What do you guys think about all this playback-synths many (metal-)bands (like here Katatonia) use these days? In my opinion they should get a keyboarder - it doesn't sound and look authentic this way. (and btw: I'm a big Katatonia-fan anyway. :-) )
Matthew Winkler yeah I think so, too. It's okay to add some punch into your mix witch additional vocals and so on but not a completely new instrument without even playing it live is meh :(
Music is music, restricting yourself to physical instruments is nuts. However I do have to admit I dislike the idea that they are being forced into playing with the synths.
I dislike Katatonia's live mix: Anders voice it's too high up the mix. In the records It's sorta ok (although my least favorite aspect of katatonia) but live it just distracts from Jonas' vocals which are much better anyway.
I wish Katatonia had a professional live DVD for all of Dead End Kings and more. They are just phenomenal live and no video truly does them justice.

It's expensive to tour for a band like Katatonia, imagine having to hire at least one keyboardist and one technician more.
