I respect the lives lost here. 💐 I also appreciate the fact that you've granted us viewers a front row seat to this ride that has been demolished for quite some time. Thank you for feeding the curiosity so fully! 💐🥂
There were 4 different incidents over its 30 year lifespan. The ride needed a refurbishment. The park instead replaced the boats and did minor repairs and touch ups. The main issue was the lack of concern over the age of the ride. Water rides need constant maintenance and service intervals. These rides are money pits. Parks buy rides that can have a high rider per hr. This ride had a very high rider per hr. The only problem is the costs don’t start getting ridiculous until they hit 5 years old. It then becomes an expensive mess. I can see why a lackadaisical attitude surrounded this ride because it was so common to have problems and breakdowns.
Just learned about this. I'm from the US and many of our rapid water rides have a conveyer belt system that has a black rubber mat exactly like a treadmill. The exposed slats seem very strange and dangerous
I just watched another video that stated that the park designed the ride themselves; it wasn’t built by a contracted company like most rides are (I think that’s the right term) and so there were many features that were not industry standard. Your comment is very good food for thought, though - I’m from the US myself and never would have thought that anything but actual treadmill-like conveyor belts were used in rides like this.
Both Disney World's Kali River Rapids and Disneyland's Grizzly River Run have slat style systems very similar to this ride. However you can see at 3:15 it looks like they only installed every 3rd slat. That was the problem. I also live in the US and I've actually never seen one like a treadmill rubber mat so it's interesting you said that.
This ride was built and desighnded very well but they didn't very little maintaining the water pump was broken so not enough water the staff were told about the problems on the morning of the accident and the staff was brand new and had no idea what she was doing...it was criminal negligence on the part of the maintance crew and park manager...it was 100%not the rides or designers fault...pure lack of maintaining it.
@@Heavens-Humanaterian-Army The untrained young operator waited 7 seconds before hitting the emergency stop button. That's what killed them, the 7 second delay.
@@Heavens-Humanaterian-Army To a point I agree. The ride should have been made to enter into a fault state when a water pump failed. Having bean counters build rides is never a good idea.
There is an amazing detail shown on this video. The mount spacing for the wood planks that make up the conveyer are sufficient to create a fairly flat surface IF they were all installed but they clearly are not. The planks were installed every 4th mount. Had they all been in place at the time of the accident I don't think the spacing would allow for any size person to fall through. Maybe a limb but it would have at least limited the scope of injury. I also doubt if the boat would have even capsized in the first place if planks were not missing. There would not be sufficient space between the beams to grab and submerge the boat. Heck, maybe it was even tested as a failure mode by the designer. My sympathy to the families and friends of those involved.
I see what you mean. There is plenty of mounts to create a much flatter surface but there is only a plank installed on every third mount. It even almost looks like boards #2 and #3 have been cut off
They were originally all there but the conveyer belt was made steeper than the default layout from the manufacturer so they were removed to make it grab on better
They actually removed every third slat to make the belt lighter as it was having issues tripping out. This was one of the contributing factors as it allowed the conveyor to grab the boat and pull it under. I just finished reading the report.
Really!? The only reason I ever get on any ride, or participate in any activity for that matter, is because I expect - nay! DEMAND sir - that I die horribly in a mechanical accident...
YES AND MY 6ft+ DAD HIT HIS HEAD ON IT IN 1988.... He was lucky in hindsight. This ride was always somewhat dangerous, but it was also one of the most enjoyable dreamworld rides. I went back on it in 2004 and 2011.
I rode this ride back in 2006, loved it... but after all the info that has come out about it. I feel lucky to be alive. I was a young kid back then, I'm a 26 year old man now and feel sad for those families that died! 😢
Can’t deny it was a good ride. The fun of it was basically who got wet and who didn’t because you can’t control the raft, or it’s spinning. Dreamworld was always neglectful. I smashed my face on the back of the seat in front on the log ride when it hit the water, and had a bloody nose, and the staff’s only concern was shuffling me off past the people waiting in the queue to go next (looking at me with horrified faces).
Just watching this you can see the truth that Dreamland failed to do even a cursory Risk Assessment Analysis when they cobbled this dangerous horror together. Remember they didn’t buy off the shelf. This wasn’t an Intamin ride. They looked at Intamin’s and said “we can build that ourselves, in house!”. Just from watching this video, that first cave/tunnel is way too low with too many projections downwards for use on an unpredictable water ride that doesn’t have clear controlled and calculated pathing. And the lift hill! OMG! Why would you let human beings within 100’ of such a horrifying device. Look at that lift hill. It was almost purpose designed to grab people, haul them underwater and mangle them like a farmers harvester. I’m just stunned at how anybody looked at that thing and said it was a good idea. That lift hill is what killed those park goers. Looking at it you can easily see how.
