    Finally, someone who is actually helpful, the amount of times I've been told by trainers to ignore the bad behaviour and reward the behaviour you want to see it don't work

    Thanks a lot for this video, I've only watched two of your videos and I'd say you're one of the best dog trainers I've found on TH-cam. You deserve a lot more subscribers. There's only one other channel that I know if that uses your or similar methods. Since the moment I started applying them, I found my dog completely changed. He used to pull and do whatever he wanted, and within a week or so he turned into a nice walker. Like a miracle. This method works! Also his reactivity to other dogs has decreased a lot, thanks to a combination of this and Cesar Millan's pack leader energy approach, as I realised I was all stressed out before. Go on like this, I'd love to see more of such videos 👍

      Yes, Jason is really good (this video contained great advice for me) but I suggest you also take a look at ‘Beckmans dog training’ too.
      I’ve found Joel Beckmans forthright training style excellent for my 15 month Golden Retriever (Dave) that I re-homed at 8 months old; he’d never walked on a leash with his first owner plus he hadn’t been socialised as a young puppy…as a result he was difficult initially but now walks really well on a flat collar; reactivity is still ‘work in progress’!
      I’ve been using a combination of Jason’s and Joel’s methods and they work for me Cheers Neil🇬🇧

      I feel the EXACT same way. Too many people think of their dogs like people, (would you walk your boy/girlfriend/wife/husband on a leash?!) and the slightest bit of discipline is cruel or unusual punishment. Like you, this is the second vid I've watched and I made a comment to that effect in that vid's comments. (loved his style/method/philosophy) Shame he doesn't have more subs.

      I've tried everything with my dog and nothing is working. I have several gentle leaders, several prong collars, and several shock collars. I correct him with the shock collar, pull up on the prong collar and still have problems. He's only a year and two months old and been working with him on his walk daily.

      I wonder why there’s so many reactive dogs. Growing up I rarely saw dogs like that. Seems like there’s a lot now.

    I've just found your videos and am so thankful. We have an 18 month old german shepherd. Weve had him since he was 6 months old... i have no idea what happened to him before this but he is super reactive. But he's amazing with my children that still live at home... and my older children who visit. Weve wirked with a positive enforcement trainer... cost me a fortune in chicken but when she brought her dog along to work on reactivity and her dog went for mine we decided her methods didn't work. Next recommended trainer put a slip lead on my dog and when he reacted he pulled it tight until my dog passed out and said.. well you'll have a different dog now.
    I'd given up on trainers but you've given me hope.

    This is the first video I have seen with a dog similar to mine and the trainer actually using methods that makes sense and communicated with the dog in a calm manner. This method, is firm and corrective, but not harsh like other methods I have seen like dogs getting strangled by the slip lead... I have so much to learn and still struggle with an aggressively reactive dog who is a dominant female, but this video has helped me so much....
    Thank you!

      my pleasure just remember to remain consistent and patient. It is okay to have expectations with your Dog that is how you will get through to them. Like you said in your comment, it’s not about being harsh but you are allowed to expect them to do things.

    Interestingly enough I recently said to a trainer in the States that I use a Halter. His response was the head halter is tough because it's more of a management tool rather than a correction tool. This was in response to my question on his post about how to correct the reactive dogs looking before the dog escalates. That's what the post was about. Look, Load, Escalate, stop before the loading starts, which I understand but my boy is really pig headed and my corrections are quite harsh to break that contact but doesn't always work. Where I worked in Victoria, every dog was trained on a head halter and they had thousands of dogs go through there program over the years. I can understand why owners get frustrated when there is so much conflicting opinions out there on tools and training advice.

      I think it's important to see the equipment is a tool, communication and attitude with the training method can be used with whatever collar you have.
      I've tried many types with varying success because of my lack of understanding how to use it correctly😢

      Anything can hurt your dog if you use it incorrectly. Dogs are very robust don't be to nervous to use equipment that's going to help your dog. You wont fox these issues with treats. The force used is relative to the dogs size. I have literally trained thousands of dogs and never hurt their neck or injured them in any other way.

    I hope you can do a case around fear aggressive dog. Going to a walk and vet visits have been the hardest. I’ve been in contact with a trainer and a behaviour before, they can’t even come close to her saying she’s bad.

    • @jasonharrisdogtraining
      @jasonharrisdogtraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your dog is not bad for being scared. You need to work on trust with her and everything she experiences. Work on creating a positive connection with things that scare her. It can be a long process but it can be improved with patience.

    My pitbull mix is probably three times as bad as her with reacting to other nearby dogs, but he’s become maybe 20% better after a month of loose leash training, correcting and working with a trainer. It’s a struggle and a long process 🥴 at least he’s loose leash walking amazingly with no distractions around now, and doing decently with some distractions

    My dog is a 16 mos rescue rat terrier and i have a 13 year old beagle. He is super leash reactive when they are together you to the point where I feel like, I can't walk him anymore but if I walk him alone, I can correct him and do that. Do I need to move on to just walking him alone for a little while he does have a gentle leader now he had a major meltdown right in the center of town yesterday where I was sitting and with both dogs and my beagle, how old and I was so embarrassed, and I know that I don't want to correct to him under those circumstances and I just kind of need guidance on do I need to separate them on walks because he's much better he's on himself and I can only focus on him and I can be the eyes to look for that other dog. He sees every rabbit every squirrel and I've been getting him not to stop and sniff everywhere and Mark everywhere and just walk with me my beagle just can't keep up with that. I am very frightened that he will get hold off for being a bad dog I live right in the center of a small city town city in Massachusetts and I'm kind of noticeable because I have white hair and I wear orange sneakers. By the way off leash in and other social situations like I've taken him to a brewery in stores in his good in the car and an off leash park, he was fine and had a lot of fun and wasn't reactive but then again, he wasn't obeying me either but that's when I first got him. We haven't gone back there because he got Giardina from falling another dog into bad water.🤷‍♀️🙄
    I am trying I love your videos. They're very helpful to me and encourage me to be a better owner and pack leader I need to be.

    Can this training work for a dog reactive to people?

    • @jasonharrisdogtraining
      @jasonharrisdogtraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would first try an address trust with people by getting them to try giving the treats at a distance, i realise often the dog won’t take the food but it’s worth trying first. It also depends if it’s fear based reactivity or just aggression. If it’s aggression i would use more of a positive punishment approach done with correct timing. Always keep dog muzzled for safety.

    • @jessyskehan1696
      @jessyskehan1696 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonharrisdogtraining I’m told it’s fear-based. She’s OK with people until they are less than 10’ from her/us. She will take tossed treats. We can walk by people closer provided they ignore her and don’t talk or try to touch her. If they do so, she will lunge and nip to get them to back away. Has learned it works. Wears muzzle and Gentle Leader without protest. We have begun seeing a second trainer/behaviorist. First one made reactivity worse.

    • @jasonharrisdogtraining
      @jasonharrisdogtraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jessyskehan1696 yes the wrong approach to fear based reactivity will definitely make it worse. It’s all about trust, that being said there is a time for corrections when needed. Don’t let the dogs fear make you feel you can’t ever reprimand them. Let her makes her own decisions when meeting. A slip lead can be good to get them past their fears by small approximations in working closer towards the target. It’s all about patience when fixing these problems. Once you get her close to people keep building her circle of trust by progressively meeting more people over time.

    Your lead must always be attached to the dogs collar as well as the head harness, many dogs can back out of a head harness in a state of excitement if they're dog reactive and then you've got a loose dog to contend with without it being attached to the collar as a secure back-up.

    • @jasonharrisdogtraining
