This is one of those "ultimate festival songs" and the crowd always reenact the video that goes with this song, the circle pogo is a big part of the video and the crowd always does it.
The singer often even joins in and stands in the middle of that circle to sing the song, it's quite impressive to see, and total fun.
De Staat is an entertainment powerhouse in the Netherlands, their concerts are always kick ass, and indeed his stage presence is pure power.

I remember seeing them live for the first time at a local pub long time ago. They weren't Very well known yet. But the amount of energy in that little basement pub was insane.

Band from my hometown. Proud of them and they are invited on almost every festival in the Netherlands. And there are a lot of them I can tell. Furthermore, their agenda is loaded. There is a lot of great stuff in all kinds of rock in the Netherlands. Giving you some more rabbit holes: The Gathering, Within Temptation, Navarone, Epica, Direct, Kensington and so on. Dig in and enjoy Eric. 🎤🎧🎸🎹

Saw them support Biffy Clyro, a must review, in Copenhagen Sept 22. What surprise. Fabulous. Should be up there. Charismatic lead, thumping beat and poss the best support I've seen.

De Staat is one of the greatest live bands around at the moment. They can do these big stadium gigs, but they are equally amazing in small venues. And they will make time for each and every fan afterwards for a chat, a picture or an autograph. Really down to earth, awesome and genuinely nice guys. Plus their discography is insanely diverse. They veer from big pompous crowd energisers such as Witch Doctor to very intimate, beautiful melancholy songs, to QOTSA style southern rock, to electronic rock/pop, to indie Radiohead vibes, to tongue-in-cheek bubblegum pop. But through it all they manage to keep sounding like De Staat. Truly one of the most underrated bands around. Big props for reacting to them, hopefully we will see some more De Staat reactions (Kitty Kitty, Devil's Blood, Peace Love & Profit, Peptalk, to name but a few).

I disagree it's satirical. Don't forget the Netherlands has a VERY big EDM scene aswell. This is straight up metal in hardcore techno style. There's also a really great version of DJ Paul Elstak. one of the hardcore GOATs . Love withdoctor as a whole. always gets me going!

you have to see the music video at the origin of " "Witch Doktor" with a semi-groundbreaking use of CGI animation/compositing. The singing is about the same but more assertive. They did other MVs like" Kitty Kitty" and "Who's Gonna Be The GOAT". I thought dancers in the joint ( i like plugging that word when i can ) would do the part of the choreography when everyone drops to the floor unconscious after being telekinized into it. But they couldn't recreate the part where they levitate also telekinized into it by the Witch Md.

De Staat's first album was basically the embodiment of the meme "needs more cowbell". I remember people saying that Torre Florim was that guy who needed it. There's lots of (literal) cowbell in that first album, and it kind of became a bit of a meme on its own among my friends at least. :)

The music video and live version of Witch Doctor are also more stripped down than the album version (I_Con, 2013).

Torre Florim (the leadman), writes a LOT of irony/satire in his lyrics, the way he sings is so matter of fact at some points but he drops some of the funniest zingers out of nowhere. Very dry humour.
Blues is Dead, Mona Lisa, Input Source Select (Vinticious or Live at Giel), Back to the Grind Live 2009 (that show was insane) are my recommendations. They’re one of my fav bands next to Nine Inch Nails, found out about De Staat through the Queens of the Stone Age subreddit

Ok. Not sure if I'm 100% correct. But they were the main show at Lowlands 2019. They weren't supposed to be. The Prodigy was. But their leadsinger passed away. So De Staat stepped in. They opened their show with a tribute to that leadsinger. With Torre Florim's cover of Firestarter. According to the Prodigy the best rendition of their hit song ever made...... So even though I doubt this comment will recieve any 'I concur's', I'd still respectfully urge you to listen to this. Or better, dive into De Staat.... Most underappreciated band ever. My personal suggestion? Peace, Love & Profit. The lyrics.... Soooooo smartly done....Funny, cynical, true. "Throwing a tomato as far as the cliché goes". Discover the rest yourself......😉. Nijmegen is lovely btw. Used to live there.

Woah I had no idea about the story behind Lowlands, I just thought it was a fantastic tribute to Keef.

I love De Staat, but this is actually one of my least favourite songs. Still good though, you can’t really go wrong with any of their songs. I’d say my favourite song is probably Input Source Select, especially their live performance at Giel. By the way, this song is about charlatans trying to convince people not to trust modern science, and go with their cure and drugs instead…

    • @larsickenroth7169
      @larsickenroth7169 ปีที่แล้ว

Which is why this DJ’s analysis is spot on about what they’re attempting (and succeeding) to do. It only works though because of the process the international crowd hasn’t witnessed: them growing to this point as a band, and especially Torre (leadsinger/writer) who does indeed have quite a sarcastic wit about him. They’ve been great all along, but I get your point about this song: it’s the ‘hit’ that lures people in though, and that’s great. Because they have so much more good stuff, going back to ‘Wait for Evolution’ or ‘Machinery’.
If I had to pick though, I_CON is most definitely my favorite album (and the vinticious versions as an extension of that). De Staat has always had this idea of the band as a machine, and that album was the perfect mix of human-machine at exactly the right time, with nothing but great songs. (Hard to pick a favorite there).
      Cheers

I saw this reaction video back when you put it up here 8 months ago. Can't believe that I didn't comment on it back then. Today I went through a few of your older reaction videos once again, and got stuck with this one. Great breakdown!
Now I have another suggestion/request (whatever you wanna call it) from this band: Kitty Kitty. I don't believe you've reacted to that song yet. So here's the link to the official video (5 years old already!): th-cam.com/video/MWM9DC-31Xo/w-d-xo.html

Haha. When you said "satirical", you just might have hit the nail on the head.
That's half their repertoire 😂. Add on the fact that most every of their songs are in a different genre or subgenre. They just do what they want and they're great

  • @xeesus

There is such a lack of De Staat reactions on TH-cam. And in general, De Staat isn't really popular outside Netherlands for some reason. They are awesome, every one who's ever listened to them says they are awesome, yet their music on youtube rarely gains over a million views.
