The original “Andromeda Strain” -probably one of the most realistic science fiction films. A bit more thoughtful in its pacing it might not play well in todays rapid edit culture. “The Omega Man” -with Charlton Heston (remade as I am Legend) but enough significant differences and carries the theme of a biological outbreak that causes society to collapse. Tough themes and imagery but I liked it. So there you have a list of virus themed monsters movies across a wide spectrum of styles and genres.
I'm going to second Andromeda Strain. The original from 1971, not the 2008 remake. It's much closer to the novel. The new one is prettier and faster but the old one closer to the novel and the slower pacing until the end helps the stress of the situation creep in better. Also, I am Legend (2007) with Will Smith wasn't actually a remake of Omega Man (1971) with Charlton Heston just like Omega Man wasn't a remake of The Last Man on Earth (1964) with Vincent Price. They are all different adaptation of the book, "I am Legend" (1954) by Richard Matheson.
Original Andromeda Strain was Great. I remember first seeing at at around age 12 in the 70's on the late late show on Sat Night. Scared the hack out of me.
You're right to use the term "method" to describe Hofman. He's a "method" actor which focuses on personal immersion into the state of mind of the characters. One of the greatest acting anecdotes I've ever heard came from the set of The Marathon Man, in which he is portraying a character who has been on the run for several days, and is exhausted, so he deliberately stayed awake, and when he showed up on set in his obviously distraught physical and emotional state, the classically trained Laurence Olivier asked him why, and after hearing it explained, Olivier said "Why don't you try acting dear boy; it's so much easier."
Method acting can take it out of you, and can take a long time to recover from, depending on the role. I was in a stage production of a play to do with the Holocaust, and some of the immersion activities I had to do scared me. It took me three months to get back together, but apparently, the play went down very well with the punters.
LOL. I think I've heard that one before. If you can be a method actor without it hurting you fine. But doing physically destructive things to get into character is nuts.

Donald Sutherland's "Are you dumb or somethin'?" has been in my head ever since this movie came out. Such a funny delivery in such a high stakes, deadly serious situation.
When I was in the Army, I was 74D CBRN - Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Warfare Specialist. We mostly worried about enemies dropping "dirty" bombs, nerve agents (chemical), and anthrax (biological), but we trained for a wide variety of weaponized threats.
The bomb in the opening scene is a real bomb, the BLU-82 ‘Daisy Cutter’, it’s called a “thermobaric” bomb, also known as a fuel-air bomb, it’s the predecessor to the GBU-43 ‘MOAB’, it spreads a fine mist of aerosolized flammable mist and then detonates the mist, completely consuming the oxygen in the area of effect, these are also called ‘vacuum bombs’ as they create a momentary vacuum immediately after the fireball explodes.

They showed us this movie in middle school science class when we were studying viruses. Though it is a movie with lots of Hollywood conveniences, it depicts a worst-case scenario of a viral outbreak that is frighteningly realistic at times. And needless to say, it's highly relevant in a post-pandemic world. Though COVID is nowhere near as deadly as the fictional Motaba, the movie shows the severe danger of a contagious virus that rapidly mutates. It's a cautionary story. COVID might have a comparatively much lower mortality rate than Motaba, we should feel somewhat lucky that it does, as a Motaba-like virus is an extreme yet real possibility.
The small town used as ‘Cedar Creek’ is actually Ferndale, California. It’s known for beautiful Victorian homes & for being the childhood hometown of Guy Fieri, where he was recently named honorary mayor.
Love your channel. It brings me lots of comfort and joy. I have a couple of recommendations for you. 1. 2002's Count of Monte Cristo - love, betrayal, swords, treasure, very good, very well made. 2. 2006's Inside Man - One of the best heist movies ever made. Thanks for all the fun.
The thing i like best about this movie is that the big-ass plane they use to drop the bomb took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base. I used to live there, and there are basically no planes there. That base is used for launching missiles and as a testing ground for civilian defense contractors. That’s the base Space-X was using, until they went to the floaty platform. If there are any big bombs there, they’re at the top of an ICBM. There’s no runway big enough for that big of a plane. So a part of me is all “Yay! We’re famous!” And another part is all, “But they got it all wrong.”
