Of all the rail/anvil videos I’ve watched, and there’s been a lot! I’ve never seen anyone utilize the already flat side! Everybody grinds down the round side and make a horn. I feel stupid for not thinking of this before. Thank you!
I just got a piece of rail after waiting years. As soon as I saw the underneath, that will do me a 21×5 1/2 flat plate that looks easy to clean up 👍. I was wondering how I was going to shape a piece of tree for it. I'm happy I never started now because now I know how I'm doing it thx to Mr Paton and utube. I might dress the top rail later if need it because it looks like a lot of disc,s and a steady hand
Necessity is the mother of invention rather than going and buying a major tool if you don’t have aces to one. You could make then blanks with an X-Carve too...if you had one.

the whole video is fluff. just have a machine shop flatten the top of the rail, and you're done, good to go for decades. my dad's been using a rail anvil for 30 years at least, without stupid ass wood to absorb the energy of impact and rot, crush, and loosen up. this whole idea is stupid. plywood? c'mon man, that's not how to build an anvil.

I have a piece of rail track. I don't think I would use the flat bottom because that part of the track has not been hardened. Only the top has been heat treated plus it has been hardened by the rail car wheels have hardened it further by the load of the railroad cars plus the heat from the rolling car wheels. The track top is pretty damn hard. Try cutting the train rail with a vertical saw with blade cooling lubercant. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to cut through. If you cut it to fast you will break the blade. I know I have broken blades before.

Now that was neat! I never thought about making up something like that. I've got a piece of rail coming in in a couple days that I am going to make an anvil out of. I'll have to seriously consider making up a stand like that. Great video!
since the body is out of multiplex wood i doubt he will use it for heavy hammering or blacksmithing. but it's an easy way of building something for small work where brutal force is out of the question
This is a great idea, really clever. Something like this never occurred to me. I'm going to make one of these for a rail piece I just purchased. Probably overkill, but I think I'll use 10 ply birch for maximum strength, and modify the profile a bit for my preference. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you Richard! I grab this thing all the time, even for minor hammering work. Using some high-grade thick ply would definitely make the process easier, you'd have fewer pieces to cut and less sanding once it's all assembled.

Well, hello to my Canadian Cousin. I'm in the USA. By chance I own one anvil with good rebound. I think it was made in Russia. Harbor Freight doesn't sell them anymore. My guess is that it has to do with sanctions.

this is a terrible idean. do like my dad did 30 years ago: have a machine shop flatten the top of the rail, and you're done. no wood to rot, crush, absorb energy, etc. My dad's still using the same rail, by the way. never had to work on it or be inconvenienced by the stupid wood.
is fine for JEWELERS the anvil itself have more than enough mass to resist pounding on small pieces of gold or platinum . Hard wood stump is used even at blacksmith shop and work perfect if the anvil is heavy enough . This idea is for small precision smithing .. for heavy pounding i have 120 lb anvil resting on mothe... big oak stump

It’s not boxed in. The rail can be removed and flipped to have either side facing up. I’m not a blacksmith so it really doesn’t have to survive a whole lot. It’s rock solid, I wouldn’t classify laminated plywood as “soft plywood”.

I only clicked on this to say that it's completely stupid. you have there a perfectly good piece of steel, then you want to put it upside down in such a manner that all the force from your hammer blows are going to be absorbed by the wood underneath. I can see quite clearly that the narrow rail top will be driven down into the wood, crushing it, making things loosen up. try this: put the rail right side up, and flatten the top. my dad's been using rail anvils for 30 years at least. he had a machine shop flatten the top, done. done. done. no problem or useless 'layers of plywood' to rot, crush, or cause problems. I'll say this though, you certainly found a creative way to waste your time and resources. not impressed.

because you wouldn't want to use it for anything but soft metals.....it's annealed so it's much softer than the top..
I neglected to say, it was ingenious the way you designed the stand so it would work both ways. I'd never have thought to do that.

Тупость у не русских, много возни. Можно взять 1 доску и 2 бруска, доска снизу и 2 бруска сверху, обточить рубанком, склеить и на болты.

that's okay ..the bottom is hard enough for delicate projects ...this anvil system is fantastic for jewelry shop

Подставка под рельсу из километра фанеры. Если хочется универсальности, проще вторую рельсу достать и ноги к ней приварить. Диз короче.
рельс плохо варится , пробовал , хотя может не умею, но там сталь похожа на чугун

I only clicked on this to say that it's completely stupid. you have there a perfectly good piece of steel, then you want to put it upside down in such a manner that all the force from your hammer blows are going to be absorbed by the wood underneath. I can see quite clearly that the narrow rail top will be driven down into the wood, crushing it, making things loosen up. try this: put the rail right side up, and flatten the top.
my dad's been using rail anvils for 30 years at least. he had a machine shop flatten the top, done. done. done. no problem or useless 'layers of plywood' to rot, crush, or cause problems.
I'll say this though, you certainly found a creative way to waste your time and resources. not impressed.

Yeah, that occurred to me moments after I submitted my reply.
I love seeing people like you in the comments. You're normally creatively inept, have very little to no skills and are certainly not a master at anything, yet you spout you're mouth off, vomiting hindsight all over comments sections, and even have the balls to shit on projects done by actual master craftsman. You have the inability to share constructive criticism because you're simply just an ass. Have a nice life with all the rest of the lovely Professor TH-cam Expert crowd. :)
P.S. It's very obviously for light work, he's not going to be pounding out a long sword on this. And the grain direction of the plywood should be plenty strong not to crush under any force he's going to be putting on it. Yours truly a materials engineer. Lol
