Oh the original Andromeda Strain for sure!
If you're looking for Dustin Hoffman movies, Rain Man is a must. He got an Oscar for it, and Tom Cruise (also in the movie) is amazing as well.
I would Argue that this isn't all that Disaster-y, but that's just My Opinion.😇"The Core" / "Deepwater Horizon" and "Vertical Limit" were ALL on Your recent Members' Poll, and I'd really Love for You to see those!!!🙏
Disaster movies I'd have to say world war z , Dante's peak , the impossible , rampage , the host and twister as for Dustin Hoffman I can't recommend sleepers enough that's why I used one of my picks to add it to the request list ages back 👌 and he's great in meet the fockers but ofc you need to watch meet the parents first which is hilarious 🙂
@@glenngalloway6191 I mentioned "Rain Man" during the Premiere: Jen said She has a Patreon-Exclusive Reaction to it.👌
“Everyone in this movie is an idiot”..that should be on the cover from now on 😂
Fun Fact: The Monkey used in this movie also played Marcel in Friends.
She was also in a commercial for Monkeyshine Beer...small world.
Damn. “Marcel” had quite a career.
Sadly capuchin monkeys are not found in Africa. They are a new world monkey.
Cool! Everybody deserves a mention.
and Night in the Museum.
4 Oscar winners: Hoffman, Freeman, Spacey, Gooding, and then you still have Donald Sutherland, Rene Russo, Patrick Dempsey, and Dale Dye…wow!
And J.T. Walsh!
@@d.j.8059a late, great as well...
And the monkey
You're right to use the term "method" to describe Hofman. He's a "method" actor which focuses on personal immersion into the state of mind of the characters. One of the greatest acting anecdotes I've ever heard came from the set of The Marathon Man, in which he is portraying a character who has been on the run for several days, and is exhausted, so he deliberately stayed awake, and when he showed up on set in his obviously distraught physical and emotional state, the classically trained Laurence Olivier asked him why, and after hearing it explained, Olivier said "Why don't you try acting dear boy; it's so much easier."
The original “Andromeda Strain” -probably one of the most realistic science fiction films. A bit more thoughtful in its pacing it might not play well in todays rapid edit culture.
“The Omega Man” -with Charlton Heston (remade as I am Legend) but enough significant differences and carries the theme of a biological outbreak that causes society to collapse. Bonus points filled with 70’s fashion and cliches and music.
“28 days later” -not a zombie movie but a virus movie.
“Doomsday”- “MadMax” meets “Outbreak” meets “28 days later “ meets “Escape From New York “
“The Plague Dogs”- animated film that follows animals that were experimented on and their horrible experiences. Tough themes and imagery but I liked it.
So there you have a list of virus themed monsters movies across a wide spectrum of styles and genres.
I'm going to second Andromeda Strain. The original from 1971, not the 2008 remake. It's much closer to the novel. The new one is prettier and faster but the old one closer to the novel and the slower pacing until the end helps the stress of the situation creep in better.
Also, I am Legend (2007) with Will Smith wasn't actually a remake of Omega Man (1971) with Charlton Heston just like Omega Man wasn't a remake of The Last Man on Earth (1964) with Vincent Price. They are all different adaptation of the book, "I am Legend" (1954) by Richard Matheson.
What about contagion
Doomsday for the win. I love how the tone of the film changes 3 times.
Original Andromeda Strain was Great. I remember first seeing at at around age 12 in the 70's on the late late show on Sat Night. Scared the hack out of me.
Another voice for the original Andromeda Strain. Left a lasting impression on me.
Jen - "Everyone in this movie's an idiot!"
Me - 🤣 🤣 👍
It was exactly what I thought when I saw the movie.
Just like real life.
"Contagion" is, imho, even better. Where this one is still very hollywood-y in its narrative, "Contagion" is more rooted in realism. With the hindsight of what ended up happening, it´s pretty eerie how much that movie accurately predicted. 😮
Contagion vs Outbreak is similar to the comparison of Deep Impact vs Armageddon.
Anybody else re-watched Outbreak when COVID started? For funsies? I did
way before covid. it happened before it will happen again. we are nothing
Twice :)
I definitely did because I noticed it randomly showed up on Netflix 😂
Oh, absolutely! On a double bill with Contagion. Shared them with others... Fun!
