Why did this episode ever have to end!? GUYS Sumukhi, should do a monthly appearance! (request you to consider this :P )The love for "A suitable boy" is mutual, and I think I'm dying to re-read it this summer purely because of the discussions that ensued on this episode!
No mention of R.K. Narayan. I am kind of disappointed. But, there were many great reccos nonetheless. :) I am reading A family secret and other stories by Bijoya Sawian. It’s a collection of ten short stories set in Meghalaya which explores the beautiful place through lives of the women there. And Suki by Suniti Namjoshi. It’s a memoir as well as an elegy which is about the author’s cat. It’s about loving someone whose days are numbered and coping with their loss.

Re-watching all Books on Toast episodes during lock down
The most underrated Indian author is Siddharth chowdhury by far. His short story collection, the Patna manual of style is a must read. The fact that more people don't know about him keeps me awake at night.

Hi Anuya and Sharin! I just wanted to tell you how much I've come to love your podcast, especially since I moved to a different country and started living alone. Passive participation in your conversations with a mug of hot chocolate was super comforting through a very long and depressing Northern European winter. Said love is evidenced by the fact that this is my first TH-cam comment EVER (I am a mildly creepy but harmless internet ghost otherwise- lurking about and stalking rampantly but shunning exposure :P), but the credit goes to you two and your team for creating a safe space for social media shy book nerds like me. To not have an anxiety attack about BEING SEEN ON THE INTERNET is a big deal for me, so PLEASE TAKE LOVE AND APPRECIATION, thankyouverymuchpleaseokaysorrybye.
PS- This was a really fun episode :) a couple more works of Indian fiction that I have enjoyed immensely were Attia Hosain's Sunlight on a Broken Column (also beautifully evocative of partition-era Lucknow) and Mulk Raj Anand's The Village Trilogy.

I just finished reading 'a suitable boy'!!! I agree.. it was so not what I thought it would be.. was a brilliant snapshot of the time.. interweaving so many strata of Indian society.. the anglophiles, the freedom fighters, the lower social classes like the chamars, along with religious issues, moral issues.. all revolving around most prevalent middle class concern.. BETI KI SHAADI. So good.
Thank you for this BoTcast.. I enjoyed it so much.. I haven't delved into Indian literature all that much.. n have been thinking of exploring it more. This was the perfect introduction or rather kick-in-the-pichwada for me 🤗

I am just glad there's a new video not like I'm running short on books I should and want to read but you guys are awesome. Idk how many people relate to either of the hosts or the guests on the show but if they do in a way that their reading habits sorta match,one just instantly feels like they're a part of the conversation and it is fun.
Can you do a regional language translated works special? There is fine literature and I would like to see you people discuss the Regional language translations.
@Anuya - I'm mid-way in this book "My grandmother sends her regards and apologies". The story is from the POV of this 7 year old who loves reading fantasy fiction, esp. Harry Potter ; and goes around with a red felt-tip pen correcting grammar and adding punctuation. So you !! Check the book out . I can't promise if its great as I haven't finished it yet but it's surely engaging.
On a separate note, love the BOTcasts . You guys are the bibliophile friends I never had (which is kind of lame of me at 33 :P). Hugs !!
This is one of my favourite genres and Amitav Ghosh is my favourite author! Love Sharin’s observation about his stories always being from the POV of marginalised characters. - The name of the character in Sea Of Poppies was Deeti

Hey guys !loved the episode, but Bittora isn't like lucknow, it's a lot more like the rural villages in and around UP - Uttarakhand ( i used to live on a farm in Uttarakhand and this book encapsulated a lot of the politics there) , this representation is again really inspired by Anuja Chauhan's mother in law, Margaret Alva, who was posted for a long time in Dehradun.

Great Indian Novel is a funny version of Mahabharat :p Also Indian Independence. Also if you guys can still read middle-grade books, Aru Shah and the End of Time! A recently released one, it's Percy Jackson but with Hindu Mythology and female lead! Lots of fun! Palace of Illusions is LOVE, though, also Amitav Ghosh

Have you read Ashwin Sanghi's books? I really liked Chanakya's Chant and The Krishna Key. His style is reminiscent of Dan Brown's. Also Sita's Sister and Karna's Wife by Kavita Kane are great!

There is a book in odiya by prativa Ray called Yajnaseni (1984), she is winner of jnanpith award ...here aslo she writes the mahabharat from the point of view of draupadi, the book starts as a letter to krishna like..." Priya sakha" the English translated versions are also available

You gals are great. But I like how you are talking about the limitations of Indian fiction without considering Non-English books. Thats the beauty of Indian literature. I am sure with So many languages and writers, there should be loads of variety. So lets not say there is nothing without knowing them. Just a suggestion.
For ex: Jeyamohan is a popular Indian author who is writing an Epic. Its is version of Mahabharatha and I have heard people rave about it that the writing style is like awesome VR inside your head. I am sure this is going to be an Epic for the next generation. Something which will stand for a long time.
I had to read Such A Long Journey for i guess sy or tyba. And totally agree. Quite depressing. But I did enjoy his views for the particular political party in Bombay of the time 😉

after watching BoT I started reading Salman Rushdie.
Honestly, I don't get his writing. I feel there's a big obvious flaw in midnight children that no one acknowledged. which is that the main character is exchanged during birth but still he continues to talk about the rich grand father as he is of its own, even when biologically he is not of his own, still Rushdie gave reference to the nose of grandfather to the non biological grandson. I'm wondering how Sharin manages to love Rushdie.
Again I read that story in which emperor Akbar was there. it is so confusing why most of the characters are even there.
I don't hate his writing, but I found it so confusing.