13:58 - 🎼 *_And remember kids the next time someone says “the government wouldn’t do that” Oh yes they would!_* 🎶 14:13 - *_DON'T give the government ideas now!_* 😱😅 *_Outbreak is a great movie that has been surprisingly underrated by many and ignored by even more. I think people in the 90s just weren't conscientious enough to see it as a real possibility and saw it more as science fiction with a dose of conspiracy theory (Ironic when you think that now the conspiracy theorists are on the opposite side of believing in the threat of such risks of viral outbreaks)_*
The town where they filmed "Cedar Creek" is Ferndale California. I live about 30 miles north of Ferndale, and know several people who were extras in this movie. It was QUITE a big "to do" locally when this was filmed! A friend of mine was the manager of the local movie theater at the time, and Dustin Hoffman dropped off and picked up his kids from a movie.... I showed up two minutes after they left, LOL.
WE'RE NOT MOVING!!!! This movie is fantastic but that's by far my favorite part. So intense. Also" "If you are in his way he cannot complete his bombing run". Thank you Billy (Morgan Freeman)! You always come through in every movie you've ever been in and that's why everyone loves you :)
Great reaction Jen! You're always a joy to watch no matter the genre of the film. The first time watching "Outbreak" at the theater, I remember some people were freaked out because of the movie theater scene, and after it was over they were walking out with their shirts covering their nose and mouth, LOL! And you're asking about a Dustin Hoffman movie to check out, may I suggest "Midnight Cowboy". It's a great movie about, well, you'll see what it's about. And I'm sure you'll love it. That being said, thank you Jen, and I'm always looking forward to your next movie reaction! 🎥🍿❤️
Facts about cute little monkeys, they are way stronger than they look, when I was a kid I was in a pet store that had one of those monkeys, I leaned in and and said "Hi lil' guy" 🙂 it reached out and grabbed a handful of my hair and pulled hard and wouldn't let go. 😲 Pet shop owner had to rescue me. 😄
Since you asked, Jen, Dustin Hoffman movies that I liked personally are, Sphere, Rainman, Hook, Wag the Dog, All the President's Men, and Tootsie. I don't know what you may have seen, but those six really, and I mean really, display his range. All of his roles in those films are completely different from one another. I never really thought about it until now, but I really like Dustin Hoffman. Have a wonderful day, all.
The afflicted town was filmed up on the north coast of California, the town of Ferndale. I remember them filming there while going to college. They also filmed the Jim Carrey movie “The Majestic” there too.
The original Andromeda Strain is a good one. But the best and most accurate in the past few years is "The Hot Zone" which was a mini series based on the book of the same name. It details the discovery of Ebola which almost got loose in the DC metro area. USAMRID was called in. It was scary and never really made the news.
When this movie came out I was stationed at Ft Detrick. When they showed 'USAMRIID Ft Detrick, MD' at the beginning of the movie I started laughing because it looked nothing at all like Ft Detrick. USAMRIID is a very small building off to the side of the main gate - definitely not a 6 story concrete pyramid. There were no MPs at the gate, just civilian guards. It was a very unassuming military installation.
@@technofilejr3401 I think since 911 it has MPs and a better gate maybe. I'm not sure. It wasn't particularly secure at the time. Once I was riding my bicycle and I was outside the post fence and I got a flat. Instead of walking/pushing my bike to the next gate, I threw the bike over the fence and then climbed the fence. It was a shorter trip to the barracks that way.
Outbreak is an action movie with a disease premise, Contagion is a social commentary movie with a disease premise. I like this more (mostly because I can't see it happening, whereas Contagion was depressingly accurate).
@@adamkormendi5904 I’d say the comparison is more like ‘Greenland’ to ‘Armageddon’ or ‘Deep Impact’. Small budget vs summer blockbuster. Did ‘Contagion’ play in theaters? (I bought it through Apple.)
Hoffman was fantastic as the sleazy untrustworthy reluctant hero in HERO (1992)- a sweet, funny tribute to old Frank Capra & Preston Sturgis movies of the 30s + 40s. With Geena Davis. You might find it for free here on TH-cam
Oh, I forgot Jen asked for Dustin Hoffman movie recommendations. I loved him in Runaway Jury, Dick Tracy, Tootsie, and of course Rain Man. He's done so many movies! :)
Strange thing, something like this almost happened in the US.One of the scientists was studying Ebola in a lab the 90s...Well,he got infected. They isolated him and, miraculously,he survived, and they called his strain Ebola Preston because the lab was located in Preston, Virginia.
