    Normally i wouldnt expect myself to watch knife making videos all the time, it gets boring after awhile, but this guy has so many designs and ideas and i love a little bit angular and sharp designs instead of fluid and organic shapes. Every single piece you make looks amazing. Thanks for the video!

      You'd be surprised what you can do with a grinder wheel.. my matabo is 27 years old... Haven't even changed the brushes I've built DOZENS of knives, axes , demo's of vehicles frame's machine shop carpenter and everything else you can think of . Knives turn out Beautiful when using leaf springs and just a 4 1/2 " grinder wheels and a bucket of aircraft grade grease..

    I like the design and the finished knife is beautiful. Would have liked to see how it would function with some sort of small strike plate or thickened/widened area at the end of the pommel to facilitate blows with a mallet or the heel of the hand. The current design invites striking it on the pommel to use it like a chisel in a dire situation, but the blow will fall on the thinned metal of that lanyard loop.
    One can see that creating a thickened, widened area there would have added tremendously to the cost and time involved in making the blade. (Especially true if trying to solely grind it from flat stock!) I suppose it might be most easily done by heating one end of the bar past critical and upsetting the heated metal. It would be important to make sure to anneal it then and get adequate cycles to normalize the steel after grinding, before the quench. After the quench you would need to temper the end much softer than the rest of the tool so it didn’t chip if hit with something metal.
    Even if one did all that as the “easiest way,” it would exponentially increase the complexity of manufacturing and finishing because the workpiece couldn’t lay completely flat to drill, grind or sand it. Alas, probably far too much trouble! Someone out there might have a better idea. Maybe it would be best to adjust the size and position of the lanyard loop so that less metal is removed and it retains more strength? Again, that’s a beautiful piece.
    Cheers mate!

    Hey that's neat! I just made something similar for myself to make pulling baseboards easier. It has a knife/chisel side just like that for scoring paint/caulking and wedging the baseboard away from the wall. I put a 90* bend at the end of the handle to be used as a small prybar. The handle and finish isnt nearly as aesthetically pleasing as yours though.

    just a tip, when drilling through metal using a drill press. Sometimes it is handy to have a spray bottle with water in it, to spray into the hole being drilled, used to cool off the bit as it cuts. Same process is used with some bandsaws

    • @xilpes6254
      @xilpes6254 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn't that depend on the drill bit that is used?

    • @hajii124
      @hajii124 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xilpes6254 glad you asked. It depends more on the thickness of the metal being drilled but I would also recommend using carbon tipped bits, as most of them were designed for metal. The water isn't needed regardless but it may save you some drill bits :)

    • @hajii124
      @hajii124 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regardless what bit you use, wipe the water off the bit when finished, otherwise it can rust

    Is it those gloves that give you a +10 for those grinder skills?... Amazing

    • @NuttyCuts_
      @NuttyCuts_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The angle grinder is the only tool he has a reason wear gloves for, because of the sparks, although they are not really harmful. At first I didn’t notice he was wearing gloves for the whole video but when I saw him on the drill press and the belt sander I cringed. If you don’t know, wearing gloves on machines with rotating parts and places that can easily catch things is a very very bad idea, if you get you the end of your finger trapped it can and will pull more of your hand in, if you aren’t wearing gloves and this happens then the most that will happen is a small Nick on your finger. If he ever stops uploading then you know it’s the gloves faulty

    Another beautiful knife build. Very creative and the finish is just what this knife needed. Brass scales where a really nice touch. The only thing i would have liked would be to use a different metal for the rivets. A little contrast and the industrial look of the rivets would have added to the over all look. But still its beautiful brother. Very nice work.
