    Well, I work in IT and I can tell that at least where I live, nobody cares about the formal education in this industry. I myself only have a high school diploma. That may just be the Central Europe though...

      Yes, in the private industry nobody cares. However, if you want to get into academia or research you do need formal education. You don't go into these areas for the money though, you go there because you want to do science. Although I've heard that you can get paid quite a lot in the private sector if you have a PhD and work as a consultant for example. I have a Masters degree and that gives you absolutely nothing in the private sector. (Central Europe)
