Fifteen Dollar Nursery Juniper to Bonsai, September 2024
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I take a $14.98 Juniper that I bought at a local big-box store and begin it's bonsai journey by giving it a heavy prune. For this juniper I am going to try and style it to look like a wind swept tree. I did not do a root prune or repot on this tree. I will do that maybe in the spring of 2025. This one has a long way to go, but it took it's first steps on a long journey today.

@@GreenCorner_S thank you! Unfortunately this one didn’t survive due to me watering right after the defoliation. But I learned some great lessons from it. 😃
Thanks for video. I really appreciated you adding in the dates you did things. I just found female gingko, collected bunch of the fruit off ground and will follow your techniques. Maybe i will have babies next yr! Im in Alabama. It is now mid October.
Awesome! I’m glad you liked the video! Good luck with your ginkgos seeds, I hope you’ll have some roots coming out of the seeds in a few months! You are reminding me that I need to go check the ginkgo tree I got these seeds from and see if it dropped any seeds this year yet. 😊

Wish I would've saved some of my old Legos from when I was a kid, I totally would make a lego bonsai pot as you have. 😎 Those acacia seem to be growing extremely well for you in PA.
@@DeciduousSnurb Yeah these are growing really well for me. They’ve even started budding a lot since this video. But pretty soon I’ll have to bring them back inside because the nights are starting to get around the mid 40sF around here. I actually picked up a lot of these legos at an outdoor flea market last year, so if you have one of those or a thrift store near you pick some up and try building one. It was a ton of fun!
Pretty clever, good sir. I’m diggin it Evermore

The trees are looking great Dave, good job. The Skeleton is a good idea. I did a skeleton Halloween tree last year as part of Gavin's challenge. It's one of my favourite trees now.
@@bonsaiexpression thanks! Oh yeah I remember that one. Thats a beauty of a tree you have as well!
I did one years ago jokes on the person who stole it. I used tree of haven as I wasn't at a lost but the Halloween decoration. 😂
@@sagebonsai oh dang, someone stole your bonsai?
@dreamingofbonsai yeah, but that was years ago. I wasn't made as it's considered a pesky weed tree anyways. Since then I hardly keep my work displayed in the front yard.
I gotta hand it to you Dave. You even found a coffin pot. Hope she lives, even if her host has passed!
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai Hahaha! I hope so too! If the tree makes it I’m wondering what will break … will plastic ribcage break or will the tree just form the trunk around and within it? 🤣
Thx , for sharing. I’m not sure but I think the skeleton will escape @ Halloween 🎃
Very nice. Ibhope the skeleton tree survives, I am interested to see how it turns out.
@@classyadventures599 Thanks! I have a good feeling that the skeleton acacia tree will make through (as long as the squirrels stay away from it). I have another third acacia tree from the three I grew from seed and that one had its roots completely torn apart by squirrels, I shoved it back down deep in the soil and it’s doing just fine now … it even put on a couple branches recently. So it seems Acacia Trees can withstand a lot!
Some very interesting projects on the go Dave. I love the lego pot :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat thanks, Xavier! I appreciate it. I’ll probably make another Lego pot in the near future, it holds up pretty well surprisingly!

Acacia #3, hard pruning for a nice looking tree in the future. Well thought out.
Thanks! Slow and steady wins the race right? 😊 How are your acacia seedlings doing? Still going strong?
Lego pot is cool. Nice pruning on the acacia.
Thanks! I’m going to have to make another Lego bonsai pot soon. It holds up pretty well to the elements outside.
Nice experiment with the acacia and the skeleton.
Thanks! I’m curious how it will develop in the future. It will be a test to see what is stronger, the plastic ribcage or the acacia. 😂