OMG I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed the cave height! That's RIDICULOUSLY low! Cedar Point is my home park and Thunder Canyon is an Intamin build as well. Their lift hill is at the beginning in clear view of the operating platform. It also features that classic Intamin-style 'yoga mat' design cover for its conveyor. No obstructive caves or overhangs on the ride either. Shame.
@@lilmoosic The yoga mat, or as I think of it, giant supermarket conveyor, that Intamin uses is meant to reduce the chances it can grab someone. At 3:38 that's the view of the people who died. The vacant raft in which they collided is directly in front of them. Their raft collided, the front part lifted and overturned. As the conveyor is still running, their raft continued to flip upside down and the passengers were caught in the still running conveyor. 2 of them were killed by the conveyor, other 2 were drowned..
No, no one drowned. All 4 were crushed. The men directly unto the belts. The women between the belt and the raft. The coraner report showed everyone had crushing injuries amd no water in lungs. After the index, its the first pages of the report.
Seriously puts me off going on these "water themed" rides. If always had a fear of then tipping or flipping over if you go down a drop in them. Now knowing people died it really puts me off now
I went on this ride in 2005 as a 12 year old and we got about 50 metres from the point of the accident and as a child 11 years before this accident happened, I said this looks like it could flip.. still gives me goose bumps the 12 year old me felt uneasy and unsafe and predicted what the ride could outcome before it happened.. it makes me uneasy that I had been to this theme park multiple times and on multiple times they had experienced faulty incidents. Used to be one of my favourite theme parks, now I hate them, because of this incident
3:01 It was at this point here where the accident took place. The belt system ahead is obviously meant to take them up, the day of the accident, the water level was 3 times lower then what it is here. One of the pumps failed. Even when I went on this ride in 2015, I said to my mum, does this seam safe? Absolutely terrible what happened 😢
It was actually the other end of the belt at 3:42 extremely sad. It flipped because there was an empty raft stopped in front of it. When it hit the empty raft, the belt kept moving and the raft full of people tipped.
Let me speculate if I may. The main water lift pump had overheated earlier in the day as reported by patrons and the news reports, say the lift pump overheated again and was not performing correctly, causing the water level to drop rapidly right as the empty pod ahead of the doomed one was exiting the conveyor. This could cause that pod to become beached, leading to the collision. If you look in the video to the right you'll see an extremely powerful water outlet just adjacent to the accident location. This zone will begin to drain first. Just a thought, as a structural engineer this re-affirms my duty to ensure the safety of all who use my structures.
@Lionel Hutz Wow, forgot that I had posted this. There you go. It's often the most innocuous things that cause catastrophe with machines like this. That gap in the belt is huge and everything is exposed how was this thing even made? the gap is big enough to fit people and most of the rubbber boat things and will let it flip over. on our ride if you hit another boat you dont flip its a flat rubber mat.
SodaGumX i was thinking the same thing, it should be a flat surface so nothing could fall through. But in saying that the ride has been there for decades with no issue up until now, terrible
The gap size was half this but they removed every other slat to reduce the weight thereby reduce strain on the system. Very bad idea. As you rightfully said this gave room for the people to fall throw and the boat would not have caught and flipped this way otherwise. They would have just bumped up but not go inverted.
I hate when people come up with stupid lies on TH-cam comments, and this definitely sounds like a lie but, I was at dreamworld on the day this happened, I was lining up for the Madagascar rollercoaster when suddenly the park got shut down. We were kinda confused as nobody really knew what was up but still, I feel like that could’ve been me because we were making plans to go on that ride later in the day. Scary stuff, heart goes out to those families.
Most places would just use a big rubber belt that takes up rafts. With the design on this one it was only a matter of time before something went horribly wrong. Obviously there was other factors, but that non stop movement of big wooden planks being separated that far from one another is just asking for trouble. An engineer should have never signed off on that design.
Apparently the maintenance team removed some of the wooden slats to reduce stress on the chains which drive it. That was against the manufacturer’s specifications, and it meant that it was now possible for the raft to be caught between the slats, which is ultimately what made it flip. A terrible act of stupidity and a disgusting lack of consideration for safety. All that mattered was that the old ride was working, regardless of its poor operating conditions.
Though I'm all for the closure of this ride after what happened I still miss it. This ride was a staple of mine every time I visited Dreamworld. Such a shame.