I chose to rewatch it on a Sunday night on March 15, right before the first week of lockdowns
Interesting fact: the virus they used in the movie is the original Ebola virus with all the symptoms it comes with. They just upgraded it.
Yes, to an airborne version. Airborne Ebola would be a freaking nightmare.
@@44excaliburas someone who studied virology at university, the idea of airborne Ebola gave me literal nightmares at times.
"You know about this. I know about this. Nobody Else."
I worked in an old second-run cinema when this was showing for a few nights. That cinema scene showing the coughed particles moving throughout the cinema... priceless! You just heard people squirming and chairs creaking. 😂😂😂
I hope you do Contagion soon; it was the #1 streamed movie all year during the 2020 pandemic.
When I was in the Army, I was 74D CBRN - Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Warfare Specialist. We mostly worried about enemies dropping "dirty" bombs, nerve agents (chemical), and anthrax (biological), but we trained for a wide variety of weaponized threats.

The thing on top of the plane is a radome. A radome is a housing or fairing for a radar. The plane is an AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) and uses its massive radar to spot threats, direct attacks, gather intelligence. AWACS often patrol near the borders of hostile territories because their radars and Intel equipment can "see" hundreds of miles across the border.
Yea, story I read , russ built a dozen, Ukr has shot down 2 or 3 of them.
The bomb in the opening scene is a real bomb, the BLU-82 ‘Daisy Cutter’, it’s called a “thermobaric” bomb, also known as a fuel-air bomb, it’s the predecessor to the GBU-43 ‘MOAB’, it spreads a fine mist of aerosolized flammable mist and then detonates the mist, completely consuming the oxygen in the area of effect, these are also called ‘vacuum bombs’ as they create a momentary vacuum immediately after the fireball explodes.
It's a cool movie, I really enjoy watching it. Contagion is way more scientifically accurate - a great movie too.
When Casey asks her to hold his hand, and she's already holding it, I don't know why, but that really hit me.
This came out a year or so after one of my favorite books (“Hot Zone, by Preston) - based on actual events. The truth is so much scarier, and at the time…we didn’t just dodge a bullet, we dodged an arsenal of nuclear weapons. We got lucky.
Hot Zone is a terrifying book
Thank you so much for reacting to this.
I had a busy day and all ready to relax, login and saw you posted this; over the moon excited.

As someone who works in a lab I don't know what's dumber-the lab tech not paying attention whilst centrifuging blood products, or a centrifuge manufacturer so stupid that they made a centrifuge that can be opened whilst still centrifuging.
Why not equally dumb?
I have seen centrifuges whose safety systems were really too easy to bypass. Amazingly, I can't bypass safety on my washing machine 😅
Remember, this movie was made before 1995, so approx. 30 years ago. Things have changed since then.
Agreed. Any centrifuge I worked with had a system that would lock it as long as it's spinning, so it could never be opened while operating.
But in the 90s, I was a child, maybe centrifuges were built different back then.
@@vornamenachname4298 I was doing my honours degree in Immunology and Virology in 1995 (I know, weird coincidence) and all the centrifuges in our labs had doors that couldn't be opened whilst the rotor was in motion.
This was the first movie I watched my senior year of college when I set up my first surround sound system (on VHS no less). Hearing the scene during the helicopter chase where they fire off rockets the sound of the rockets went right over our heads, I was instantly hooked on a huge surround sound system. 🤣
Retired Air Force here. That big plane was an AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System). A giant flying radar :)
Great reaction to this one, Jen.
Dustin Hoffman films which I recommend are:
"The Graduate",
"Little Big Man",
"Straw Dogs",
"All The President's Men",
"Marathon Man",
"Kramer Vs Kramer",
"Rain Man",
"Hook",
"Sleepers",
"Confidence".
There are others, Jen, but I think that these are some of the best.
Oh man, my late mom and I used to watch Marathon Man together. What a dramatic film!
There is an error in your comment. The movie "Hero" isn't listed.
Wag the Dog is really good too (he's not the lead)
Papillon (1973), THE prison movie before IMDB declared Shawshank Redemption #1 best movie.
