I have seen this episode in re-runs a few times over the years. There is a sketch that happens about 20 minutes later where Buck's character in the sketch is wearing a white bandage on his head. He ad-libs a line, and I honestly don't remember the reason, but he ad-libs "Thank god for the bandage!" Also he wasn't "stabbed"; as related in the story, Buck got too close and since John was swinging and didn't see him at first, Buck got a close shave. His bigger cuts and bruises came from him jumping "out the window" and landing wrong.
The full skit is on NBCs web site. Bucks visibly bleeding from a gash on this forehead after Belushis's wild backswing, and Jim is visibly freaked before he boosts Buck out the improvised window.
I remember watching the show in 1978 and it was obvious that Buck had been hurt. Chevy announced that he'd been cut during Weekend Update and everyone was wearing band aids by the end of the show! We were all in on it.
Dean Martin was another who disdained rehearsals. He would show up for a "walk through" so that he knew where to be, who to speak to, kinda what to say, and perhaps what song to sing. Other than that, he would wait for the actual filming to begin and then improvise. To me, that was 95% of the popularity of Martin's show: no one ever know what was coming and when. Dino was a magnificent improvisor, one of the best who has ever been (next to Jonathan and Robin).
If you don't find it funny, that's a YOU problem. I bet you post this on every old snl clip. SNL is hilarious and a lot of that depends on the host. You're a huge bummer on the other hand. Bye 🇺🇲🌈🍻

Very interesting. Thanks!
It was nice to see the SNL pics from “the good ol’ days”, as well.
You're welcome!
Another fantastic interview, Jim. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you Mateja!

One of the great things about live TV, a situation like that wouldn't translate as well on a pre-taped program.
Ouch
Jackie Gleason didn't rehearse either- he just walked in and did it live
Which is why on the Honeymooners he had cues to tell the other actors he forgot his lines.
Which could get a little dicey when the skits were live...

Back when SNL was actually funny...

Bet you sucked then too.
What a brave take
