    Extreme, non-fisheye, wide angles are one of my favorite topics. My first true love, many, many years ago, was a 20mm Takumar lens for my Pentax. I used it almost exclusively. For me, it was great for street photography. As you pointed out, I loved how I could capture people from three or four feet away without them knowing they were in the shot. I believed, by being almost on top of my subject---subjects in candid moments---it gave my pictures of people a sense of immediacy and intimacy . . . almost a kind of urgency. It did close to the same for my portraits.
    No long ago, I bought a Fuji 10mm to 24mm zoom for my X-E2 . . . it's brought me back to my first love. I've had to force myself not to use it all the time . . . it's an old addiction, returned. I still have that Takumar, even though I don't shoot film anymore. I don't know why, I just can't bear parting with it. One can't dump a first love, a first love dumps him.

    Super wide angle lenses are never for every day use. They are for special effects type shots. Ken Rockwell has a nice explanatory page on the subject.

    I own the Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5mm F2.0 super wide angle lens for two years and use it with my mft cameras. Equivalent 15 mm are not extremely wide. I am very satisfied. - The 7Artisans lens you presented can only be judged if you know what crop factor to consider. I think 7Artisans are lagging a bit. The Laowa lens is smaller, lighter, and with f2.0 three stops faster than the one from 7Artisans.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think you can compare your Laowa and this 7Artisans, because these are two completely different lenses. Your lens is for Micro Four Thirds and the 7Artisans 9mm is for Full Frame, which by the way I mention in the video too. Your lens is not nearly as wide as the 7Artisans 9mm. You'd need something like 4.5mm for Micro Four Thirds to be as wide as a 9mm Full Frame lens. No point in comparing apple and orange.

    Hi Matti, nice image at 5:17, I sometimes use my 14mm Lens for street photography, but even a 14mm often gets too wide. Have you tried the Laowa 9mm 5.6 ? The Laowa 9mm is smaller and lighter, so the Laowa would more often have a space in a camera bag. The Laowa 9mm have a close focus of 12cm.

    You may well consider this "apples-to-oranges" but I love my Laowa 6mm f/2 (MFT, so 12mm EFL/122° AoV and rectilinear--the 7Artisans has a 132° AoV). I got that lens as there were cases when even my Leica 8-18 (16-36 EFL) wasn't wide enough for the scene. Additional selling points for the Laowa "Zero D" (well, very minimal distortion other than keystoning, of course) are filter compatibility (although it helps to use a 58-72 step-up and 72mm filters to avoid vignetting) and contacts for EXIF (plus aperture's controlled in-camera but it's manual focus). Of course, no ultra-wide is going to spend a lot of time mounted as it's just not appropriate for most shots, but it's nice to have. It'll be interesting to see how often I use it once the "newness" wears off. I wondered if that would be a thing with my Oly 60mm Macro but after a couple of years, it's still one of my go-to lenses (120mm is much more versatile than 12mm for my work).

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. Why not, B&W is always a great option, but I have to say it's probably more about the photos and not so much about the lens. In my opinion, that is.

    I own a 16-35mm FF lens and I hardly ever use it cuz I can't manage to fill the frame below 24mm. Don't kid yourselves, this 9mm lens is a very, very niche curio.

      @@mattisulanto In the U.K. if someone says something is “too wide” they are stating that it would be more useful if it was less wide! I feel you enjoyed the lens because it was unusually wide and both know there are tons of less wide options, so this is what makes the lens different. Hopefully you will agree?

  • @garreswe
    @garreswe ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm interested in ultra wide but the 5.6 isn't very exciting. If it was at least 4.0 if be much happier, I've seen the difference when shooting in low light.
    I think I'll go for Laowa's 12mm/2.8 because it's so much faster and the 9mm-12mm difference isn't super big.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference is the same as between 35mm and 26mm. It’s a significant difference, but if you need 12mm and not 9mm, then the difference means nothing, of course.