How do you store your Eastern Redbud tree in winter?
@@gsacki2010 I keep it inside in my attic. Ideally, from what I understand, it would be nice to have it in an environment just above freezing.
good video, i have a couple of banyan ficus, which look very similar, they are tough hardy plants,. itll survive
@@paulformaioni37 thanks! Yeah so far this one is recovering nicely. When I watered it this morning it showed many new leaves … so I think it will be just fine.
I've been foraging for Pawpaw for a few years now, I love em. My banner photo is actually a Pawpaw grove canopy, huge leaves. The ones I find are usually hit or miss with the flavor, unless you pick them from a reliable cultivar tree. If you ever hunt for them yourself, they love moist soil in shady understory, often near a creek or river.
That is so awesome. I would LOVE to go foraging for Pawpaw. That sounds like a ton of fun!
Cool find. I would recommend removing the remaining berries on your juniper. They look nice for sure but I think taking them off might help with recovery from heavy pruning to direct energy towards new foliage. I bought a native juniper with the cultivar name 'Grey Owl' and it was loaded with berries but the foliage was a little sparse so I removed them, this year it doubled its foliage, though mine is still not ready for bonsai.
That is a fantastic idea and totally makes sense to remove the berries. Someone else mentioned about the Grey Owl variety, I'll have to look into that species. I'm happy to hear your tree is doing well this year!
@@dreamingofbonsai The latin name is Juniperus virginiana which is Eastern Red Cedar, so 'Grey Owl' is just a cultivar of that species. So a native juniper, very cold hardy.
@@DeciduousSnurb Oh wow, well actually I have a bunch of Eastern Red Cedar seedlings that i'm growing. They pop up in my backyard like crazy. I never knew it by the "Grey Owl" name.
I alwasy forget when trimming junipers usually as well but keep some branches to use as jin, it gives you spots to attach wire to and creates more interest in the tree. Just a tip from a newbie as well. Great video as far as the quality everyhing looks good and you sound good.
@@Slippedndipped thanks for the tip! I haven’t done much work with jin on my bonsai yet. That is a bonsai technique I’d like to try more in the future. Thanks for checking it out!
Keep it OUTSIDE and do not overwater, junipers are easy
@@EricShingles-p6q thanks for the tips! Hopefully I’ll keep this one going into the far future.
So all you did was wrap these seeds in a wet paper towel and in 2 weeks you had sprouts?? No scarification? No stratification? I got a bunch of seeds I am trying to figure out how to get started. I have bald cypress, dawn redwood, japanese larch, river birch, and japanese zelkova. How would you do these? Just wrap them in a wet towel and plop into the fridge? or no, you didn't even put them in the fridge, did you?? Please help?? Any words of wisdom here??
Hi Lisa! Thanks for checking this Dawn Redwood video out! So out of the tree seeds you listed I only have experience with growing Dawn Redwood trees from seed. And yes you are right, all I did was break apart the seed pod, spread the seeds on a wet paper towel, added the cinnamon to prevent mold, put that in a zippy bag, and set them aside in my house at room temperature. My advice with the Dawn Redwoods is strength in numbers. Out of the many seeds that started germinating I only have 4 that survived this year. So start as many seeds as you can get you hands on.
@@dreamingofbonsai I only have 20 but I can get more if this attempt fails. They are not hard to get. Thank you so much!!
@@lisawagner6076 good luck with them! Keep me posted if you get results, I’d love to hear how it goes. 👍👍

A lot of pruning, but well done. Looking good to me. Time to get it ready for winter.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 yeah I’m hoping I didn’t take to much off. I guess I’ll find out next spring!
I'm brand new to your channel. I like your ambitious skills but I think it's a bit too much clipping. With junipers think of working in ⅕ at a time. Just like you junipers wasn't in my favor for development. Until I got myself a grey owl juniper it takes on everything I done to it.
@@sagebonsai thanks for checking out the video! Yikes I was fearful that I took off to much. Hopefully this juniper pulls through. It’s always a learning curve. I will keep in mind the 1/5 at a time technique on the next prune and on future nursery stock. Thank you for that. I’ll have to look into a grey owl juniper. I just looked up photos online of grey owl junipers, they look very cool!

What kind of juniper is this? Is this a Hollywood Juniper (kaizuka/torulosa)?
Hi! I believe this was labeled as a "Parsonii Juniper" which google is telling is also a "Juniperus chinensis" (Parson's Juniper)
Hi! Why you did not re-pot it? Great work btw!
Thank you! So I didn't repot this juniper right away because I do not want to shock the tree. I want to take this step-by-step so I don't kill the tree. I already cut off a lot of branches, so next spring I will take the next step and repot it. Then maybe a few months after that I'll prune again.