@@SubZeroCommander oh man!! How could I forget! Good catch. Steve McQueen too.
Donald Sutherland’s line “Damn it Billy, are you dumb or something?!” Is the most I’ve ever heard his Canadian accent.
I wasn't surprised from the year 2019 to 2021. They wasn't showing this movie at all.😅
"What an idiot!" Yeah, that was exactly what I thought when I saw the movie too!
"Rain Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise is excellent.
13:58 - 🎼 *_And remember kids the next time someone says “the government wouldn’t do that” Oh yes they would!_* 🎶
14:13 - *_DON'T give the government ideas now!_* 😱😅
*_Outbreak is a great movie that has been surprisingly underrated by many and ignored by even more. I think people in the 90s just weren't conscientious enough to see it as a real possibility and saw it more as science fiction with a dose of conspiracy theory (Ironic when you think that now the conspiracy theorists are on the opposite side of believing in the threat of such risks of viral outbreaks)_*
When this movie came out I was stationed at Ft Detrick. When they showed 'USAMRIID Ft Detrick, MD' at the beginning of the movie I started laughing because it looked nothing at all like Ft Detrick. USAMRIID is a very small building off to the side of the main gate - definitely not a 6 story concrete pyramid. There were no MPs at the gate, just civilian guards. It was a very unassuming military installation.
Classic Hoffman includes Kramer vs Kramer, The Graduate and All the President's Men
Rain Man.
Jen, i'm so glad that you're doing a reaction to Outbreak. This was such a good story
About disaster movies I recommend you: Antarctica (1983), based on a true story about a Japanese base in Antarctica, that because of a big storm coming, the 10 members of the base must abandon it in 2 plane flights, there is no more possibility to take anything else and unfortunately they must leave 15 sled dogs they had in the base abandoned to their fate, they don't even have food, domestic dogs that were brought from Japan, they are not wild dogs, that can fend for themselves, and it is about the survival struggle of these dogs, the movie is hard because of the moments that the dogs must go through, but it is also moving, with music by Vangelis, which is breathtakingly beautiful.
The afflicted town was filmed up on the north coast of California, the town of Ferndale. I remember them filming there while going to college. They also filmed the Jim Carrey movie “The Majestic” there too.
Dustin Hoffman also has prominent roles in Rain Man (1988), Hook (1991), and Wag the Dog (1997).
Hoffman was fantastic as the sleazy untrustworthy reluctant hero in HERO (1992)- a sweet, funny tribute to old Frank Capra & Preston Sturgis movies of the 30s + 40s. With Geena Davis. You might find it for free here on TH-cam
Rain Man is STRONGLY recommended!!!
Don't forget "Marathon Man."
Oh, I forgot Jen asked for Dustin Hoffman movie recommendations. I loved him in Runaway Jury, Dick Tracy, Tootsie, and of course Rain Man. He's done so many movies! :)
Another more realistic but similar movie is “Contagion”. Was surreal watching it during the Covid lockdowns.
Wow! So many A-Listers in one movie! I saw this when I was a lot younger and did not understand how many great actors were in it!
Donald Sutherland's "Are you dumb or somethin'?" has been in my head ever since this movie came out. Such a funny delivery in such a high stakes, deadly serious situation.
“And he’s obviously sick. Don’t eat his cookie.” Never heard that one before.
The scary part is that there are a lot of these level 4 labs all over the world.
Ukraine has one.
@@taoist32 Used to be one in North Carolina, but it was supposedly "deactivated".
@@Lone-wolf-1982 These deactivated labs are still being used, just no public scrutiny allowed.
@@taoist32 exactly
The scary part isn't that the labs exist. The scary part is that they are needed because there are dozens of dangerous viruses that exist in nature that could jump species to humans at any time
That thing on top of the plane is basically a Radar
28:36 Hi Jen. The thing on top of the plane is an advanced radar dome. The plane is a Boeing E-3 Sentry. Great reaction!
This movie was intense, it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The cast was stacked and rewatching it hits different knowing what happened back in 2020, also I recommend Contagion it’s a great film.
Hey, Dylan, hope the recovery is going well.
