Thanks! Yeah I’m lucky to have a decent amount of these trees to collect seeds from in my area. It’s funny I actually collected a bunch more of these Dawn Redwood seed pods yesterday morning to grow more. 😂 I have 5 baby seedlings from this batch in the video still growing strong!
@@dreamingofbonsai not a lot of Red Woods growing in Alaska. Not sure if I should be ordering seeds, or saplings. Seeds are safer, with the weather being cold, but I was scared off with reports of low germination rates. Looks like you’re dialed in though. Thinkin I’ll go for seeds
Thanks, Tom! I really appreciate that! Yeah I find it’s a pretty low number of seeds that sprout, probably only about 10 percent or so, but that’s why I put a lot of seed in the bag! I check the bag every few days, I just added about 3 more last night even! 😀
Thanks! Yeah it’s quite cool seeing the momma tree and then baby trees! Hopefully the baby trees grow big and strong! Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you have a good holiday!
Thanks! Yeah they are one of my favorites for sure! I’ve had at least 10 more germinate since this video as well! I’m excited to see how many will make it through the winter.
more than 95 percent of my trees were seed grown, so i appreciate this video very much Dave. The advantage as is apparent from your dawn redwood in the beginning, is better roots and better branch choice/placement ( collected young trees often shed their lower branches). loved the cinnamon tip btw. Sub and like well earned. -MD
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. So true about growing from seed, I find the process super exciting seeing the seed develop from the various growth stages. I alway encourage people to walk around a local park or street sidewalk and see what falls from the trees along the path. If it grows in the ground in ones local area there’s a chance it can grow in a pot! Thank you for following my bonsai journey and I look forward to following yours as well!
Dave that's awesome. The fact you can collect from your doorstep. Nice 👍🏻 I'm going to be collecting something from my work this week, but it's a lot bigger than a seed 😁
Thank you! I’m excited for its development in the future! I would highly recommend searching out a Dawn Redwood tree in a park in your area and snagging some seed pods. Most trees drop thousands of seeds on the ground and have a high germination rate. Since i made this video I’ve had about 25-50 more seeds sprout. If can’t find any in your area and you’re in the USA I’ll send you some seeds! 👍
@@dreamingofbonsai Nice! I've done that too, but with a very mature specimen (same tree that I got the cuttings off of, probably 5-10yr old nursery tree). It worked with a branch with about 1" in diameter, but not with smaller pencil sized branches for some reason.
@@BostonBonsaiIdiot oh that is good to know! I've been trying to gather as much info as I can on other peoples experience air layering dawn redwoods before I attempt it!
@@alinaptaszynski822 thanks! Yup in the winter i keep them inside. If they wake up from dormancy early i keep them under grow lights inside with my tropical trees. When it stays consistently no lower than 40F I take them back outside for the spring, summer, and fall. Good luck with yours!
I would say if you plan on putting your Dawn Redwood into the ground, if you grew it from seed I would have it grown in a pot for the first year or two. Bring it indoors over the winter. Then I would plant it in the ground in the spring.
So all you did was wrap these seeds in a wet paper towel and in 2 weeks you had sprouts?? No scarification? No stratification? I got a bunch of seeds I am trying to figure out how to get started. I have bald cypress, dawn redwood, japanese larch, river birch, and japanese zelkova. How would you do these? Just wrap them in a wet towel and plop into the fridge? or no, you didn't even put them in the fridge, did you?? Please help?? Any words of wisdom here??
Hi Lisa! Thanks for checking this Dawn Redwood video out! So out of the tree seeds you listed I only have experience with growing Dawn Redwood trees from seed. And yes you are right, all I did was break apart the seed pod, spread the seeds on a wet paper towel, added the cinnamon to prevent mold, put that in a zippy bag, and set them aside in my house at room temperature. My advice with the Dawn Redwoods is strength in numbers. Out of the many seeds that started germinating I only have 4 that survived this year. So start as many seeds as you can get you hands on.
Look at that success!
Noooice!
And super cool to have a local tree to collect from.
