drug dealers. You all seem to forget how heavy actual gear used to be
@DavidHeatonPhoto Prices will always drop, and replacements will always come. You just have to jump in!
Still a good video in 2021 : )
@001FJ Yep - a great camera.
@mettalliko what lens u use on the canon for video?
@4670sayan The 5Dii is better than a lot of camcorders.
Walked into a pawn shop yesterday.spotted a d700. He wants 1100.oo with a nikon lens and a backpack camera bag. Is that a good buy ?
And to answer your question, No, ... not a big sports photographer. I shoot weddings and portraits mostly, but the video feature has come in handy NUMEROUS times.. And actually, if you only count the amount of time the shutter is open as being the time comparison, ... Yes... :-P The sensor has certainly seen more video than stills..
@thecrazygardener haha - Great advice to go out and shoot - but you haven't met many pros! around half are total gear heads
A sad truth . great gear does not make good content
Which one would you take if you didn't have any nikon stuff already and you could pick a hand full of lenses for the camera of your choice?
I prefer Nikon color-science overall. And of course also the ISO performances.
Why do people get so angry in commenting. LOL. Nice review. Nice lawnmower in the background haha. I wish the battery didn't die when you were comparing frames per second. :(
The Nikon costs more than the Canon, but Canon has high def video. This is a no-brainer. Unless you don't mind spending $500 more without getting video. And you simply must have the "better handling" of the Nikon.
the Nikon's dynamic range is better. I own both still today.
@leo140485 Thanks for comment - yes silly about the battery, I apologise. It was not my camera - and I forgot to check.
I shoot outdoors mostly, so that test is valuable.
@estudio100rafa Thanks for the comment.

@waseem5420288 and u're right, 5D mk2 : 9 focus points
D700 : 51 focus points and crazy speed and precision !!!
@thatnikonguy Nice video I'm still a crop camera user (40d). Good to see imparcial/objective comparisson :)
@JD95 i think is personal decision,i own top line canon and nikon and i love both
both have excellent lenses and there is nothing to compare, canon has excellent lenses, for example canon can't beat 14-24mm 2.8 or 24-70mm 2.8 these 2 lenses area a hair sharper than canon, and i love the new 70-200 from canon than the 70-200 vr
i think is personal opinion,i shoot wedding with nikon and portraits with canon,i can wait to shoot with the new d4 and d800e
but the thing is have fun shooting!!!
@adriaansmit81 well I wasn't looking at video primarily, comparing as the two top small body DSLRs from canon & nikon for photography.
@Breezy69Bacs not the 700.
Wait until the d700 gets an update... Then we're talkin'!
Hi, i baught it. Its got and he threw in a nikkor 24-120 mm. he also threw in 4 filters/2 battery back. the high speed memory card and a high end camera backpack. MrTactiCALi Canon 5D MarkII
6D is better and cheaper than 5D ii
@thatnikonguy OK than u buy 5D II. Who stops you???
Yes! Especially if it's a good lens & has under 50,000 actuations.
At the end... you can do photography with the 2 cameras...
How can you compare these two while the 5d is used by professional filmers and the d700 doesnt even have a film function?
Hi Matt,
i'm an amateur and i am planning to trade/sell my Canon 450D and get Canon 550D. But just last week i saw a secondhand Nikon D700 (that's why i'm looking for videos about Nikon D700). but you said Nikon D700 has no video function on it :( and the Canon 550D has it.
What is you best advice about this? the Canon 550D is brand new and the Nikon D700 is just secondhand. Hope you can help me asap (so i can get the nikon if ever) :)
thanks,
duke
right on man. Totally agree. The people that hate on the other brands are freaking annoying snobs. I shoot with a 5d mk.2 and 7D, both great, i use canon because its what i am used to . nothing wrong with either, both are fantastic. It all has to do with preference. and you dont have to shit on the other to make yourself feel better lol
i think the nikon has much better image quality... the thing is its results are more creamy....
Seriously. I don't have my d700 yet, but I will in a few months!
i never said that the 5d filmed nay movie or tv show which you would know if you actually could read but then again my point that i was trying to get across is that i think the d700 is better even though it does not have video and that video is not that big of a thing for me :P

@westcoasthaase So is 5D
that is so biased. it's more durable. how is that a fact?
that's just an opinion.
you can't make a wild claim like that.
@TheLittleWorldofGaz cheers
This comparative is "bad". There is a "favorite" before... hmmm i dont like this. Is not neutral... Is bad.
If they are fast lenses (2.8 or lower). Grab them! If nothing else, you could sell them... maybe to me! :)
ps-how do i find out how many actuations its got ?
They are both made with a magnesium alloy body, pretty sure it's not a well known fact "Nikon" guy.
I Think he used the Nikon D5100 but I could be wrong
Very Pro Comparsion and Honest. Keep Up!!
It's an f4.0... but it's still worth over $1,000! Go do a search at Amazon... if you decide it's too much for you, let ME know! Wow!
Are you on fb? I really want to see this gear you're picking up!
Why
You realize that the hebrew word for photography in the intro is backwards?
I'm shocked The NikonGuy picked the Nikon. Lol. c'mon maaaaaannnn!
both awsome cams but ment for diffent things it really comes down to the photogopher. because a d700 does not make you a better photogopher then a 5d mark2 photogopher
Theres nothing between them, choose whichever you prefer.
yada yada apples oranges argument without end, nikon boys vs canon boys. pissing contest no clear winner just enjoy your camera. thats all that count
wow best review comment ever
I liked the color better on the D700 it also seemed like the noise was very similar between the two couldn't tell the difference.
Having a heavy bias towards Nikon, one cannot do a fair review comparison video.
@TheDeeb97 Hes wearing the Canon with a strap and the Nikon without the strap, and you says he towards Nikon !!!! :(
But in the video you said it was a dx format! But it is FX No biggie
lol the battery died on the canon. Btw, I think Nikon is superior in fps, Canon in video and resolution, no other major difference.
I owned a fujjifilm camera and still have it,i have no idea how this d700 works.lol guess i should read the manual
bokeh looks better on the nikon?? seriously?? it's sharper?! bokeh is not supposed to be sharp! and next time get both pics in focus!
Anamorphic went wrong...
Love it
you better use letter box than strecht it
@jeffillinois looks like you are not an action/sports shooter. most ppl will never use the hd video feature anyway. tell us at least you shoot it in video mode more than 50% then i'll have to kiss your foot.
The 5D Mk2 does better filming than any other video camera in its range. Even HD professional cameras aren't that much better
Many filmmakers actually use DSLRs like the 5D to film movies and shows. For example, some segments of House was filmed using the Mk2
So what. It hurts that Nikon is better?
Buying a DSLR for video is like buying a camcorder for pictures
Lmao it’s funny reading this 10 years later
@@zachsteiner Oh, how times change...