Love your channel. It brings me lots of comfort and joy. I have a couple of recommendations for you. 1. 2002's Count of Monte Cristo - love, betrayal, swords, treasure, very good, very well made. 2. 2006's Inside Man - One of the best heist movies ever made. Thanks for all the fun.
My favorite disaster movie. Great script, brilliant cast,...I'm just glued to the screen. Never get tired of watching this.😊
Same here. Don't know how often I've already watched this movie. Definitely one of the best disaster movies 😄
Great movie and choice. I don’t know why it doesn’t get reacted to more often. You should watch Contagion now. Similar type movie with a big cast. A couple of Dustin movies that are good are Midnight Cowboy, The Marathon Man and Tootsie.
We watched this in the movies when it was release. I sneezed after the movie theater scene and the people in front slouched down LOL!
Marathon Man is a great Hoffman movie. And The Graduate, if you haven’t seen that one already.
Is it safe?
I think Contagion is a more realistic (and underrated) pandemic movie...but this one was first. I would check out Contagion next though.
Outbreak is an action movie with a disease premise, Contagion is a social commentary movie with a disease premise. I like this more (mostly because I can't see it happening, whereas Contagion was depressingly accurate).
Came here to say this 😹
Basically comparing Contagion to Outbreak is like comparing Deep Impact to Armageddon.
@@adamkormendi5904 I’d say the comparison is more like ‘Greenland’ to ‘Armageddon’ or ‘Deep Impact’. Small budget vs summer blockbuster. Did ‘Contagion’ play in theaters? (I bought it through Apple.)
@@adamkormendi5904 Nice! Great comparison - same topic, different approaches.
Since you asked, Jen, Dustin Hoffman movies that I liked personally are, Sphere, Rainman, Hook, Wag the Dog, All the President's Men, and Tootsie. I don't know what you may have seen, but those six really, and I mean really, display his range. All of his roles in those films are completely different from one another. I never really thought about it until now, but I really like Dustin Hoffman.
Have a wonderful day, all.
The theater that the outbreak takes place in, I saw a stage performance of The Wind And The Willows there.
The original Andromeda Strain is a good one. But the best and most accurate in the past few years is "The Hot Zone" which was a mini series based on the book of the same name. It details the discovery of Ebola which almost got loose in the DC metro area. USAMRID was called in. It was scary and never really made the news.
The speech by J.T Walsh who played the white house chief of staff was powerful stuff
The plane with the dish on top is an E-3 Sentry early warning aircraft, used for long-range airborne detection of enemy aircraft and missiles, as well as air traffic control in warzones.
Strange thing, something like this almost happened in the US.One of the scientists was studying Ebola in a lab the 90s...Well,he got infected. They isolated him and, miraculously,he survived, and they called his strain Ebola Preston because the lab was located in Preston, Virginia.
I love the mini storyline from when the mother goes in for testing til she ends up a picture on a desk in the white house.
This was filmed near where I lived at the time, Humboldt County, California. My mom had to find the hotels for the Crew, and my dad's boss and his family get blown up in the pick-up truck.
Jen you so funny. As for Dustin Hoffman, I like him in "Meet the Fockers" and ofc "Rainman"
When I started at my current job in 2012, we had those fancy hand scanners shown at the beginning of this movie. They were all taken out and replaced a few years ago. I have one of them sitting in my garage as a memento (of the job and this movie).
They showed us this movie in middle school science class when we were studying viruses. Though it is a movie with lots of Hollywood conveniences, it depicts a worst-case scenario of a viral outbreak that is frighteningly realistic at times. And needless to say, it's highly relevant in a post-pandemic world.
Though COVID is nowhere near as deadly as the fictional Motaba, the movie shows the severe danger of a contagious virus that rapidly mutates. It's a cautionary story. COVID might have a comparatively much lower mortality rate than Motaba, we should feel somewhat lucky that it does, as a Motaba-like virus is an extreme yet real possibility.
I used this movie back in the 90,s when it was on Laserdisc to promote my THX sound system in my home 😂
I love J.T. Walsh acting in this movie. R.I.P.