After watching several different videos on this ride I have to ask, did this raft not have restraints? All of the similar barge style rides I've ever been on had waist belts similar to airplane restraints.
Apparently the maintenance team removed some of the wooden slats to reduce stress on the chains which drive it. A terrible act of stupidity and a disgusting lack of consideration for safety. All that mattered was that the old ride was working, regardless of its poor operating conditions.
I don’t understand why these rides are even designed like this? Obviously the fatalities were due to the boat capsizing which couldn’t be prevented but what if someone slipped/jumped in wouldn’t they also be crushed by the machinery? How is this in any way safe?
It really doesn't take that much power for a moving mechanism to break through human bones that are stuck in between it. It could have ripped them apart with half the power even less.
Nah it was a good choice to demolish it out of respect for them. Plus people would be too scared to ride it now knowing what could happen if the boat flips again.
When I just got back from Queensland and heard about this is was so devastated and nearly crying I went on this ride like 10 times since I loved it soooo much and now the fact that it killed 4 people I can't even discribe how sad I am!!:(
THEY HAD ONE AT SIX FLAGS OVER TEXAS THAT DID THE SAME THING! It had started up the conveyor and the weight wasn't even and flipped over backward and killed some people. very sad - they never reopened that ride..
3:01 me thinking their the family that died on the conveyor belt: HOLY SH MAN THEIR GONNA DIE AND THIS IS THE INCIDENT THAT THE FAMILY RECO- oh wait nvm they good
Im lost too as to how such a melow ride could cause death. What a horrible experience to go through or even witness people getting caught n that converyor belt...
I went on that ride once Glad I never went back on a second time I mean what do you expect it's a ride from the 80s Even my mum rode on it before we did together It was her favourite ride but I'm glad that incident happened otherwise alot more people could have died from it after falling into even more disrepair
It was a really good ride, don't know why the staff weren't on the watch more, and when I rode their was nothing wrong with it, in fact it was pretty good.
The deaths didn't only have to so with the staff. The theme park cobbled together it's own ride, without basic safety procedure or testing. It was a death trap to begin with.
5imon 5ays yes this was filmed 10th october I have been meaning to post it for the last couple weeks but posted last night to give people a general idea of the ride and conveyer belt
+Jessica Pape someone commented earlier that when it flipped they were thrown out and ultimately trapped in between and went under the belt while the other two people were stuck in the flipped raft being - but the post was deleted several posts have been. ?
People are saying that it hit another ride infront of them which made them flip onto the conveyer belt or inbetween it. The end part of this video shows the conveyor belt and shows this ride hitting the ride infront but for some reason theirs didnt flip like the ones who tragically passed, did. Still find it unbelievable. It was a cruisier ride than the others.... RIP to the unlucky tourists who had no way of escaping death
Tabathia Gaskin I hope so I love this ride and dont want it to get shut down but what happened yesterday is so terrible I just wouldn't feel right going on it again.

@@Arcadora No, it was caused by a water pump failure and sudden water level drop causing raft 6 to get jammed on the support rails. Raft 5 coming down the conveyor being occupied then ramming into it and lifting, and vertically sitting ito a gap at the end of the conveyor. An auto safety water level switch to shut the conveyor dow instantly on water level drop would have save their lives and should have been in place. The issue begins with bad design and inept enginering approval. The staff training was inadequate and the emergency stop if activated would have saved their lives, but automatic interlocks are far better than relying on humans after the peril begins. Raft 6 had being jammed for a minute and with proper staff training the Emergency stop could have been activated in this time would have saved them also. The main console stop button used when the rafts colided was a system shutdown that took 8 seconds. The Emergency stop would have stopped it in 2, but they needed to be pushed before the collision. After watching several different videos on this ride I have to ask, did this raft not have restraints? All of the similar barge style rides I've ever been on had waist belts similar to airplane restraints.
Yea this did have very thick velcro waist straps
I do wish I could go back to before everything that happened
Very sad about the previous accident on this ride! Pretty cool in that each of the rafts float independent, so no two trips will be exactly the same.
I loved that ride, such a classic. And I'm glad I can still enjoy the experience here on video
I loved it too. Sad it ended in such tragedy but it also carries so many happy memories for a lot of us
May I use this footage in a video on this accident? I will credit your channel!
Of course 🙂
@@Arcadora thank you!
Wow. That conveyer belt looks like a death trap. Fuck that.
So it was like falling into a combine harvester or something?
I don’t understand why these rides are even designed like this? Obviously the fatalities were due to the boat capsizing which couldn’t be prevented but what if someone slipped/jumped in wouldn’t they also be crushed by the machinery? How is this in any way safe?
