  • Sol Gabetta has done it all - the cellist has played on the world’s greatest stages, worked with the best orchestras, won major prizes. What more can she achieve? We met the cello star at a concert at the Rheingau Music Festival 2023. On the program is a work that is very special to her - Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Gabetta will be accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner. In the interview, she talks about her childhood, her family, her name (Sol means sun), her age, her passion, the pressures of the concert business, the relationship between quality and quantity, Elgar’s Cello Concerto and, of course, her future.

Gabetta is one of the most important cellists of the 21st century. Born in Argentina to French and Russian parents, she began playing the violin at the age of three. At the age of four, she switched to the cello and has remained faithful to the instrument to this day. Gabetta initially received her training in Buenos Aires and won numerous prizes at an early age. From 2001 she studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid, later in Basel with Ivan Monighetti and finally at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. With her repertoire, which ranges from baroque to contemporary music, she delights large audiences worldwide. But Gabetta also does lots of other things. She taught at the Music Academy in Basel, hosted the TV show “KlickKlack” for many years, and in 2006 founded her own festival in her adopted home of Switzerland, called the SOLsberg Festival. Gabetta plays several Italian master instruments from the early 18th century, including a cello by Matteo Goffriller from 1730 and a Guadagnini cello from 1759. Since 2020, she has also played the “Bonamy Dobree-Suggia” by Antonio Stradivari from 1717.