The town where they filmed "Cedar Creek" is Ferndale California. I live about 30 miles north of Ferndale, and know several people who were extras in this movie. It was QUITE a big "to do" locally when this was filmed! A friend of mine was the manager of the local movie theater at the time, and Dustin Hoffman dropped off and picked up his kids from a movie.... I showed up two minutes after they left, LOL.
I was living in Eureka at the time (Worthington Elementary). My dad's boss gets blown up in the truck.
"And The Band Played On", about the AIDS outreak. My instructor made my class watch it in nursing school.
Sphere and Runaway Jury are a couple of really good films with Hoffman in them
Sphere is one of my favorites
Donald Sutherland plays sinister so well.
The thing i like best about this movie is that the big-ass plane they use to drop the bomb took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base. I used to live there, and there are basically no planes there. That base is used for launching missiles and as a testing ground for civilian defense contractors. That’s the base Space-X was using, until they went to the floaty platform.
If there are any big bombs there, they’re at the top of an ICBM. There’s no runway big enough for that big of a plane.
So a part of me is all “Yay! We’re famous!” And another part is all, “But they got it all wrong.”
Always loved this film. Also liked the irony of watching it during lockdown in 2020 & 2021
Contagion is a lot slower, more grounded and there's no action in it. Here's a list of Dustin Hoffman movies to check out if you haven't yet:
Hook
Rain Man
Tootsie
Kramer vs Kramer
Meet The Fockers
Sphere
Wag the Dog
"Maybe he can give her an 1101 something.... Science!" LMAO
I watched ‘Contagion’ in theaters when it came out, and immediately after it was over, almost everyone ran into the bathrooms to wash their hands. I found it very entertaining to see.
You should definitely watch it, though, and ‘The Andromeda Strain’.
The small town used as ‘Cedar Creek’ is actually Ferndale, California. It’s known for beautiful Victorian homes & for being the childhood hometown of Guy Fieri, where he was recently named honorary mayor.
I first saw this in the theater. After that scene w/ ppl getting sick in the theater, every time someone in the audience would cough, it made me very nervous 😂😂😂
If youre a reader, check out the book,
"Hot Zone"
I think this movie was based on it, or at least its the same topic. Its been too long since i read it lol
I am a reader! I'm reading 3 Body Problem right now but I'll put that on my reading list
@jenmurrayxo if this topic really interests you read The Virus Hunter by CJ Peters. COL Peters was in charge of USAMRIID for years and considered one of the experts. The hot zone is ok but it written by journalists not virologists with first hand knowledge or access to these labs. You'll also be surprised to find out what virus we should fear the most.
"Maybe they would disable all of the cell phone towers in the area so no one could livestream it"
Yes, but satellite phones are starting to become more common now.
More Hoffman: All The President's Men, The Graduate, Marathon Man, Tootsie, Little Big Man, Wag The Dog.
This is just a fantastic film. With one of the best casts in the world performing at the top of their game and Wolfgang Peterson directing another great film (have you seen Das Boot yet? One of the greatest films of all time. Just don't watch it dubbed. Original German with subtitles.) ever since a kid I've been into viruses and diseases. This film has aged so well that it means more today than ever.
you really think a realistic response to a virus is nuking an american city?
There are lots of great Dustin Hoffman movies but I'd start with "The Graduate". "Tootsie" & "Rain Man" were two of his best. If you like thrillers try "Marathon Man". There's lots more too.
I saw this movie in a movie theater. But the roll of film was fed the wrong way. So the image was flipped from left to right. Unfortunately, the audio track runs down one side and not the other. So we saw the audio track running down the side of the screen, and some of the video was running through the area the sound system reads. So it sounded somewhat like the noise of a helicopter for the first 5 minutes until they finally stopped the film, flipped it around, and pulled it through.
Unfortunately, the timing was terrible. The main dialogue in that time involved people wearing biosuits that prevented us from even trying to read lips. The last thing we saw before they stopped the film was the aircraft approaching the village. We did NOT see anything drop from it. After a few minutes, they had it worked out and pulled it forward. The next thing we saw was the blast. We didn't even see the suspenseful and mysterious bomb drop. After that, the movie started to make sense, because we could hear it.