You can see the massive gaps in the slats and the mountings are there for more, what is that all about?
Murphy's Law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"
It's a scary way to die. Me and my dad a while ago had yearly passes and this was always the first ride that we would go on
I just have to say, that is an ADORABLE picture 😊
that conveyor is criminal
Who else was fealing really anxious and creeped out while the raft was nearing the top of the hill?
Horror way to go, they would have been ripped apart on the conveyer belt, hopefully it was over quickly.
Did this rid get demolished after the accident
Yes It did. The foundations of it are still in place but apart from that its gone. There is a new attraction being build right next to it.
did they not turn it of instantly after they saw it flip or wat
They should have turned it off as soon as the carriage in front got stuck
BMW S1000RR tgere was a new worker and they got scared and didn’t know what to do
You'd think odd resistance would have tripped the shutoff
Why would the conveyor belt rip them apart? Why is something that powerful on this ride???
it needs to be strong enough to lift 6 grown adults plus the carriage so easily over a 1000kg of force
@Lionel Hutz That’s what everyone’s saying
It really doesn't take that much power for a moving mechanism to break through human bones that are stuck in between it. It could have ripped them apart with half the power even less.
When you see how exposed the mechanisms are on the ramp it makes you wonder how it didn't happen sooner. 😢
I loved that ride man
One of the best rides ever but so sad what happened to those 4 people.
I really miss this ride.
same I wish they just made it safer instead of demoliting it
Nah it was a good choice to demolish it out of respect for them. Plus people would be too scared to ride it now knowing what could happen if the boat flips again.
I learned the history of this ride from a PhantomStrider video, what a sad downfall this park had.
First cave entrance looked like you probably had to duck.
Nah, it was quiet high
This was posted the exact day the incident happened 😢
When I just got back from Queensland and heard about this is was so devastated and nearly crying I went on this ride like 10 times since I loved it soooo much and now the fact that it killed 4 people I can't even discribe how sad I am!!:(
Boldie 600 yea I was the same I went on it many times I loved it
THEY HAD ONE AT SIX FLAGS OVER TEXAS THAT DID THE SAME THING!
It had started up the conveyor and the weight wasn't even and flipped over backward and killed some people. very sad - they never reopened that ride..
Duchess Moffit they are closing this ride for good I think
6 flags killed 7 or 8 in Haunted Castle fire, too.
May those family members Rest In Peace.
I went on that ride in 2012
The fact that the incident happened on the same day this was recorded is scary
That’s what I thought lol we could of just seen a death but it happened to be a ride or 2 after
This was released the same day of the accident? Were you actually there prior to the incident on that day? That must have been surreal.
What makes this more fkd up is the fact there originally were two extra slats inbetween the gaps, they removed the 2nd and 3rd after 1989.
The gaps between were only 16cm. Changed to 72!!
The issue was due to the weight of the conveyor causing the chain to wear, they did only remove every 2nd but still caused issues
I went on this ride when I was little. It devastates me that others died and I was alright. My prayers go to those people and their families.
really is a shame it had to close RIP river rapids ride 😥
Why the spacing?
It appears this ride was dangerous in more ways than one.
This video was posted the exact day the incident happened! 😢

me thinking their the family that died on the conveyor belt: HOLY SH MAN THEIR GONNA DIE AND THIS IS THE INCIDENT THAT THE FAMILY RECO- oh wait nvm they good
It was one of the best rides
Anyone else watching this in 2021
Yup
I guess it flipped and they couldn't unbuckle? But how were they ejected - I'm confused - it is very unfortunate And sad accident.
Bree ridge well thank you for clearing my confusions up. Seems like such a mellow ride - terrible
Where did that response go?
bree ridge did you delete your list?
Im lost too as to how such a melow ride could cause death. What a horrible experience to go through or even witness people getting caught n that converyor belt...
jason Polk I don't think this has a harness, if I'm correct? Apparently the water pumps failed, lowering the water level and that's how it flipped?
I went on that ride once
Glad I never went back on a second time
I mean what do you expect it's a ride from the 80s
Even my mum rode on it before we did together
It was her favourite ride but I'm glad that incident happened otherwise alot more people could have died from it after falling into even more disrepair
What part of the ride did the accident happen on?
About 3:40 I believe
It was a really good ride, don't know why the staff weren't on the watch more, and when I rode their was nothing wrong with it, in fact it was pretty good.
Yea I loved it. Was our fave ride!