When I started at my current job in 2012, we had those fancy hand scanners shown at the beginning of this movie. They were all taken out and replaced a few years ago. I have one of them sitting in my garage as a memento (of the job and this movie).
All the stuff in this movie about needle pricks and whatnot reminded me of something. My dad worked for the Indian Health Service, a part of the Public Health Service, and he was sent down to New Mexico, I think, when there was a hantavirus outbreak in the early 90s. He was helping to do work related to the IHS response. I don't remember the details exactly, but he accidentally punctured his fingernail with a syringe at some point. It must not have been too dangerous because he wasn't put under medical observation or anything. Well, he didn't die until 3 decades later, so it probably wasn't serious. :) Also, another suggestion to watch Andromeda Strain.
@20:04 one of my favorite performances of the movie is J.T. Walsh as the President's Chief of Staff (uncredited). He is usually a bad guy or super creepy, but he nailed that short scene.
32:20 so I saw this at my neighbors house with about 15 people. My mom who saw this film was at the back of the room talking away with the neighbor. When the bomb dropped and we all were nervous, she turned and said “oh yeah no worries the bomb misses”. We were shocked. Poor lady didn’t realize for a minute what she said loudly.
This was filmed near where I lived at the time, Humboldt County, California. My mom had to find the hotels for the Crew, and my dad's boss and his family get blown up in the pick-up truck.
This movie was intense, it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The cast was stacked and rewatching it hits different knowing what happened back in 2020, also I recommend Contagion it’s a great film.
About disaster movies I recommend you: Antarctica (1983), based on a true story about a Japanese base in Antarctica, that because of a big storm coming, the 10 members of the base must abandon it in 2 plane flights, there is no more possibility to take anything else and unfortunately they must leave 15 sled dogs they had in the base abandoned to their fate, they don't even have food, domestic dogs that were brought from Japan, they are not wild dogs, that can fend for themselves, and it is about the survival struggle of these dogs, the movie is hard because of the moments that the dogs must go through, but it is also moving, with music by Vangelis, which is breathtakingly beautiful.
28:33 maybe someone has told you already, but that is an E3-Sentry AWACS (pronounced A Wacks) (Airborne Warning and Control System) is a long-range airborne system mainly to detect enemy aircraft and missiles and directing attacks to friendly aircraft on the those targets. In production from 1977-92, it is still in service and currently, there is the E7 Wedgetail.
Some other great Dustin Hoffman roles are Marathon Man, Little Big Man, Rain Man, The Graduate, Papillon (supporting role), All the President's Men, I have always really liked Dustin Hoffman as an actor as well. Would love to see you check out some more of his movies.
Hoffmann's voice acting in the Kung Fu Panda movies is brilliant. Also check out Kramer vs Kramer, The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy.....just to mention his most standout roles.
The plane with the dish on top is an E-3 Sentry early warning aircraft, used for long-range airborne detection of enemy aircraft and missiles, as well as air traffic control in warzones.
I watched ‘Contagion’ in theaters when it came out, and immediately after it was over, almost everyone ran into the bathrooms to wash their hands. I found it very entertaining to see. You should definitely watch it, though, and ‘The Andromeda Strain’.
Great reaction to a movie that I found, on a "under the radar" movie list. I don't remember any significant, well deserved praise of this movie in 1995. I don't even remember what year I eventually watched it 20??, but I remembered every bit of it Well done
Definitely an underrated film, and I'm happy to see your reaction. When I was a kid, this film also led me to reading The Hot Zone, which chronicles the discoveries of the Marburg and Ebola viruses, and some of their actual outbreaks, including ones around the time the movie was being developed. Worth a read.
Great movie and choice. I don’t know why it doesn’t get reacted to more often. You should watch Contagion now. Similar type movie with a big cast. A couple of Dustin movies that are good are Midnight Cowboy, The Marathon Man and Tootsie.
The first government building they showed in the movie, that one long walking scene where they were going through each level… That was fort Detrick. That was two blocks from my college. And I went to college there in 1995. 😬🤷🏻♀️😅💙💙💙

The small town used as ‘Cedar Creek’ is actually Ferndale, California. It’s known for beautiful Victorian homes & for being the childhood hometown of Guy Fieri, where he was recently named honorary mayor.