Wasn't this awesome Jen, so much action, great cast, Hoffman knocked it out of the park, always loved this movie 🍿🍿 thank you 🎉🎉🎉
Hoffmann's voice acting in the Kung Fu Panda movies is brilliant. Also check out Kramer vs Kramer, The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy.....just to mention his most standout roles.
Some other great Dustin Hoffman roles are Marathon Man, Little Big Man, Rain Man, The Graduate, Papillon (supporting role), All the President's Men, I have always really liked Dustin Hoffman as an actor as well. Would love to see you check out some more of his movies.
@20:04 one of my favorite performances of the movie is J.T. Walsh as the President's Chief of Staff (uncredited). He is usually a bad guy or super creepy, but he nailed that short scene.
This was filmed up in my neck of the (literal) woods, as were Jurassic Park and Return of the Jedi. The *real* Northern California. :)
I was living there during this. Those woods are fun. And the river in this is bliss to float down.
Sphere - sci fi featuring dustin hoffman, sam l jackson, sharon stone.
YES! One of my favorites
Really loving the channel lately 😁 Idk if there's been any changes but keep it up, Jen!
Great reaction Jen! You're always a joy to watch no matter the genre of the film. The first time watching "Outbreak" at the theater, I remember some people were freaked out because of the movie theater scene, and after it was over they were walking out with their shirts covering their nose and mouth, LOL! And you're asking about a Dustin Hoffman movie to check out, may I suggest "Midnight Cowboy". It's a great movie about, well, you'll see what it's about. And I'm sure you'll love it. That being said, thank you Jen, and I'm always looking forward to your next movie reaction! 🎥🍿❤️
34:30 Dustin Hoffman movie auggestion, 'Hook' (1991) ~ "My finger's on the triggaaarr" 😂
J.T. Walsh is such a one-scene wonder in this movie. We lost such a fantastic actor in him!
Definitely an underrated film, and I'm happy to see your reaction.
When I was a kid, this film also led me to reading The Hot Zone, which chronicles the discoveries of the Marburg and Ebola viruses, and some of their actual outbreaks, including ones around the time the movie was being developed. Worth a read.
Great reaction! Solid 90s thriller. Fab thumbnail! 💜
28:32 That's an AWACS if i remember correctly. The disk is a RADAR dish to monitor airspace.
Btw, Star Trek has a similar technology on the Nebula Class (idk how much of TNG you have already watched.,)
I love Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman in "Runaway Jury".
The first government building they showed in the movie, that one long walking scene where they were going through each level… That was fort Detrick. That was two blocks from my college. And I went to college there in 1995. 😬🤷🏻♀️😅💙💙💙
If you like Dustin Hoffman movies, then you MUST see 'Tootsie', 'Last Chance Harvey', 'Hero', and 'Stranger than Fiction'. Some of those are Not the most highly-rated, but they are all heart-warming.

"EVERYONE IN THIS MOVIE IS AN IDIOT!"
I've never laughed so much at this movie, which feels really good now that C***d is pretty much past us. I kept wanting to say, "JEN! THEY DON'T KNOW THEY'RE IN A MOVIE CALLED OUTBREAK!"
But that's kind of the scary thing, right? If you're one of the first people to get infected, you wouldn't think it's really anything that serious - or at least not something that could be spread to potentially millions. Until a pandemic becomes a pandemic, it's always, "this could never happen to me." And then when everyone knows someone who's been affected if not died, you're saying, "who was that fricking idiot who got sick and decided to get one a plane!?"
This film, as well as THE OMEGA MAN (1971), and CONTAGION (2011) were popular with many home-viewers during the Wu Han virus lockdowns. THE OMEGA MAN starred Chuck Heston and filmed in a vacated downtown San Francisco on the weekends - and I'll suggest that for Jen's reaction, as it's a blast back to early '70s culture.
WE'RE NOT MOVING!!!!
This movie is fantastic but that's by far my favorite part. So intense. Also"
"If you are in his way he cannot complete his bombing run".
Thank you Billy (Morgan Freeman)! You always come through in every movie you've ever been in and that's why everyone loves you :)

My top Dustin Hoffman favorites would be…Kramer vs Kramer, Tootsie and Hero!