The deaths didn't only have to so with the staff. The theme park cobbled together it's own ride, without basic safety procedure or testing. It was a death trap to begin with.
i was about to comment imagine this happened in October 25th 2016 but i saw the time in the description 💀
Did you upload this before the accident?
Yes only a couple of hours before we heard about it. It had been filmed 10 days before the accident
like this sort of ride popeye and blutos rip saw barges on island of adventure in orlando was my favorite
I can smell the water watching this video
this was published yest day when the them 4 people got killed OMG.
5imon 5ays yes this was filmed 10th october I have been meaning to post it for the last couple weeks but posted last night to give people a general idea of the ride and conveyer belt
This was the ride that killed 4 people? How were they ejected
jason Polk i was thinking how the fuck can someone die in this ride?
I can see how someone could get hurt in the water, as the convery belt would be like a meat ginder... But the ejecting part i'm curious about.
RIP to the unlucky tourists who had no way of escaping death
...
Could they just take away the conveyer belt and have a different exit to the ride??
Tabathia Gaskin I hope so I love this ride and dont want it to get shut down but what happened yesterday is so terrible I just wouldn't feel right going on it again.
Arcadora to late it has already been planned to be taken down for good thats what the health and safety people said
They are getting it closed for good and turned into a memorial for them but they have not even given a good enough reason as to why this accident occurred.
@@dollyvuitton the top raft was caught b/c water was too low. Conveyor kept going even tho it SHOULD have cut off due to odd/excessive resistance (as in, not balanced)
I only got on this once in 2016 and I thought it was a great ride but it’s dreamworlds fault of what happened. They didn’t train their staff to know what to do in an emergency
i miss this ride sm
Just think what would happen if you fell into that conveyor belt, they would have been crushed if they didn't drown first, damn
I did not enter thunder river rapids ride
I too have been on this ride and it wasn't at all scary so with woe I am highly surprised this incident occurred as it was such a good ride
xxhannah2434xx I went on this ride to it was a freak accident
Pay up Dreamworld/Ardent Leisure! Motherfuckers only cared about money not lives
That is why they are called risk assessments was never done for this ride the people died a horrible death
I was on their for my birthday 22nd Oct I was to afraid to take the other roller-coaster even the Madagascar one until we found scavenged our way to river rapids we walked in people were drying them selves in this weird hearing tube the line was empty with wannabe teens when it was our time we sat on their seatbelts were loose and rapid felt wonky it could easily tip over there were pirate animtronics and having a good time with these water bumps then the escalator pulled us up with no problem
That tragedy could of happened to anyone its scary no one realised how dangerous that ride actually was
That was one day Before the accident happened
Damn this thing looks so unsafe.. I mean.. if you have an amusement park then at least be sure to make your rides safe and not risk peoples life wtf
CrAzyyChiickY it was safe for 30 years...
@@timpanda4820 until it minced up 4 people....
It suckd this was my favourite ride ever
Luckily no one died this time
A simple water level safety switch to auto shutdown the conveyor would have saved 4 lives.
There was one. I think it was operator error as it was one of their first few days on the job
The staff did not realise the danger coming.
@@adrianfewster8391 www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-18/dreamworld-fatal-accident-ride-had-broken-down-inquest-told/9871898 I understand it was caused by a pump but in regards to the emergency button it was user error as the staff member didnt know what that button was
@@Arcadora Yes, however the system should have been designed to shut the conveyor down on water level drop automatically, which was easy to do. This did not require anyone to think or act.
@@Arcadora sounds like company error for not properly training their teenage staff on huge engineered rides. Why were such young, inexperienced staff expected to operate this? I’ve seen better training given to janitors
Remember riding this at Dreamworld years ago before the accident. My favourite ride if i’m honest, real shame what happened, condolences to the families.
cant belive this turned into a meat grinder
little did they know the ride would take 4 lives that very day…. Gives me shivers
Oh I didn’t know the video was shot the very same day
In America 🇺🇸 we have the same rides and but our conveyer system has a rubber mar instead of the horrible looking rails conveyer system in Australia. Bless the people who lost their lives
Tbh this makes me tear up this was my fav ride now it’s gone it’s to sad
Those poor people! Such a shame that a ride meant to bring fun & happiness to families turned into a death trap. 😔 Can’t imagine the pain they went through looking at that end part with the conveyor belt. I probably shouldn’t of looked but curiosity got the best of me. That’s probably why most of us are here.
May the victims RIP 💐 ❤️
It was made to make money. If it was made for fun and happiness they would have tested it first and ran proper risk assessments.
People died on the conveyor
Makes ya sick watching this.
Lucky it wasn't u who died