"Rain Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise is excellent.
The speech by J.T Walsh who played the white house chief of staff was powerful stuff
I love J.T. Walsh acting in this movie. R.I.P.
My favorite disaster movie. Great script, brilliant cast,...I'm just glued to the screen. Never get tired of watching this.😊
Same here. Don't know how often I've already watched this movie. Definitely one of the best disaster movies 😄
Wow! So many A-Listers in one movie! I saw this when I was a lot younger and did not understand how many great actors were in it!
Sphere and Runaway Jury are a couple of really good films with Hoffman in them
Sphere is one of my favorites
The thing i like best about this movie is that the big-ass plane they use to drop the bomb took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base. I used to live there, and there are basically no planes there. That base is used for launching missiles and as a testing ground for civilian defense contractors. That’s the base Space-X was using, until they went to the floaty platform.
If there are any big bombs there, they’re at the top of an ICBM. There’s no runway big enough for that big of a plane.
So a part of me is all “Yay! We’re famous!” And another part is all, “But they got it all wrong.”
13:58 - 🎼 *_And remember kids the next time someone says “the government wouldn’t do that” Oh yes they would!_* 🎶
14:13 - *_DON'T give the government ideas now!_* 😱😅
*_Outbreak is a great movie that has been surprisingly underrated by many and ignored by even more. I think people in the 90s just weren't conscientious enough to see it as a real possibility and saw it more as science fiction with a dose of conspiracy theory (Ironic when you think that now the conspiracy theorists are on the opposite side of believing in the threat of such risks of viral outbreaks)_*
Jen, i'm so glad that you're doing a reaction to Outbreak. This was such a good story
I was living in Eureka at the time (Worthington Elementary). My dad's boss gets blown up in the truck.
WE'RE NOT MOVING!!!!
This movie is fantastic but that's by far my favorite part. So intense. Also"
"If you are in his way he cannot complete his bombing run".
Pet shop owner had to rescue me. 😄
"What an idiot!" Yeah, that was exactly what I thought when I saw the movie too!
“And he’s obviously sick. Don’t eat his cookie.” Never heard that one before.
The afflicted town was filmed up on the north coast of California, the town of Ferndale. I remember them filming there while going to college. They also filmed the Jim Carrey movie “The Majestic” there too.
28:36 Hi Jen. The thing on top of the plane is an advanced radar dome. The plane is a Boeing E-3 Sentry. Great reaction!
The original Andromeda Strain is a good one. But the best and most accurate in the past few years is "The Hot Zone" which was a mini series based on the book of the same name. It details the discovery of Ebola which almost got loose in the DC metro area. USAMRID was called in. It was scary and never really made the news.
Another more realistic but similar movie is “Contagion”. Was surreal watching it during the Covid lockdowns.
I don't know if that should scare me or assure me. Perhaps not calling a lot of attention to the germ lab is a good thing.
I think Contagion is a more realistic (and underrated) pandemic movie...but this one was first. I would check out Contagion next though.
Outbreak is an action movie with a disease premise, Contagion is a social commentary movie with a disease premise. I like this more (mostly because I can't see it happening, whereas Contagion was depressingly accurate).
Came here to say this 😹
Basically comparing Contagion to Outbreak is like comparing Deep Impact to Armageddon.
@@adamkormendi5904 I’d say the comparison is more like ‘Greenland’ to ‘Armageddon’ or ‘Deep Impact’. Small budget vs summer blockbuster. Did ‘Contagion’ play in theaters? (I bought it through Apple.)
@@adamkormendi5904 Nice! Great comparison - same topic, different approaches.
UNOFFICIAL WISDOM NUGGET: At 9:30, "Don't share cookies!"
WELL...THAT'S NO FUN!
@@e.d.2096 True, true, though in this case, it was partially eaten by a guy with a fatal infectious disease!
@@kevinlewallen4778 OH...actual cookies. I got it now.
Dustin Hoffman also has prominent roles in Rain Man (1988), Hook (1991), and Wag the Dog (1997).
Hoffman was fantastic as the sleazy untrustworthy reluctant hero in HERO (1992)- a sweet, funny tribute to old Frank Capra & Preston Sturgis movies of the 30s + 40s. With Geena Davis. You might find it for free here on TH-cam
Rain Man is STRONGLY recommended!!!
Don't forget "Marathon Man."
This is one of the best disaster movies made. Plus a stellar cast.
Also, another suggestion to watch Andromeda Strain.
Sphere - sci fi featuring dustin hoffman, sam l jackson, sharon stone.
YES! One of my favorites
The theater that the outbreak takes place in, I saw a stage performance of The Wind And The Willows there.
Hey, Dylan, hope the recovery is going well.
Wasn't this awesome Jen, so much action, great cast, Hoffman knocked it out of the park, always loved this movie 🍿🍿 thank you 🎉🎉🎉
Jen you so funny. As for Dustin Hoffman, I like him in "Meet the Fockers" and ofc "Rainman"
Classic Hoffman includes Kramer vs Kramer, The Graduate and All the President's Men
Rain Man.
I used this movie back in the 90,s when it was on Laserdisc to promote my THX sound system in my home 😂
That thing on top of the plane is basically a Radar
Loved this movie. Stacked cast. Big stakes.
Some other great Dustin Hoffman roles are Marathon Man, Little Big Man, Rain Man, The Graduate, Papillon (supporting role), All the President's Men, I have always really liked Dustin Hoffman as an actor as well. Would love to see you check out some more of his movies.
Always loved this film. Also liked the irony of watching it during lockdown in 2020 & 2021
Hoffmann's voice acting in the Kung Fu Panda movies is brilliant.
I don't even remember what year I eventually watched it 20??, but I remembered every bit of it
Well done
Marathon Man is a great Hoffman movie. And The Graduate, if you haven’t seen that one already.
Is it safe?
Definitely an underrated film, and I'm happy to see your reaction.
When I was a kid, this film also led me to reading The Hot Zone, which chronicles the discoveries of the Marburg and Ebola viruses, and some of their actual outbreaks, including ones around the time the movie was being developed. Worth a read.
"Maybe he can give her an 1101 something.... Science!" LMAO
Great movie and choice. I don’t know why it doesn’t get reacted to more often. You should watch Contagion now. Similar type movie with a big cast. A couple of Dustin movies that are good are Midnight Cowboy, The Marathon Man and Tootsie.
Yes, Contagion. Many people reference that film when covid came out. Andromeda Strain is also very good.
The first government building they showed in the movie, that one long walking scene where they were going through each level… That was fort Detrick. That was two blocks from my college. And I went to college there in 1995. 😬🤷🏻♀️😅💙💙💙
I first saw this in the theater. After that scene w/ ppl getting sick in the theater, every time someone in the audience would cough, it made me very nervous 😂😂😂
J.T. Walsh is such a one-scene wonder in this movie. We lost such a fantastic actor in him!
He was amazing in breakdown
Jen, 2 wonderful Dustin Hoffman hidden gems are 'Hero' and 'I ❤ Huckabees'
I think you would love both
This is one of my favorites. Thanks for reacting to this one. Yes , i would recommend doing Contagion.
Really loving the channel lately 😁 Idk if there's been any changes but keep it up, Jen!
A "Good Afternoon" to Jen👋🤓and a "Happy Birthday" to Me! 🥳🤞I'm so Glad that You-All can finally experience this Thrilling Reaction; Jen absolutely Loved this one, and I knew that She would!👍
Jen some Dustin Hoffman 🎬 worth watching are Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Tootsie, Rain Man co-starring Tom Cruise, Marathon Man, Kramer vs Kramer co-starring Meryl Sreep, All the President's Men co-starring Robert Redford another great leading man worth watching, Straw Dogs, Hook with Robin Williams, Papillon with Steve McQueen & Runaway Jury among others.
Hi Jen. Good job with this one. Interesting how close it hits to home today. You can see Dustin Hoffman in HERO, and of course Rain Man, Finding Neverland, Dick Tracy..See you soon! 😉
More Hoffman: All The President's Men, The Graduate, Marathon Man, Tootsie, Little Big Man, Wag The Dog.
Great reaction! Solid 90s thriller. Fab thumbnail! 💜
Always feel awesome when she gets to a movie you recommended in the past.
"Maybe they would disable all of the cell phone towers in the area so no one could livestream it"
Yes, but satellite phones are starting to become more common now.
This and Andromeda strain are my two favorites
